lol same, i've been trying to focus a bit more on painting (my painting game is extremely weak) and i've feel like i've been learning a lot more from painting (with or without guidelines).
I dont mind a basic sketch before painting but yea, it helps you understand that "lines" are imaginary. The only reason they exist is because of a contrast of colors. (or lack thereof). It can give you a more intimate understanding of the shapes/proportions of objects and color in general.
I think that's why we see a lot of bad anime drawings, It's like you skip understanding fundamentals and try to line draw. Which I think is something only accomplished artists with a good understanding of proportions/human faces can pull off well. Its like skipping several steps in learning how to draw.
