CARTER, Ashelyn
Ashe turned as the said owner of the house burst through what she assumed was his basement door, shotgun aimed right at Ashe’s rescuer, and he quickly assessed the situation. The boom of his gun a moment later reverberated through her body as the glass in his window shattered into thousands of glittering shards. A loud yelp on the other side of the front door confirmed the accuracy of the man’s shot, no doubt killing the mutilated animal. Good, at least the man knew how to handle a gun. That would definitely add to their chances of survival.
“You. Upstairs.” He commanded the woman standing next to Ashe. “And you…”
“Carter,” she replied simply as she released her hold on the woman and gave her a gentle nudge towards the stairs to get her focus off her phone.
“River,” he returned. “Got rifles downstairs. Grab one you’re comfortable with. My kid is down there and she’s armed. Announce yourself before you go down. I gotta get out there.” And with that River was gone.
“Great, leave me with a sobbing woman with her nose stuck in a cell phone and a kid while you go play. Thanks dude, it’s like we’re married already,” she muttered sarcastically under her breath as she shut and locked the door behind him then turned towards the stairs leading to the basement.

As she approached the stairs she could hear the sounds of a scuffle and growling and she swore her heart skipped several beats when it grew strangely quiet. She yanked the door open, completely forgetting to announce herself before descending the stairs towards the young girl looking up at her. Ashe looked beyond the child to the corpse of what looked to be… some kind of mutilated fox, or dog of some sort then back to the girl who was covered in blood and held the hilt of a broken knife in her hand. The empty cage gave way to the fact that the animal had obviously been their pet, but how had it become like the wolves Ashe had seen outside?
“Hey kid, I’m Ashe, are you alright?” She asked as she stepped further into the room, knowing for a fact that the little girl really wasn’t alright.
“Mommy,” the little girl said with a smile. “Why are you here? Daddy said you have to sleep.” What the…?
Ashe stayed silent for a moment as she knelt in front of the girl so that she could get a closer look at her and assess the damage. There were bite marks on her leg, but thankfully it didn’t look to be that deep, or at least she hoped it wasn’t. There was definitely something wrong though; she was too calm, an almost dreamy look on her wet face, and was obviously either delirious or hallucinating. Ashe pulled her leather jacket off and wrapped it around the girl’s small body, carefully pulling her arms through the long sleeves, and stood, pulling the child against her leg so that one ear was pressed against her hip while her hand covered the other. She fired a single bullet into the skull of the dead animal, just to make certain the thing was, in fact, dead considering the state that it was already in and tucked her handgun back into its holster.
She let go of the girl and stepped quickly towards the gun rack; looked around quickly for the key and smiled as she unlocked the weapons when she did find it. River did, in fact, have quite the slection of rifles, and she was very impressed with his collection. She found one that caught her eye; a Colt LE901-16S AR Carbine SBR, and she pulled it down from the rack to glance it over. Wasn't her sniper rifle, but it would work perfectly. She grabbed a can of ammo, making sure to pack it as much as she was able to, then slung the rifle over her shoulder. She would have to make sure to thank River for the nice rifle at some point, but for now she wanted to get his kid out of the basement. Ashe grabbed her hand and led her towards the stairs and back through the basement door, determined to get the kid away from the gruesome sight of the mutilated corpse.
“Alright kiddo, I’m gonna take you upstairs and we’ll take a look at that leg, what do you think?” She asked as she gently, though quickly, through the living toom. That moment, before she even took the first step, she heard the howl. Eerie and powerful it shook the entire house on its foundations and Ashe couldn’t help but wonder what the hell kind of creature could make that kind of a racket. Oh yeah, things were looking better and better.

She found the woman in one of the rooms and directed girl towards the bed. “Hey, watch her for a second, will you? She’s hurt and I need to find a med kit.”
Not giving the woman a chance to respond she rushed back out of the room and into the bathroom where she threw open cabinet doors until she found some medical supplies along with peroxide and other stuff. She grabbed a few towels as she left and returned to the bedroom, tossed the stuff onto the bed and slid the rifle carefully onto the floor, the ammo can next to it.. Before she set to work on the girl’s leg she chanced a look out the window to the street below and frowned. What the hell was going on? City full of sick people and some really messed up animals that looked like they had just popped out of one of those Resident Evil movies. Just peachy. She sighed heavily and turned back to the girl so that she could set about cleaning up the wound.
“It got you good, kiddo, but I think we can just pop a few band aids on it and you’ll be alright,” she said as she poured a liberal amount of peroxide on the puncture holes. “You’re pretty brave, you know that? Not many people do what you did.” She finally bandaged the wound and glanced up at the girl. “There you go, all set. How about you lay down for a little while, okay?”

Ashe stepped away from the bed, rifle in hand and stepped up to the window again and proceeded to load the weapon, then glanced back at the woman who was still trying to make herself look as small as possible. Not that big of a shocker, considering the way Ashe had just tossed her through the door not that longer ago. She knew she hadn't caused the woman any damage but there hadn't really been time to do anything else. So, a few ruffled pin feathers was pretty much the only real damage done to the woman, but it was better that than letting the wolf make a meal of her.
“Hey, sorry about before,” she said in a softer tone. “Thanks for helping me back there. I’m Major Ashelyn Carter but you can just call me Ashe. Can you tell me yours and her names so I don’t have to keep calling you ‘Hey’ and ‘Kid’?”
The woman stared at her for a moment, obviously trying to decide if she was going to answer or make a mad dash for the door so that she could go home. Self preservation won, apparently. “I’m Jessica Cho and her name is Ty,” she replied with an arrogant lift of her chin. Oh yeah, this woman was going to piss Ashe off to no end, there was no doubt about it.
