Bonisagus magic is just pure magic stuff? Do they dabble in other school? Or do I just go pew pew? Or what?

A little bit. Essentially, they can transmute things on the fly if they need to, but it's better if they prepare something beforehand. Could you give me some examples as to the kind of things I might do for lab work and how they would affect my battlefield capabilities?

 

 

Lab work would be the mixing of chemicals or the development of tools to help make brews on the spot.

 

These brews could have w/e effects you want for them. Sometimes, you can throw a flask and create a wall once the liquid splashes on the earth. Maybe turn it into an explosive. Tools can be used to make these stuff on the spot in a fashion similar to FMA, although that's higher tier shit. As of now, you're probably limited to stocking up for now.

 

Of if you're particularly talented and skilled, you can make drinkable chemicals and become the god of magic or something.

They do not dabble in other schools. Rather, they focus on items of powers because that was the original magic that Bonisagus based his Hermetic theory on.

 

These items of powers are basically "spell books". You can load w/e magic you want into them, but they have a limit, and while you can "rewrite" these magics and replace them with new ones, you're still limited to w/e spells you have.

 

Which is sadly, two.

Ah! I figured. But no, I didn't have the webtoon in mind when I named him. Maruts are minor storm dieties in Indian mythos and one of the 27 also goes by the their moniker. Marut or Maruti is one of the 100 names of Hanuman the "Monkey Sage" and the lord of Strength.

 

Interestingly, in a minor anecdote concerning the 'Ramayana', only when Hanuman realises his true name does he unleash the power hidden in him. That name is 'Marut'

 

Finally, in Islam. Harut and Marut were two angels sent by god as adjudicators for human actions and actions of people influenced by Shaitan and Djinns. Marut among them was known to use a specific strength and vitality enhancing magic and with divine strength could strike down foes.

 

 

So you see, my choice was more rooted in his backstory than anything else. 

 

 

Okay... Just sayin, Hanuman is also a character of Kubera. She's one of the main char's grandma (though he's unaware), and a natsika leader of a sura clan.

Biography:
Draga was born at a very unfortunate time, a daughter to the king whose kingdom was falling apart.  The Rose Dynasty, named after their coat of arms, came to power in Yugoslavia during the WW2, when they overthrew the incompetent king who wanted to ally with Axis powers. From the start the new royal family was unpopular with the nobility, not only because of their illegitimacy but also because of their efforts to better the livelihood of the commoners at the expense of the noble’s privileges. The throne was only kept because of the powers and cunning of the first king, Josif, Draga’s grandfather.

However, after Josif’s death (many say at the hands of the assassins), Draga’s father Petar was unable to maintain the reigns of the kingdom, which was both the result of the conspiracies of various nobles and rich commoners as well as his own incompetence and preference for the use of force. Petar’s blundering ways have left him with no powerful allies and eventually the conspirators started an armed rebellion. The king attempted to maintain order in his kingdom by force of arms and by trying to pit nobles against each other, but the monarchy was slowly falling apart amidst the bloody wars.

It was in these turbulent times that Draga was born, but early in her life she felt no hardships. She was raised like the only daughter of the king was supposed to, in luxury, without ever needed anything. It is safe to say that she was also a bit spoiled. During these days Draga was taught a very white-washed history of her family. The bloody coup which led to Josif crowning was turned into a noble uprising against tyranny, for the good of the people. Her father’s brutal and paranoid reign was described as just and kind and the current war was shown as a result of corrupt nobility’s unwillingness to let go of their privileges in order to better the life of the common man.  

Things changed in later years, when Draga was forced to flee the country with her mother. The rebels were gaining victory after victory, the principalities of the kingdom were breaking off and declaring themselves independent monarchies and the monarchy’s capital, the White City, was besieged by the local lords attempting to overthrow the king. It was a dire state of affairs and Draga’s father decided to send his beloved and wife and daughter to the only remaining ally he had: the royal court of Moscow.

Things didn’t change much for Draga abroad, at least initially. Due to large savings of the family she could still live a luxurious life, as befitting for the royalty. But, as she entered her teens, her mother revealed to Draga a secret: she was a magician. The queen Aleksandra was member of a magician house of Quaesitor who fell in love with king (back then prince) Petar and married him. This revelation put many questions in Draga’s mind: Did father know? Why hasn’t mother helped father? And is she, Draga, a magician too?


Yes, king Petar did know, but he refused to let the queen use her powers to help him. A part of it was his male pride not allowing him to be saved by a woman, even if she was a mage, but the biggest reason was him not wanting to risk the life of his wife. Sure, she may help him, but she may as well get herself killed, and an overprotective husband and father he was, he couldn’t let that happen. He preferred to get them both somewhere safe than to put their lives in danger.

And, for the last question, yes, Draga was a mage. In fact, the queen told her everything because she decided it was time for her daughter to learn to tap into the power within her. Aleksandra taught Draga how to use magic, about the system of twelve Houses of Hermes, her own House, Quaesitor and its position in the magic society. Draga was an eager student, almost childish in her joy as she had spell incantations tattooed on her body.  To the pride of her mother, she was also very gifted in magic, quickly comprehending the ways to utilize it with maximum potential. Originally, Draga’s study of magic was simply out of delight to possess such unnatural talent, but things changed after the two received news about king Petar’s death by execution, several years into their exile.

The queen wanted to return. Possessed by rage and sorrow, she wanted to go back to their country and slaughter all those responsible for the shameful way her beloved has departed from this world. But Draga kept her cool and restrained her mother from doing something foolish while making plans in her head.  Even if they were mages, there was only so much that could be done by two people. But, what if she used these talents and tried to win back the old alliances, the ones her grandfather used to gain the throne and which her father foolishly lost? Not only that, a new world was open to her now. A different, magical world.

Could she find allies there?

Other:
Draga is very territorial. If you are part of her family or she considers you a friend, she’d go to great lengths to help you and protect you, even putting her own well being at risk. You receive similar treatment if you are welcomed as a guest in her home. However, she lacks empathy for anyone else. Sure, she will be able to act warm and friendly, but she would also mercilessly kill you if she believes you to be a treat or if you harm anyone she does care about. 

She really, really likes sweets and eats them several times a day. How she can maintain her figure is a mystery. Seriously, it’s almost like magic.

In her manor in Moscow she has large collection of plushy toys of all shapes and sizes and is always on the lookout for more. When she travels she will always carry at least one of the toys with her. She hides this hobby of hers from strangers, but is pretty open about it with her friends and family.
 

About Draga’s non magical abilities, although she wouldn’t win a world championship, Draga is quite good at fencing. Besides her mother tongue she fluently speaks Russian, German and English and can somewhat speak French. From the young age she was trained in proper etiquette so if she ever found herself in the presence of nobles or royals, she would know how to behave perfectly. She also knows names and coat of arms of all major European and American (as in, the continents, not just the states) noble and royal families.

 

Her tattoos are located on her arms, back, and her left leg. 

Last, but definitely not the least, she is a bewitching beauty, so wherever she goes she will be noticed, for better or worse.

 

 

What I originally planned didn't make much sense to me when I began writing bio so I changed some things. Hope that isn't a problem?

Biography:
An inner city kid of Brooklyn, New York, DeShaun was raised in a poor neighborhood where the law is in the streets and the thought was, "The only way out of the hood is to be an athlete or musician." The alternative being that you fall into the life of drug dealing and death. It's a thought transplanted into many kids heads from their birth. A sad reality that many people face. It is not rare to see kids make successful life's from this place in other ways but for DeShaun, his entire life was consumed by that thought.

You see, DeShaun always wanted to be a star baseball player. He was a New York Yankees fan and everything. He LOVED baseball. On top of that, he was great at it as well. If you judged by just his skills in Baseball, you could see that he was MLB material. However a couple of factors worked against him to derail his path to a professional baseball lifestyle.

Growing up, he was always the outcast. He chose to work on his craft rather than hanging out with kids his age. He hated his environment and wanted to leave so badly. Each day he could walk outside and and watch a drug deal go on in many different manners. He would see people he knew get arrested repeatedly. Even saw shady cops take part in some of the illegal activities that plagued the city. It was like living in an outlaw infested town where the only separation between going to jail and not is the amount of money in your pockets.

In school, he had good grades in school though he was not stellar by any means. Mostly, average to be honest. He did have a few friends there and they were all in a gang. His friends actively tried to get him to join but he was strong in resisting the urge. He was doing well and was on his way to his dream.

All was good but, then a tragic scene took place that took everything away. DeShaun was hanging with his friends playing basketball. Out of nowhere, a guy comes by and sprays the court hitting DeShaun and his friends. The two boys who were with him died and DeShaun was hit in the back. Luckily, the bullet missed all vital areas, leaving him with just pain. His life was the only thing he kept though.

After the incident, colleges and the pros all backed out of trying to recruit him. All of them assumed that DeShaun was apart or had strong association with gangs and felt he was bad for their business and programs. His dream was shattered by happenstance.

Depression filled him for a while, there was not much else for him to do. College was going to be very hard to start because he didn't have the money to pay and baseball was out of reach, let alone any other sport. He was musically inept as well. His mind was distraught he almost chose to become a dealer in drugs. Then, a woman came into his life and changed everything.

She was very strong and influential. She gave him hope, and job and a purpose. This woman had been watching him for a while and monitoring him. She saw something in DeShaun that was especially powerful but, never told him what it was. Her real purpose was never disclosed to him. He was gonna learn soon though, his life is much bigger than what he thought.

Other:
He works at a mixed martial arts gym and gets free training from Janice, the lady to hired him.

He enjoys working out.

He is diligent in learning anything he is introduced to.

Not a quiet person but doesn't disclose information to just anyone.

Keeps a picture of his two friends in his chain.

He is a bit flashy in his sense of style. But he always try's to look his best. Takes pride in being best dressed even if it's street wear.

A bit of a perfectionist but isn't OCD about it.

He does not sag his pants or talk like he lives in the ghetto. He speaks plainly and clearly. He may use some slang words here or there but he was taught to speak, act, and look intelligently, not like some hoodlum from the streets.

Yeah I know, whatever be her depiction in the webtoon, Hanuman is considered to be the god that bachelors and those seeking strength pray to. He also has a similar character design to the one in the webtoon but is far more stocky being a male.

 

If I read things right then in the webtoon she is the grandmother of Ran and Lutz Sairofe. That is pretty rad stuff.

Pretty much. You don't necessarily have to be nobility, but the quality of education is generally higher anyways, so I recommend going that path if you want to be aware.

 

So as long as we mention them being taught in magic or being taught about its existence/applications or whatever, we can be aware without actually being nobility? How detailed would it be needed to be aware when not nobility?

 

Also, for the Merinita house, you put their body is basically their magic, would they be born with markings or whatever their bodies or it's just something taught?

Well, if you want to say "oh, my character knows his/her magic!" then you might as well be unaware. It comes down to two points:

 

1. A magical education is incredibly expensive. A wandering mage without all the equipment couldn't possibly just teach you even the most basic things. Yes, he/she could push you forward into "thinking and seeing", which is the very foundation of magic in this universe (since perception precedes the actual creation of magic).

2. If you wanted to say that some noble decided to teach you, that would also be unlikely, because mages are assholes and care little for untouched "materials" that are not a part of the immediate family.

 

And with that house, it's kinda like your body is conditioning itself to become a vampire/werewolf/wraith. It's not really born or anything, but mages of the Merinita house are always born with physical/mental fortitude surpassing that of most humans and the average mage. It's this that allows them to be conditioned into one of the three "evolved" humans.

Yes, you can cast a fireball. You're limited to the Hermetic magic though, since that's what the science of Bonisagus revolves around. You wouldn't be able to do either transformation magic due to a lack of natural aspects unique to those Houses (Bonisagus couldn't shape shift or turn into a vampire, but he welcomed those two houses because he could learn from them). 

 

And for those specific examples, necromancy and absolute creation are not parts of the Hermetic theory, so no, you wouldn't be able to raise bodies from the grave or create swords out of nothing.

 

You could call out flames from hell though, but that's a while down the road. Everyone is basically a rookie, whether you like it or not, so the scale of your magic is going to reflect that.

I see, then unaware it is. Just was curious and wanted to get a clear picture. I was originally thinking of being a descendant or whatever of the founder via my characters mothers side but that'd be too much work.

Just that one side of the family would be the vampire turned ones (one I plan on taking), another werewolves and the other wraiths. Just a family split into 3.

So I've wanted to make a lawyer/demon summoner character to exploit contracts in something for a while now and this seemed like a good opportunity. Especially seeing as the particular house involved has a head office in my home country.

Biography: Yvette grew up in one of the richest neighborhoods in Cape Town, South Africa; Clifton. This was not to say that her family was necessarily rich, in fact it often seemed that her father, Christiaan van Rooyen struggled to keep afloat of the ocean of debt he was accruing. They had been well-off at one stage Yvette understood, before she was born her father had landed a top job at a newly established asset management firm in South Africa. Christiaan marrying Yvette's mother, Inge van Rooyen (nee Versfeld) whose father, Henrik Versfeld, owned the company had had a lot to do with the appointment. During this time Christiaan, while the lacking the necessary skills involved in managing funds other than feeling quite at ease spending other people's money, marketed himself as an entrepreneur.

 

The luck of the van Rooyen's took a turn when a full investigation and audit was conducted when the South African Revenue Service was tipped off to the less than savory business practices of the management firm. The auditors had marched in and torn the place apart, poring through the books until they had dug up enough dirt to fill the metaphoric financial grave of everyone in a management position upwards. This meant that Christiaan and Henrik were both left near destitute after reparations had been made to clients. While Henrik had become a pariah in the financial world with whom nobody wanted to work he at least had the credentials to take on an advisory role at a small private bank so long as he stayed well clear of any client's money, Christiaan on the other hand had nothing to fall back on.

 

He resorted to cajoling old friends he had made during the few golden years into investing into sure thing business ventures from which he took 'commissions' even if the deal never came to fruition. In other words he introduced hopeful idiots to each other then promptly turned around and demanded they pay him for the pleasure of meeting each other. That was the general problem with commission based jobs, it left so many avenues open for dishonesty and Christiaan knew his way down them all. The bigger the supposed payout of these deals, the larger his commission. This was how he supported our decadent lifestyle that he and my mother had grown accustomed to. That and a string of debt that never seemed to get completely payed off.

 

Yvette and her elder brother, Pieter, were put through one of the most expensive schools in the area with the money the Christiaan also seemed able to make magically appear when it was needed. It wasn't until her later high school years when she finally caught wise to the fact that her family was essentially penniless. Her father in the mean time had made connections with her and her brother's school friends' parents in order to continue his desperate ploys to keep their family afloat. The money however was just not there and shortly after Yvette graduated high school, obtaining a bursary to go study in Johannesburg, Inge left her father, satisfied that the children had at least gotten an education.

 

She didn't know why her father had insisted on living such a hopelessly lavish lifestyle despite their means. Everything had to be the best. Te cars, clothes...the food even, so often payed for by whichever poor sod her father had been buttering up for 'the deal of a lifetime'. It had something to do with appearances she had gathered not only did both her father and mother feel intense embarrassment about their situation, but her father would not have been able to swim in the waters he did if he did not keep up appearances. No-one would deal with someone living in a ramshackle apartment near the Cape Flats, but if one gave off the appearance of wealth it lent more credence to any story they happened to tell. 

 

Yvette had been angry at her father. For living so far above their means that they would be buried in debt, but she at least conceded that they had gotten a damn good education. She went on to study law, specializing as a contract lawyer as well as a minor in business law and joining a practice, Opperman & Associates before finally taking a partnership position at the tender age of 28 (she was still contesting changing it to Opperman & van Rooyen). Pieter unfortunately had been taken under her father's wing and had begun learning the family tradition of fleecing people out of their money and staying ahead of debt collectors. For her part she threw herself whole-heartedly into her work. Some might find contract law boring, but for her it was exhilarating knowing the kind of power a properly binding contract could enforce.

 

There was always a higher mountain to climb however and she had recently caught the eye of some specialized group in Johannesburg, as far as Yvette understood they were lawyers who only catered to a special list of clients and kept their activities were under wraps. If the research she had conducted was anything to go on however it pointed to this secretive cabal of lawyers being rolling in unseemly amounts of money. She hoped to hear from them soon.

 

Other:

• Although she judges her father harshly she is still a lawyer and not above engaging in unscrupulous acts of her own.
• Gets off on control. Likes to have her house in order with her as top dog.
• Forceful, sometimes abrasive personality although very able to play a role if it fits her purpose.
• Likes cute, ditzy assistants who are eager to please.
• Still keeps in contact with her family, despite her sentiment towards them. Even Oupa Henrik gets a call now and then.
• Speaks fluent English and Afrikaans while competent in Xhosa; also knows a few phrases of Zulu.
