#1750636 Bring Harmony between publishers and scanlators

Posted by Saiko Scans on 26 May 2016 - 01:21 PM

The whole idea is really good, but nothing new I believe. I do remember MangaReborn doing something similar. The thing is, that we scanlators don't do this so we can make money from it. We do it, because we like it. I'll list some reasons why I scanlate Manga :

1.) Translate manga, so that it can reach many people. People often don't read manga, because they don't know the language. Hence, we remove that barrier.
2.) Giving back to community.
3.) When I see "Dropped Manga Series", it hurts me a lot, because it hurts when you can't read the story ahead because you don't understand the language.
4.) To learn and grasp more experience and knowledge in PhotoShop.
5.) To kill some time.
6.) To get e-penis, lel.

These are just some reasons why I scanlate. It's a hobby and I'd like to keep it that way.

Publishers and Scanlators getting together? erm NOPE, can't see that happening anytime soon.

If scanlation groups do join this "business plan" of yours, that means, they'll be doing a job, which obviously requires dedication to it and deadlines and what not. It's not rare to see that groups drop the projects all the time due to basic reasons like "no translator", "some important person lost the interest in series" etc. etc. If you get paid, you just can't drop the series mid way and you'd have to be consistent.

Even if you have the community on your side, I hardly believe that the publishers will accept this. Why? Legal reasons, duh!

So, the best would be, instead of asking the community first, talk to some publishers first and get their opinion and views on the matter. When you have something to surely back you up, then look for Scanlation groups that'll be interested.

Everyone above this post have already made valid points, and most of us (if not all) share the same POV more or less.

Then there's problem like Quality assurance. let's say I paid to read a chapter and the group did an awful job. The cleaning isn't good, grammatical errors, typo, etc. etc. I'd really hate to pay up and get "crap". Plus, if you say that, you will keep "QC" to check each and every chapter, how many people can you pay up for QC? 'cause there isn't just 1 release to check. Depending upon the group count, the series counts can be high or low. If it's low, that ain't a problem.

Plus, pay per chapter? that is going to be costly for people who read a lot of manga... 20 - 30 manga at the same time. Do you have any plan for that?

#1749931 What do you hate? And Why?

Posted by You on 21 May 2016 - 12:04 PM

I hate how it feels so easy to be able to sever ties with someone. Like once you make that decision to close that personal relationship, it's done. Really hard to come back from. No more emotions related to them. Just indifference acquataincy? Worse is being torn making the decision to not care anymore and let go, whether to take that step.. easier to keep the stagnant status quo or cut them loose. Yet, being unsure and not deciding, I hate that part too. .-.
Hate how I keep forgetting words, struggle to gather thoughts, put words into sentences, and drawing blanks when asked what I've been up to. How are people supposed to communicate with me apart from mindless chatter lol

#1749744 What do you love? And Why?

Posted by shelly on 20 May 2016 - 01:51 AM

I'm the opposite, I just really love the smell of old books.

Exactly this.

Reason? It's just good.

I actually dislike the smell of the new ones, they have too much of a chemically smell for me.

I love Arizona Iced Tea, the green tea flavor. Its really great on a hot day, it heals* me.    (*lifts my mood)

I like the taste, the design on the can, and the feel of holding it too.

#1749271 The Comment Section

Posted by OchaMeido❣ on 17 May 2016 - 12:37 AM

I'm not sure if this thread belongs in here or in Batoto Support category. Sorry if I'm wrong.

Anyway, here's what I want to ask: Why do people use the comment section more in order to discuss the series, instead of the forum? It's a peculiar one. If it's Youtube, it's understandable, because it doesn't have a forum. Here, though, I can't understand it. I mostly lurk, so it's not really a problem to me

lol, well it is just that unlike any other reader sites online, batoto's comment section seems to attract more words from members than others  does.you dont see mangareader,mangago,mangatown,kissmanga....etc have such massive paragraphs/comments about any series. even youtube doesnt have much such longer paragraphs as ours. and it auto-hides if it is too long.

you ask why? O.O i am not particular sure either. why batoto.....''~-~''

that is why we placed a comment section rules/guideline. even though many doesnt follow it,  if we see any comments that breaks

those rules, if we ''punish'' them, there is not much arguments/reasons why as they shouldn't be ''punish''.

we realize it is easier for members to just post xxxxx words as they like.  sooner or later, we will get to the bad potatoes breaking the rules...just a matter of time~

so i eager my lovely potatoes to edit their long/bad comments before i get to them ^w^

Second one means "middle"

#1746636 Where Can I Find...? [Recommendations]

Posted by Beefy on 01 May 2016 - 04:58 AM

I'm not 100% sure it belongs here since it's English-original rather than a translation , but I'll mention the Life of Riley series, about a man who is whisked away from somewhere in Vermont (northern Appalachian Mountains) and lands in what seems to be an alternate reality where humans did not rise to become the dominant species.  This is followed by violations of the Prime Directive, intrigue, quality world-building, sex, violence, actual plot, and quality speculative fiction (Regarding the sex and violence: if I were to give the content an age rating, I would subjectively say it's about R17).

If you like Riso no Himo Seikatsu, you might want to give this a try, it's kind of similar.  Although there's no magic and the technology disparity is smaller, the author does a great job getting into the socio-political and economic implications of the protagonist's situation. For example, he has knowledge from another world: on the plus side, this knowledge makes him insanely valuable. On the negative side, this knowledge makes him insanely valuable, and the other characters are well-written enough to anticipate what this might mean.  Like in Riso no Himo Seikatsu, the author also does a good crafting a protagonist that is  believably normal and flawed without turning into a caricature or standard archetype.

There's currently two books complete (we're talking full novels here) and the third is in still progress at 231,631 words (~634 pages of size 12 Times New Roman, according to Microsoft Word).  The author's posted free downloads at their website here (you're looking for the pkZIP archive links), and if you like them and would like to $upport the author (or just read it on your Kindle), you can purchase e-copies of books one and two on Amazon here

Book 1: Light on Shattered Water

Book 2: Storms over Open Fields

Book 3: Lies in Red Leaves (in progress, updates about once or twice per year)

#1748427 Dreams!

Posted by shelly on 11 May 2016 - 09:25 AM

I have been feeling unwell, so I've been sleeping a lot the past few days, a few hours at a time. So I've been dreaming a lot. I can't remember most of the dreams well enough to write them out (I forget them right after I wake up) but here are two from today that I remember a little better:

--> I had a dream that I reconciled/made-up with a family member I've been sortof fighting with for awhile.

I was walking around an empty area paved with asphalt in front of my house picking up dirty plates from all around, like there had been a party and I was cleaning up. Then that family member came by and started apologizing. But for some reason.... they apologized while singing   @_@  and doing costume changes mid-performance like a pro.  @__@

Though it really wasn't an apology, but more of a "Yeah we disagree, but hey, we're family, lets not fight anymore"

-->  I dreamt I dressed up like a teenager and snuck into my old highschool (which I figured would work because people used to mistake me for a teen a lot). It was P.E. exercises all day, everyone in the school, in one huge, gray, low-ceilinged auditorium, doing group exercises like jumping jacks, and that was the whole reason I went, because of the exercises. No one suspected I wasn't a student. The school day ended and I went home. Then I went to the school again a few days later, and did the exercises again. Then, when I decided to leave early, I realized the whole school was built like a prison, and I had to find some way out without people getting suspicious and checking whether I was really a student. I spent the rest of the dream and awhile after I woke up thinking of unneccesarily complicated escape methods.

I think the dream was caused by me thinking to myself that I should try catching up on the manga "Re:Life" again, and that I also needed to go to the gym. Also, probably... because I have become very unfit, but back in high school I did a sport, so maybe I was thinking I need to start doing something physical again.

My question: Can anyone else actually read things in their dreams?

I don't think I ever have. In my dreams if I look at an open book, I just get a feeling about what the book is about, but I don't actually read it.

It used to work that way for speaking too. I would just know what someone wanted to say without them actually making any sound. Either through a look they sent me, or them opening their mouths like they were going to sing, and suddenly I understood their message.

Even in my head, the message didn't come out in words ^^;;

Even when I concentrated on listening, I pretty much only heard the rustling of the speaking persons clothing at most.

But that has changed, now I can sometimes hear speech(or singing) in my dreams, which is pretty cool.

[For some reason, my nightmares always had sound though :/ ]

So I think it could change for reading too.

--TL;DR:  I can't, but I think that can change.

Edit:

I'm sorry to hear that. There's nothing worse than feeling bad and only being able to sleep in fits and starts.

Mind you, I always sleep that way. I'm up every couple hours, whether I want to be or not. I got into the habit back in college and never broke out of it.

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks a lot for the well wishes, it makes me happy, receiving that ^_^

The situation is actually a little different though. I sleep plenty at night, but during the day I get a weirdly deep tiredness, think "I'll just lay down for a few minutes" and sleep a few hours. So its 8 to 10 hrs at night, and around 6(?) hrs during the day.

Its different, but it still feels bad, so...

.... so I'm not returning the well-wishing! *holds it tight*

... I'm not greedy!

#1745867 Tell us your jokes! (even stupid ones!)

Posted by SliceAndDice on 26 April 2016 - 11:15 PM

Two men are lost in the desert, slowly dying of thirst and starvation. As they slowly crawl forward, desperately searching for any sign of food or water, they look into the distance and see a small tree, a single spot of green in the vast barren expanse. And they can see a plethora of what looks like juicy, delicious meat hanging from the branches. As the desert wind blows toward them, it carries the smell of freshly cooked pork to their nostrils. The one turns to the other, mouth salivating already, and says "Do you know what that is? That's got to be a bacon tree!" To which the other replies "Well what are we standing here for? Let's go!"

Newly rejuvenated by the prospect of food, the two begin to sprint for the tree as fast as their legs will carry them. The first man slowly, but surely begins to outstrip the other, but as he pulls away and gets to within 20 yards of the tree he is suddenly gunned down in a hail of bullets from somewhere nearby! The second man stops in his tracks, utterly aghast at what just happened! Seeing him still standing there, the first man cries out in desperation- "What are you doing? RUN! That's not a bacon tree, IT'S A HAM BUSH!"

(Most of my jokes are like this. Long winded, stretched to their most suspenseful, only to end in a sucker punchline).

What's the difference between a lawyer and a duck?

One can stick the bill up its arse.

A young lawyer had just opened his firm, and was waiting for someone to enter. He saw a man enter the firm, and so as the man walked in, the lawyer pretended to be on the phone, talking about successful cases and incredible praise. When the door closed, the lawyer said, "How can I help you?"

The man said, "I've come to connect your phone."

A Pope and a lawyer die, and both go to heaven. When they reach the Pearly Gates, St. Peter gave the lawyer a luxuriant mansion all for himself, and gave the Pope a poorly-conditioned apartment with a roommate. The Pope was displeased by this, and so he approached St. Peter and said, "Why did that lawyer get a mansion, and I didn't? I'm more religious than he is."

St. Peter replied, "Well, we've had over a hundred Popes, but that's the first lawyer."
