Inspired by the White Wolf multiverse and the Seven Paths role-play
Prelude: Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall
By moonlight, I like to practice my craft, sometimes underneath the roof of my house, better yet, the roof of the world – that is, the diaphanous clouds that hover in the sky. At other times though, I value the dark corners of my laboratory, candle melting away on top of my desk. The shadows like to dance with the flicker of the fire burning on top of the candle, jumping between dusty tome to empty flasks, yet tonight – the shadows seemed to dance only within the mirror that rested against the wall.
Tonight, I wish the sun were up instead.
I stare at the face within the mirror; it stares back. I make a funny face towards that face; it makes the same face back. I snarl to the reflection; it snarls back.
I placed my fingers against the cool glass, and brought my face close to the mirror. With an almost inaudible breath, I whisper.
“This was not my fault.”
The face within the mirror simply smiled in response, and shook its head. I back away as the surface of the mirror began to bulge forward, and time and space began to break down, all laws rendered obsolete as the figure stepped out from behind the glass door.
The doppelganger fit the definition – a mirror image of me that I held no power over. He walked around me at a leisurely pace, his arms folded across his robe of dark colors. He continued shaking his head, smirking all the while. My courage began to falter, and I couldn’t say what I wanted to say.
“You want to tell me to disappear, that I have no place in this world.”
I could only look at the demon as it began to look over the body it produced for itself, a form that was all too similar to mine. Feeling the beads of sweat running down my face, I quickly grabbed a small towel and wiped my forehead, taking deep breaths. However, a chill ran through my spine, and I slowly turned my head, my eyes meeting the glacial gaze of the demon I have undoubtedly created.
“Ask of me what you wish, Bonisagus, but do not compel me.”
Yet, I had no questions to ask, just a realization, a gnawing sense of fear, and the convincing thought that my life will end in just a few seconds. Perhaps the demon could spare me if I could ask a question, just any question. But I realize, that as a mortal being, no matter how much I toil within my studies of the unknown and the fantastic, there is no hope of a man understanding the mind of a demon. Resignation began to fill my entire soul, and I could only shake my head. The demon had expected an important question, but unfortunately, I have not found that question.
“I see.”
The demon was surprisingly quiet, and his voice held disappointment. What was he disappointed about? If anything, I was the one to be disappointed – but time wouldn’t allow me to have such feelings. The end is soon, and as the demon form of Bonisagus the Sorcerer placed his hand against my forehead, it was like all my senses dulled. My vision went black, and I felt myself fall from my seat.
Is this death? The feeling of time dilating, with each moment of my collapse to the floor slowing down to the point where a second began to feel like an eternity. The demon Bonisagus spoke, his voice ringing out loud.
“You are the first, Bonisagus – the first magician to exist in this world. But believe me, there will be many like you, and with a population of magician comes a society, an institution of law, order, and reason in one hand, and evil, chaos, and insanity in the other. But I, Vainamoinen, shall bring this to the world in your place, and bring change to the world and all of-”
But I heard no more.
Mythic Earth
Spoiler
Following the inspiration of several different tabletops, I settled on expanding Ars Magica’s Mythic Europe setting. I think that having some alternate history that builds up the setting for this role-play is obviously going to be in order, but the best example for this Mythic Earth setting would be like that of a Sunrise anime.
You know, all modern and shit and yet have that whole “empire and kingdoms” model that is so outdated that not even having cool robot fights can modernize the concept.
That also means pretty much every country is run with a monarch. While democracy has a part in some of these governments, just note that we do have a King of America rather than a President of America, as an example.
Not too complicating, just the whole world suddenly started caring for royalty again. I blame Bonisagus for that.
What a Magical World!
Spoiler
To Whom It May Concern:
As you know, the year is 20XX.
Unknown to most historians, and sadly most of the world, magic is not a myth. Recorded accounts and whatever the hell they stuck in those history books of yours did a good job of disguising the impact of magic upon human history, but it doesn’t prove the whole “wizard and witches are myths” idea.
Now, that was not entirely the fault of historians, because they had been fed facts and sciences that would suggest that just about any living creature in the world held not a single ounce magical ability within their bodies. Such a thing is due to the great finder of our magical order, Bonisagus, who made it a point to keep magic and science separate.
Of course, you might be asking that if magic exists in this world, does that happen to extend to the paranormal and other such mysteries? Well, to excite a small percentage of you, magical creatures do exist in this world. All the ghost, monster, and fantastic tales you have heard are most definitely true, and you’re just going to have to accept that – especially when magician relations with such creature can be rather rocky at times.
But, that’s not the truly important part. All that is just history.
Now, in regards to why I am sending out this notice, well, I am in need of people who are interested in forming a covenant with me. Now, for those of you who did not grow up with a magical background, a covenant is something of a home for us wizards, a sanctuary where we can research and experiment in our labs, and have our little goblin and kobold buddies to bring us our meals in silver trays! I don’t believe in slavery personally, but people seem to think we regard such creatures as members of such a foul institution.
Nonsense. These magical buddies get paid a fine salary for their work.
Regardless, I acquired a nice, cozy place for us to return to from our journeys through the various mazes of modern science and crime, but I need companions. Not to say that I’m a lonely man, but to be honest, I am! I have seven assistants, so to speak, but only half of them speak English, and half of that English-speaking number isn’t even human!
Anyways, that is my situation, so I would really appreciate it if any mage, educated or not, in want of a covenant come by my place and possibly consider joining. We’re just a simple covenant experiencing the spring of life, and I certainly don’t want to force you to choose us over a more established autumn covenant or something like that, but I would most definitely appreciate at least being a candidate.
I mean, all of us are descendants of the different houses of the Order, so we’re basically family. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to cast magic.
And for the, um, mages out there who are unaware of their powers, I suppose I can send out people to go look for you and bring you here. You’re definitely safer in this house than out there in the world without a friend.
Yours truly,
Lord [Redacted].
P.S. Really? I’m not allowed to include my name in these fucking broadcasts?
The Houses of Hermes and Their Paths of Affinity
Spoiler
In the first gathering of magi, twelve sorcerers met with the incredibly powerful Bonisagus, and thus formed the Order of Hermes. Each house was named after one of the wizards, based on the part of Hermetic magic that they chose to focus and develop. In modern times, they are now known as the Houses of Hermes, twelve organizations that could be called siblings in their magic. The founders of the Order of Hermes were Bonisagus and his first pupil, Trianoma. Over the years, the Order had sustained itself, although some of the original houses no longer exist, and had been replaced with new ones. The branch of magic a magician excels in is indicative of which house they effectively belong, and the Order makes up pretty much all of the wizards’ politics.
House Bjornaer
Spoiler
Bjornaer was a witch that had the incredibly ability to shapeshift into animals. The dark-skinned woman was unlike most women who had appeared within the council; she was one of those “Indians” from the Americas, and many believed that Bjornaer was not even her real name. Yet, even if her foundation of magic was far from the classic Roman magicians, Bjornaer’s unorthodox approach appealed to Bonisagus, and he welcomed her as one of the original twelve. Much like their progenitor, members of this house like to focus in the magic of shapeshifting.
House Bonisagus
Spoiler
The original House of the Order of Hermes, the members of this proud and established organization seek to do what Bonisagus once did – further the study of magic by leaps and bounds. Although Bonisagus was not born in England, he decided the country to be his final resting place, and the house thereafter were determined to be headquartered in the depths of London. Bonisagus, during his lifetime, was a mage who liked to create items of power – the tree of magic he once drew for his Hermetic theory determined that these “items of power” should be a catalyst to drawing out natural magic; that is, energy that came from nature itself. In modern times, the members of House Bonisagus turned these items of power into something they could keep with themselves in the outside world (a ring, a cane, etc.). The most important thing is that the material used to make an item of power had to be in its purest form – plastic would not suffice.
House Criamon
Spoiler
Perhaps the strangest of the founders, Criamon was an expert in the senses: his magic involved tampering with the brain, creating suggestions, dreams and illusions that would help drive his own agenda further. It was well-known that Criamon was insane, due to his obsession over an entity which he called “The Idea of Sorrow” – a being that was the sum of all misfortune in the world. The wizard was solitary by nature, and while he thought the creation of the Order of Hermes was a positive step, he barely took part in the gatherings, instead choosing to hide out within the mountains of Nepal – the modern-day illusionists of his house still reside there.
House Ex Miscellanea
Spoiler
The last of the houses to be formed, Ex Miscellanea was not built under a single magic, but effectively taken over the position of the twelfth house, with the preceding house now defunct. Ex Miscellanea was formed when one of the students of Bonisagus, Pralix, went off to the lands of the Ireland to hunt down a demon by the name of Gagyson. Gagyson had formed an almost unbreakable defense within his fortress, and enslaved many of the locals. Pralix would build her own army with these locals, and in the rebellion, she managed to destroy the demon and shut down the demon’s plans. However, Pralix was also ambitious by nature, and with her newly-formed army of wizards, marched forward to England to demand Bonisagus in becoming a founder within the order. Her old teacher allowed her in the condition she simply take the position away from another founder, and Pralix did so, dispatching her target and taking his seat of power. In today’s world, the members of this House became focused on barrier magic, being able to create separate spaces from the actual world – in theory, the most complex of magic because the wizard must conjure up a completely new world. Pralix eventually settled on China in being the headquarter of the House, and numerous members of the House are also part of the Triad.
House Flambeau
Spoiler
Flambeau had been a young boy living in the Iberian Peninsula, during a time when the Christians were in battle against the Moors. Flambeau’s father had been something of a healer, and he often tended to the wounds of many of the Christian soldiers who ended up perishing in the war anyways. Naturally, Flambeau helped his father in aiding the soldiers, and eventually discovered a way to apply “heavenly medicine” to the soldiers. Flambeau had long believed his powers to be a gift from God, and even after convening with the “heathens” of the Order of Hermes, Flambeau continued to help the order and general population with his knowledge of herbal medicine and healing spells. His influence within the medical centers of Madrid is humongous, and it’s worth nothing that House Flambeau has numerous members who live comfortably, given they work as doctors.
House Jerbiton
Spoiler
Hailing from the old lineages of the Roman Empire, Jerbiton was essentially an Italian noble with an incredibly unique appreciation of the arts. He seemed to enjoy music, and to name a cliché in life, truly believed that the magic in life can only be found in music and composition. In a way, Jerbiton isn’t wrong, and the members of his House (mostly concentrated in Italy) all agree, living their lives as musicians capable of “refreshing the soul”. The magic this house specializes is obviously musical magic, which is what Criamon’s magic to the mind would’ve been had it applied to the body – enemies might feel exhausted upon listening to the music of Jerbiton, and allies might feel themselves become incredibly empowered.
House Mercere
Spoiler
Mercere’s story was an inspirational one. He was remembered as the founder most enthusiastic of the Order of Hermes, but in one of his many experiments, his gift for magic abilities simply vanished. No matter how much Bonisagus tried, Mercere was unable to recover his magical gifts. Yet, Mercere was not bitter about the experience, and returned to Paris, disappearing for about six months. Upon returning from his self-imposed exile, Mercere had developed, using his knowledge of magic, what was known as “true alchemy”. The ability to transmute items from just their base materials through laboratory procedures and other markings was incredibly ingenious, and Mercere overcame his now magic-less existence by combining science and magic. He is forever lauded as a genius second to Bonisagus, and members of his House within the lands of France continue their progenitor’s works in advancing alchemy.
House Merinita
Spoiler
Merinita was a quiet woman, as the stories say. Triamona had traveled far and wide, finding the legendary witch within the Germanic lands of Europe. It was said that Merinita simply went with Triamona without uttering a single word, communicating with only a nod for confirmation and a shake for denial. Merinita had magic similar to Bjornaer’s – it involved transforming, but Merinita was more fascinated with humanoid transformations, effectively advancing the human race. After the forming of the Order of Hermes, Merinita disappeared into the wilderness once more, and unable to decide which line of evolution to follow, her House divided into three factions: the vampires, the werewolves, and the wraiths. Spread throughout all of Germany, members of this House have magic that is always active – their body is the magic, and while they can change between one of the three forms they chose and their human form, they hold none of the legendary weaknesses of their monster counterparts; sunlight, silver, and the holy cross do not seem to bother these magi.
House Quaesitor
Spoiler
Hailing from the countries of Eastern Europe, members of this house come from a rather hated background – the founder had been known to be a paranoid man, and Quaesitor made it his goal to create complete order and law within the group. Vehemently opposing to the idea of the Order, Quaesitor eventually gave in with the condition that he could investigate and police the different Houses, making him incredibly unpopular with the other founders. Ultimately, Quaesitor was assassinated by a nameless wizard, and the House came into ruin. Unable to determine a new leader, members of the House became the “magical mercenaries” of the world – each member simply sold his or her services to another group, and just took care of themselves. That said, despite the current state of the House, they are still recognized as one of the twelve Houses of Hermes. Much like their founder before his unexpected murder, members of this House use their bodies as tomes and catalysts, inscribing runes and incantations as tattoos across their bodies, allowing them to invoke their spells by simply thinking about activating it. Often times, the tattoos had to be disguised, hidden away from sight, but in terms of magical diversity, it’s safe to say that members of this House has dabbled in all corners of Hermetic magic.
House Tremere
Spoiler
Tremere was remembered as the weakest of the founders, and he knew it. A rather violent man, Tremere lived with the belief that he must constantly prove himself to others, and therefore, decided to focus on strengthening himself with outside help. Much like the stories of Faust, he decided upon contracting otherworldy spirits to serve him, and indeed, he soon commanded a unit of spirits capable of doing his dirty work for him. As a result, Tremere also became one of the most feared of the founders, because his clever approach to magic allowed him to “cheat” the system in a very legitimate way. Of course, each contract had a catch, and Tremere didn’t live a very long life, and died a very brutal death. As such, if you wanted to at least live to fifty years old, it was accepted that you shouldn’t contract more than two spirits at a time. This was simple a base line, of course, but most modern practitioners of this magic follows it to the text. Tremere had originally been from Africa, and the house has headquarters in different cities such as Cairo and Johannesburg.
House Tytalus
Spoiler
The smallest of the Houses, and yet the most talented, their founder is regarded as actually having more magical ability than Bonisagus, but simply lacked the age and wisdom earned through experience to better cultivate his powers. Tytalus was not known for being a patient man, so rather than deciding what his strengths were, he decided on the most simple and general magic to perfect, and settled on the manipulation of the elements. Invoking commands to the wind, the fire, the water, and the earth, Tytalus was actually more powerful than Bonisagus, although not anywhere near as understanding when it came down to the study of magic. Upon returning to Kiev, Tytalus became regarded as a god to the sorcerer population within there, and this cult became the first generation of his House. Much like Tytalus, modern members of this family are capable of manipulating the elements, although most of them specialize in one element, as Tytalus was a miracle in terms of how much magical energy he possessed.
House Verditius
Spoiler
In terms of technology, this House was regarded as the best in the field. In fact, one of their notable figures was Leonardo da Vinci, and as researchers, they had been known to develop plenty of magical artifacts that had a history somewhere in the world. The founder, Verditius, was the most outgoing of the wizards, often going out and discussing the sciences and nature with others in his native Iceland. It was said that Verditius lived an incredibly long life, overseeing the building of the capital of his country, and traveled to numerous countries, often sleeping with a different woman in each city. As a result, the House grew to be the biggest of the Houses of Hermes, and the members of the House specialize in the creation of magic weapons – blades, bullets, whatever can be used as a weapon were inscribed with runes melted into the material itself; similar to the items of power used by Bonisagus, but rather than using it as a catalyst to strengthen their magic, the weapon itself was magical.
I will use this part to mention a few pointers. First off, I chose not to use numbers because I want to focus on potential rather than current ability. I don’t want to create a case where unaware magicians are going to be weaker than magicians growing up with a magical background (like if you were descended from a founder).
I also ask that if you plan to take part in magical nobility to come to me first, so we can throw personal messages back and forth with information pertaining to each house outside of what is present in this thread.
Also, for those who might be slow on the uptake, House determines which magic you use.
Anyways, read all these pointers, then delete all of the pointers and use this section for whatever additional information you wish to add about your magician.
Well if I understood correctly, we are allowed to play people who haven't discovered their talents yet? In that case will you be assigning one judging from a bio we write?

Spoiler
Through the vast entity that is the Internet, we now find ourselves in an unfamiliar place. A place of new faces, new personalities, and new adventurers alike. This place is the new home of our motley crew, and it is called Batoto. Here, as we meander through bustling streets and cobblestone draped markets, we find the first new person we will meet this day. Diabolical Rhapsody. What is so curious and is immediately the most noticeable thing about this shy soul is his height. Towering over eight feet high and sporting a two-handed mace that weighs more than some men, one would expect this scraggly bearded giant to be a savage barbarian. Yet those who dare try to scratch the surface a touch soon find a kind soul who so earnestly aims to please. Accompanying the vodka that he drinks and sings softly to is a pen quill made of the finest eagle's feather. His tools of imagination and creation, the studious giant fervently writes his passages for us all to see.
LocationSomewhere I can daydream in peace, hopefully.
This sounds like fun... Hmm, it'll be hard to chose...
Guess I'll see how others approach this dilemma...

In the Seven Paths RP (which this RP resembles very much) players were people who didn't know about magic world and they were introduced to it in the beginning of the RP. You still write down which house you are from, but your character IC doesn't know it before the RP starts.
3-4 players were allowed to start the RP as members of main families and their character knew their houses and were more powerful.

Okay another question: Will there be a lot of fighting right from the start or not? I mean the poor rookies would have a hard time deal with that, heh.
Or the one from the... *checks name* Flambeau house. So my point is: Will we have to fight, or not? Because all he houses won't be that good at this. Will here be peaceful times as well..? Or peaceful jobs?
Yeah, you still need to include which House you would be from even if you're unaware of the magical world.
@Anima
Pretty much, yes. Call it bias from me because I made a tattoo mage in the original Seven Paths RP, but I figured I wanted to do more than just self-buff, especially because it'd be too similar to what Merinita's magic basically is.
And yes, mages generally live longer. They also age much more slowly, but note that extending their lifetime and youth is a magical ritual. If you're unaware of magic, you'd age just like any other human being.

Nickname: Canavar (His moniker in the 'Arena', known for his instinctual and rough fighting style the name got stuck.), Cain, Conan
Gender: Male
Age: 24

Biography: The result of a brief fling between a Croat and an Indian, his moter decided to honor the power of bringing a new life to the world. A petite, hard-working lass. She worked multiple jobs to keep the roof overhead and the food in their belly. Woking as a server in an up-end Istanbul restaurant and as a bartender in a back-alley bar at night, it is easy to assume that the struggle for survival made spending time with her son tough.

He had a habit of making friends much older than him and in the suburbs that he grew up in that meant he was into crime a lot earlier than most. He started small, shoplifting, thuggery and small jobs.
It was after the shocking death of her mother that that last chain of hope was brutally snapped by fate. In a pursuit to bring justice he tried methods both legal and illegal but he soon realized that the rich owned the world and the useless feral dogs like were just that, dogs.
The city of desire had failed to bring his to fruition. He used his links and got an opportunity to leave. He traveled on the Black sea to Romania and from there to his father's homeland. Hoping to find him and maybe get him on his side. The search turned out to be a wild goose chase and he ended up burning through his money.
Resorting to what he knew best, he approached the local gang and life restarted as before but he was still angry. Like a black hole he felt rage covering and sucking the life out of him. In his desperation he seeked a release. Luckily, he got one. The underbelly of Zagreb was a concrete jungle and likewise it was a big hunt. He pursued the underground fighting scene. With bare fists he did what others hadn't seen before. The ones gifted like him were never found involved in this. They showed their talents where a hefty price could be charged, yet their was no mistaking the talent he had, it was almost magical. With fists like steel he crushed his foes, with a body made of rock he braved deadly hits. He earned a name for himself in the arena and slowly anger gave way to hunger, hunger for more blood.
For the first time in life he had power and he wanted to use it to its savage best but something about it felt incomplete as if he had some hidden potential, it all sounded cliche but he still couldn't shake it off. Pretty much. You don't necessarily have to be nobility, but the quality of education is generally higher anyways, so I recommend going that path if you want to be aware.
@DR
So, um. The guy is a fighter in the underground fighting scene, if I read this correctly. It's safe to assume that he is currently unaware, yes? The last part had me a little confused. I'm gonna assume his Croatian father was a magi.
And the broadcast is just a OOC thing, it's not something your character should know about yet. Gonna have to edit that part out.
Just a little more clarity on the points above, and then you're good to go.
