#1249064 "Staff Pick" genre: request of exclusion

Posted by Eien No on 16 May 2014 - 02:11 AM

Oh no, I didn't mean it that way, I just wanted to give you a heads-up that you weren't the only person questioning it is all.   :)

I've got to say, back when I first saw that tag being mentioned, yeah, I thought it would be a "locked" sort of thing that would just show on those individual titles and maybe also have a "featured" sort of spot on the site front page or something for all those particular titles.

Yeah, anybody being able to add it to any title kinda seems messed up.   :D

^original reason I suggested it

I wasn't aware it was going to be something everyone could use so for that reason alone it should be removed.

For all the other reasons, it's all a matter of opinion. I personally would have never minded going through a list of staff picked comics. It's not because I'm new around the block or a seasoned veteran but because most of my reading is based on recommendations. Regardless of the staff's taste as a whole, the tag doesn't hurt or degrade anyone and calling it "elitist" is quite nonsensical and overdramatic. If this became an issue where the only comics deemed worthy were the ones with a "Staf Pick" tag, then yes, it would be elitism there. Everyone subscribes to a certain trend when choosing what to read, whether it be genre, tags, ratings, followers or reviews. Some is random, but in the end we all have a certain criteria and whether it's careful research, a happy accident or a list of recommendations by a group of people who manage a comic reading website no one should be judged on their choosing methods.

However, if grumpy already decided to eliminate it then there's really no reason to debate its use. Either way is fine.

I'd be the serial killer killer.

Not like a vigilante or any of that self-righteous nonsense. I'd kill them for the thrill of hunting the hunter.

Yeah, the all-black choice for Blood's there now........and yeah, that stationary header  >_<

A shame, I'd use Blood if weren't for that, unfortunately the Blood and Deluxe themes both have some drawbacks to them in my opinion, I personally still use Sylo. I sure would prefer to actually read manga with the black background though........ I see the recommendations for add-ons/plugins (whatevers) are for Firefox, anyone know a way to get a black background for manga reading on Chrome?

Stylish is available on chrome too: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe?hl=en

Although if the steps are the same as in firefox, I'm not too certain. Couldn't hurt to give it a try though.

Not currently, no. But what you can do is use a plugin on your browser to change the way your browser interprets the website. It sort of adding a theme but it only works from your browser.

If you're on firefox, try stylish: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/

After you've installed the plugin, all you need to do is browse to the site with all the themes and search for one that works for you.

Here's one you might like: http://userstyles.org/styles/68671/batoto-soothing-dark

Give it a try.

I think I'll make my final statement on this as well.

This is an indirect reply to everyone who's having a rough time imagining the system. Just give it a try. It's not as bad as it seems.

Daktyl198, sorry to point it out to you, but lenght is more defined by spacing between each comment rather than the lenght of the comment itself. maybe it's because im not fan of twitter, but i dont feel the fascination of one liners and such for comments. If that was your example for what's wrong in  the comments how they are now, i must admit i totally fail to see the point.

Besides, i still fail to see the point of a "too long" comment section. It means that the comic is popular, and that people are investing their time in partecipating on the site. What is exactly wrong with it? Even if it requires three flicks, if the people want to go to the comment section it's because they want to read the comments themselves, right? Then you have the choice of reading the shorter ones, and scroll the longer ones.

It's not a character issue either. I think some here are failing to see the point.

The rules are simply trying to keep the comment section visually concise, informative and spoiler free for newcomers, and encourage(read that right, encourage NOT isolate) discussion in the discussion forum.

What Daktyl mentioned is exactly what I'm seeing. You're placing some sort of ludicrous value on the comments and demonizing the purpose of the spoiler tags.

The content of the posts is irrelevant. You could write the next best seller there and it still wouldn't matter. No one is trying to stop comments from being long. And the spoiler tags are certainly not demeaning or diminishing the value of a post and it's certainly not anyone's issue if you personally find that they do that. They're good for organizing walls of texts(as Seraph Mist has kindly illustrated throughout his/her posts) that someone may or may not want to read. I myself enjoy a post that's had some thought put into it, even if it's long.

It's not that what you posted is not a comment. That's actually a great example of a comment I'd like to run into if I looked at the comments section. The deal with the spoiler tags(and this concerns "large" but not necessarily spoiling posts) is more about aesthetics than anything else. Long comments and humongous images create a "pollution" and disorder if you will. If you consider, for example, Mangas that have 300+(I don't know the exact amount before this starts happening) chapters, you'll notice that a large number of them are "hidden". This is just to simplify the pages structure and eliminate the need to scroll through all of the chapters to get to the link to the first few.

That's all the staff is trying to get at by having long comments and large images in spoilers. It's not to create a bothersome rule, it's to add some order to the comment section.

Most of the people who "complain" about spoilers only do so silently. I don't complain personally because I avoid the comment section in its entirety nowadays. I've learned that they're riddled with spoilers(the ones with popular, ongoing mangas anyway). When I visit "less popular" ones, I will usually scroll down to read the comments because users will often say whether they liked the comic or not with vague details about its plot. I can usually get a good idea on whether I want to proceed with reading the comic or not.

I think that this was the original intention of the comments section and it's, honestly, more functional than for what it's being used for right now.

As for why the rules are being enforced now, I think that maybe it's getting out of hand?

I have no issue with any of those rules. I think it's great that mangas' forums might actually have some life breathed into them.

As for suggestions, I'm not sure if it's possible, but maybe if there's a way to "disable" commenting for the new people registering and have it so that the only way they can be enabled is by agreeing to follow the rules.

Something like this:

This way, everyone sees it at least once.

#1202362 Comment Section and Spoilers

Posted by Eien No on 13 April 2014 - 03:18 PM

The flaw with your explanation is that you say no one uses the discussion boards when we're clearly using one right now. I think that with a little enforcement, this can be applied to the comics board as well. There is no need to go against the system in place as Batoto has already been very accommodating.

If all else fails, I think that perhaps disabling the comment section would even be beneficial and users would go to the boards to discuss the latest chapter which is, no doubt, the better method for discussing.

Going through pages is a lot simpler as there is no need to scroll all the way down after each comment page read. The very format of these boards permits the ease of conversation.

It's all a matter of readjusting. Shouldn't be too difficult. This is for the sake of everyone.

#1201374 Comment Section and Spoilers

Posted by Eien No on 12 April 2014 - 09:38 PM

I would have to disagree with you there, friend. The comments section, at least the one on the comic's page is not for discussion, even if people have used it as so. It's a good place to tell newcomers about the Manga. General comments, if you will, about the Manga in its entirety.

The kind of discussion you're referring to should happen within a thread, like the one we're in right now. This is why most comics have a "latest chapter discussion" thread which is severely underused, tbh. I don't know what happened in the instance you're referring to but it is quite reasonable the way the moderators handled the situation. And I'm not kissing up here. I'm just noting that this had been discussed before and it makes perfect sense for the comments section to be void of major spoilers. It's kind of of like how on MAL there's a "review" section which is entirely separate from the forum dedicated to that particular way anime.

P.S. Posting on a phone is murder.
