Reborn the Monster

Three dead lycans lay still in a courtyard. The vampire and her servant had just left. Minutes passed.

Suddenly the desicated corpse of Lazarus shuddered. His back arched at nearly an impossible angle and his mouth opened in a silent scream. As he thrashed about on the ground he returned to a more normal colour. His skin, stretched tightly over his drained body, flushed and filled out as blood flowed once again through him. The missing pieces, the gaping wounds, the horrific injuries vanished as bone reset and muscle knitted itself back together. Within seconds a dead man was alive again.

Lazarus gasped for breath as he stared up at the stars. Again. He'd survived again. How many times had he gone through this? Dying only to be wrenched back from the abyss? Two hundred years he'd lived. Two hundred years and dozens of deaths. Was this a curse or a blessing?

He resolved to lie down a little longer until that scent caught his nose again. In an instant he was back on his feet. Lazarus stalked over towards the dead lycans and leaned down by the female. Carefully he checked her body. Her hands were scarred and there was missing fur around her neck; the lycan had been a slave. Poorly treated by the looks of things. She was late third trimester by appearance. The thing he'd smelled that caused him so much anger confirmed that.

He could smell her water had broken. Either before she died or when she was brought down.

It made sense. The lycans must have attacked the city, explaining the reek of fire and sounds of battle. These two would have been abused slaves who saw a chance to escape, desperate to get out when so close to birth. To raise their child in the wild as it should be, not under the eye of a vampire who saw them as less than a person. But that life was gone now; the dream just a slick red puddle beneath their bodies.

Lazarus put his ear to the woman's bulging stomach and listened. There, quiet, were the sounds of a life struggling. The tip of his finger shapeshifted into a wickedly sharp claw with tiny tufts of red fur sprouting around it. Carefully he used his makeshift scalpel to open the woman's body and cut into her swollen womb. With gentleness surprising of a man who'd lived a life drenched in blood he pulled the screaming child from it's dead mother.

It wasn't in good shape, he could tell. But it was alive. To a lycan, life was survival. An endless struggle. Strength came from overcoming adversity. If this little one lived through this, he would grow to become something incredible. It was almost enough to make Lazarus wish he would stay alive long enough to see it.

Lazarus lifted the babe and touched his forehead to the childs. He uttered an internal prayer to the moon to help the newborn through this trial. He held it close and red fur grew from his skin around the baby to keep it warm in the cool night.

The Ballad of Sir Galalot

The Crusaders fought poorly, their cohesion shattered by the stronger than expected vampire assault. A border skirmish had ended badly and the humans were now breaking. Their shieldwall faltered and it seemed the vampires would breach through. It meant the death of the men and women they were defending, but there was naught else they could do.

And then he arrived. A figure wrapped in golden glowing light leapt clear over the Crusader's lines and into the midst of the vampires. Runed platemail covered him from head to toe. In his hands was a greatsword almost as large as he was. Alone he stood in the center of the vampires. They swarmed him

And he danced.

Martial prowess too elegant to be considered mere swordplay brought each vampire low as they came for him. He dodged each claw, each sword, each lunge by the tiniest of margins. Every swing of his blade left another vampire dead. Within moments the vampires had thinned and their morale cracked. With a mighty roar the Crusaders, now bolstered by their saviour, pushed forward.

What vampires could flee ran immediately, but most were caught between the shieldwall and the knight. Soon there were none left. The Crusaders cheered for their hero, the bravest warrior in all the lands, Sir Galalot of the Order of the Knights Valiant.

Sir Lancehad found Galalot standing alone in the ruins of a building. He was staring at the charred remains of a skeleton. One far too small to be an adult or even a teenager.

"I'm leaving the Order, Lance", he said. "I will still do what needs to be done, but alone now. I need answers to questions in my heart"

Lancehad reeled back in shock. "But Galalot", he begged, "you were always the best of us. Why would you do this?"

Galalot turned to him slowly and Lancehad could see the weariness behind his friend's eyes. He licked his lips and hesitated. It was obvious that what he wanted to say was hard for him and would be even harder for Lancehad to hear. But Galalot had done so much for mankind. The youngest to ever join the Order and incredibly skilled. A decade later, he good he had done outweighed every other Brother in the Order. It was the least Lancehad could do to listen to him.

"Sometimes I look to the heavens, Lance. I look to them", he said, "and I now think they are empty. Or perhaps, if not empty, then whatever dwells up there is far too monstrous to worship"

Lance felt tears in his eyes. His faith screamed at him to rebuke Galalot butwas outweighed by his love for his Brother. "If not for love of God, Brother, then why do you fight?" he croaked, tears flowing freely.

Galalot gave a small smile and placed a hand on his Brother's shoulder. "Because it doesn't change what is right"

The sword caught the lycan unawares, puncturing his throat and eliciting a loud gargle. The wolf thrashed, flinging Bajrang back. Struggling to survive it pulled the sword out. Blood flowed freely from the wound.

A great howl echoed over the street and the lycan's eyes widened. It attempted to leave, to retreat as the call demanded, but the blood loss was too great. It fell to the ground and pitifully tried to drag itself forward for a few moments before it went still completely. Bajrang had finally killed the bastard.

The other wolf had run off with the howl, which suited him just fine. He had other matters to attend to. The parents were not seriously harmed, merely shaken up. He made sure they were safely inside before tending to the last thing.

The broken form of the knight remained under his mace, but as he drew close he could see the knight was still alive. The damage was clearly too much and he would not survive much longer. He knelt down beside the dying warrior.

At some point, Galalot had taken off his gauntlet. He grasped Bajrang's hand with a surprising amount of strength. The lycan noticed the knights hand was stretched tight over his skin. It was spotted with age and covered in decades worth of scars from training and battle. Although he could not see into the depths of the knights helm, he could feel the weight of the old man's gaze.

"There is nothing in this world, brother, than what we make ourselves. So make good"

The tight grip of the knights hand slackened. In Bajrang's hand he'd left a small medallion, a motif of a winged sword on the side. Although clearly a holy item it did not harm him.

And so ends the ballad of Sir Galalot, the bravest knight in all the land.

The Dark

in_the_dark_by_tradd-d71g1xz.jpg

Seven days ago…..

Dew sat in his little office cubicle, staring listlessly at the many holo screens  that inundated his workspace that lit gloomy atmosphere with their characteristic blue tinged light. He counted exactly five hours, twenty five minutes, four seconds and, so milliseconds until he could get back home and start on that raid. Information for the raid had been expensive,  as had been the preparation. However if his guild could pull it off, the payoff would be tremendous, and perhaps even enter the big leagues.

Thats all he wanted really, to elevate his guild, the Gordian Knot into a pro guild. It would allow him to finally quit this dratted job of his, money wouldn’t be an issue. He sighed and decided to take a small break. Switching on the news, there was a big debate over 696, some new virus that was spotted in the wilderness of the internet. Of Course rumors had clearly blown the damn thing out of proportion, since it was impossible for code to exhibit ‘magical’ effects. Hence it was definitely impossible for code to cause someone to disappear..

He snorted derisively at their far fetched claims and shut down the display. He decided that it was time for a small break, and the best way to enjoy a break was of course inside the game. He took out the Simulator from his backpack, it was a simple black orb, with a thin cord wrapped around it. Unwinding the cord he plugged it into a small port behind his ear. Instantly the device whirred into life and within a few seconds he had already warped into the game.

He spawned on the top of a large hill, all around him he could see similar hills as far as the eye could see. All of them were covered by the same blue green grass. To his east was a large forest, whose edge glimmered with the raw magic exuded by the trees within. Dew was of course smiling  broadly, the game always made him do that. He stood for a few moments to let the ambiance soak in.

In fact he would have continued to do the same, if it wasnt for the searing flash that suddenly cut past his cheek. He turned around as fast as his bulky armor would let him, his rather humongous shield at the ready. It was of course a manticore, red and bristling with spines. Its emerald feline eyes regarding him with some measure of intelligence.

However, it was then that he felt something was wrong, he could feel liquid drip down the side of his cheek, and that searing feeling wasn’t stopping. It took him a few minutes to realize what was happening. He was bleeding. He was also feeling pain. Both supposedly totatly impossible in the game. He then began to feel something that he hadn’t felt in that in the game, ever.Fear. Something was very wrong.

He spoke aloud “System Command, Log Out”, however nothing happened. The usual pillar of golden light that erupted from the heavens never appeared…….

---

Location:Junction City, Hopes Gambit, Now

[S]

It had been a week of horror, a week of despair. The last of the survivors were cooped up in the tower that had served as the home of the guild Gordian Knot. It served as the command center for the last territory held by the Players. In better days times the Hopes Gambit had been called the Junction Bazaar, but now it had lost much of its sheen none of the neon lights glowed and all the vendors had disappeared.

Right after the Incident, the Shadow had erupted from the innards of the labyrinth. Relm by relm it made its way towards Junction City, turning each it another flavor of the Helmrealm. The Players might have been able to fend it off, if not for its most horrible price. Those killed by the forces of the shadow, did not return, instead they became corrupted, immensely powerful beasts, yet retaining their intelligence sans their humanity. The Players had begun calling them the Revenant.

Their every loss made the Shadow stronger, and so now after days of intense war the Players stand upon their last stretch of uncorrupted land…..

OOC:

Tell me what happened during these seven days, and how you finally ended up in the Hopes Gambit. Use this time to form up ties with each other, I want everyone to be at least acquainted with everyone...

First of all, let me get the aspect of the tech used, the RL setting is pretty far in the future. Everyone has a neuro-machine interface  implant, like ghost in the shell if you will. The machine as such connects to a port behind the ear, and its primary use is to act as a subsidiary processor for the game.

Now as for pain, the interface does allow for the transmission of all sensations, however their are very severe and powerful locks over this. The breaking of these locks is a serious offense, and is very high on law enforcement hit list.

As for the game, no, pain is not a factor. Its just not good business nor design and very illegal. However there is a sensation that takes the place of pain, best way to describe it as kind of numbness+prickly feeling.

Another point is that a NPC wont feel pain. Why? they are not living things, and hence have no real sensation of pain. All NPC's are controlled by a super AI, torture of any kind would cause whatever NPC law enforcement to swarm onto you.. eventually.

Via hacking and such It might be possible to make people feel pain, but will be seriously investigated by both the company and law enforcement. You can literally go to jail for a long time, think of it like violating a persons mind, cause literally that is what it is.
