Shin

A good assassin moves unseen. A great assassin moves unnoticed.

 It seemed as though no one questioned his backstory. Confidence was, of course, the key. Shin smiled, and carried on with his routine. One of the inn's patrons were the first to respond to his grand entrance. He certainly looked the part of the hero, at least. Blonde and broad shouldered, the foreign knight. Even though Ishido was far away from his home, Shin could hazard a guess at who he was. Devon Blanc, the so-called "Smiling Tiger" of Urvandel.

"A bard? And from the Imperial Court no less. Well, well this is a party after all," he said.

Shin flashes him his brightest smile. "The pleasure is mine. Your reputation proceeds you, Mr. Blanc." From the corner of his eye, he saw the Inn owner, Lucian Graves turn his attention towards him. It was his cue. He unwrapped the cloth covering his shamisen at his back, and kneeled onto the ground, resting it over his lap.

"Everyone, it would be my pleasure to celebrate our meeting with a song."

Shin found that the best way to make everyone believe he was a musician, was to be good at playing music. And he was more than good. As he began to rapidly pluck at the strings, he summoned his companions, both in the art of assassination and the art of music. Materializing from the air, the kamaitachi began to dance alongside his tune, their form translucent like dust in the wind. To start things off, a fast song, one for excitement and adventure. He would save the dirge for later...

Shin

Shin grasped the coin tightly between his hands. It felt light between his fingers. The weight of a life.

The Leafy Green Inn was  modest place. Not large, but not too small either. It seemed to cater to neither common thugs or pampered nobility, resting somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. All in all, it suited Shin well. He knew that the owner was calling for heroes. Shin knew he was no hero. He would be playing the role of the bard, traveling to Ishido in order to compose his magnum opus - the tale of the brave warriors that defeated the monstrous foe. The fact that he could probably hold is own against such monsters was neither here nor there, and Shin had no plan on revealing his skills to this lot. At least, not until the moment was right.

Shin entered the building, scanned its faces. No one he recognized. No one except the face on the coin.

He took a deep breath and prepared himself for his role. With a flourish he bowed and greeted the room, "Greetings heroes, it is pleasure to meet you all. I am Hiori Ichiya, esteemed poet, musician, and official soothsayer from the Imperial Court. Do not worry if you have not heard of me, as I am of little consequence. Just know that your story will be in good hands, as I hope to travel with you all and record your grand and epic deeds."

I suppose I worded my comment poorly. I meant today there are works, as you've mentioned, that can be classified as traditional tragedies which draws from the Greek tragedies. But something like Game of Thrones, is not what others, yourself included, would categorize under this genre. Game of Thrones is tragic, it just isn't a tragedy by certain literary standards, and I'm sure it wasn't meant to be. The catharsis thing was mostly grammatical, I don't think you can be "given a catharsis" just pretend, but it's super trivial just pretend I never brought it up.

tldr, unless you're trying to strictly define something in one genre or another, saying a work of fiction isn't tragic just because it doesn't make the readers cathartic is pedantic.

@DR: Yeah I love both of those. Name of the Wind might be my favorite fantasy book as a standalone, but actually the book I'm looking forward to coming out most right now is the last in Mark Lawrence's new trilogy. If you haven't checked him out, you should. I hard a hard time reccomending the author at first because his first trilogy is pretty slow to get into, and the main protagonist is a bit of a sociopath, but so far the sequel trilogy has been fantastic.

Tragedy isn't supposed to be cathartic, it's supposed to be stirring. Admittedly, GoT isn't my favorite series. Martin is a great storyteller, but I find his actual writing style to be a bit boring. The  show does a good job of bringing the setting to life, I feel it tries to hard to sensationalize everything for the camera, and don't like some of the choices to break away from the books. That said it's definitely the best fantasy tv show out there right now, though not really near the top of my favorite book series.

Well depends on the narrative and perspective but mostly Athena was the most lovable and upright of all the Greek pantheon. Perhaps, Artemis and maybe, Persephone would have a cleaner image but otherwise she outshone all others in acceptable behaviour.

This is far from true, Athena was one of the worst. She did have a pretty name though.

@Imnostrong: You can do whatever you like, I won't restrict you. Though I'd like to mention that while I can be a pretty lenient GM,I can't really overlook it when a player decides to "headbutt bullets."

@Missy: I'll give it a lookover when it's completed.
