#1861927 Introducing www.mangalism.com, manga upload site dedicated to readers, upload...

Posted by Oliverfr on 31 January 2018 - 07:48 AM

Hey Cruz.

If you don't detest negative feedback (sorry about that, but it's meant in a constructive way), there's in my eyes an issue with your site.

I don't remember how it's called, I've also had it with some linux image viewer programs...

To describe it, it's the idea that we scroll down to view the bottom of an image... hit the button to move to the next image... and the next image is loaded from the previous image's last scrolling position, thus from the bottom.

And it's unfriendly, picture us reading, we scroll down to the bottom of an image, hit to view the next image... but we must first scroll up to view the image from the top.

No idea if it's doable, but if you could add, when we hit the previous/next button, a command to position the window back, it would be good.

Good luck with your site, I wish you well :)

#1861831 Ew. The site made with the bought bato.to domain. Ew.

Posted by Oliverfr on 30 January 2018 - 10:06 PM

I wasn't expecting any better, but it's still quite sad to see what has come from buying the bato.to domain

One of the mangapanda-like network of reader sites.

I hope Grumpy sold it for a fortune, at least.

BTW, while I'm here, I wish you guys well in the future, wherever you land to, no matter what reader site you end up picking :)

#1855244 New manga site like bato.to

Posted by Oliverfr on 10 January 2018 - 12:36 PM

I'm also looking for a site like this(though I think everyone is); but if it helps, here are some sites you SHOULDN'T go to. The ones I heard about, I heard about through yahoo answers or reddit threads.

Mangad*ep- Has malware ads, but aren't very obtrusive. Probably best bet so far; thanks kingpipot89!

Mangap*nda- has instant redirects and pop-ups. For me it was completely unusable.

Mangastre*m- heard it has exactly the same problems as Mangap*nda.

Mangare*der- has same problems as aforementioned sites.

Mangah*re- heard it has malware ads and redirects.

Mang*go- has malware ads and redirects.

Kis*manga- has alware ads and horrible navigation that causes you to click them unintentionally. Also redirects.

Mangaf*x- Has malware ads and pop-ups.

Onem*nga- heard it has malware ads and redirects.

Mangap*rk- obtrusive malware ads.

Thespe*trum- has malware ads and redirects.

I'm updating this as I find or remember more sites. Also, most of these sites are still usable with the proper ad-blocks, I personally would just rather stay away from sites that try to give you viruses( or affiliate with ad companies who do the same).

Mangastream is legit, they're scanlators and share their own scanlations in high resolution. I feel it ought not to be on that list.

On another concern, I feel that if some have in their bookmarks quality sites with quality contents, they will not want to share it in public, for fear these sites will eventually crumble under leechbot traffic and die from DMCAs.

#1855239 Batoto will be closing permanently

Posted by Oliverfr on 10 January 2018 - 12:19 PM

Batoto has played an irreplaceable role for me during several years, I will be sad to let it go.

Grumpy? You have bettered by a significant margin the lives of dozens of thousands of people (and probably more!) across many years, this is something only few can boast of, you have every reason to be proud :)

I wish you the best in the rest of your life. Be a bit selfish, take care of yourself, and fare well :)

#1756063 Inactive batoto.net domain

Posted by Oliverfr on 01 July 2016 - 01:38 PM

Howdy!

I fear the question must have been asked already, sorry if that's the case, I didn't find it at least.

Here's the thing: batoto.net isn't working anymore, a whois shows the domain as still valid (expiring in November 2016) but currently "inactive".

May I ask if that is a deliberate choice, and a permament one at that ?

I would personally consider this as a very bad idea, as there are possibly hundreds of thousands of internet links pointing to Batoto.

But maybe, who knows, this might be just an accidental mistake, to have turned the old domain off.

I'd be grateful if I could know the whereabouts of the old domain's inactivity. Thanks if someone can tell me! :)

#1652071 Have the new reader jump to the top of the page faster

Posted by Oliverfr on 24 October 2015 - 11:12 AM

Thank you for all your work, grumpy!

Still, I feel quite ungrateful in telling this (I also manage websites, though not on the same scale, far from it, and I know how it feels, you pour in a lot of effort, and people come to complain about the small bits as if the large picture didn't exist), but can't we give up altogether on this "let's start from bottom, and scoll up" feature ?

As it is, now that it is faster, it attacks the brain and the eye, we still get bits of spoilers for what we can grasp (for we CAN grasp a lot already), and what good is that for ? Well, for nothing anyway, more motion imposed on our soon-to-be exhausted eyes, while all we needed was to start from the top of the page.

Even a paper manga, that's not how you read it after you turn a new page, you don't quick look at the bottom and then move upwards.

I imagine it sounded cool as an added effect, but in terms of user experience, this is negative in all actual regards, to start the page from the bottom and scroll up.

(once again, sorry to be ranting)

#1355062 [Split] Slow loading of images

Posted by Oliverfr on 03 September 2014 - 01:28 PM

Hello !

Not complaining, just reporting in case it's helpful to report.

Since yesterday, occasionally (let's say, once in five times) manga loading pages are SUPER long, in the fifteen seconds range. While re-clicking the link brings back "almost not slow" loading (2-3 seconds).

The rest of the time, the loading is fast as of usual.

#1342438 The ONE button we need to add to the Editor comments field

Posted by Oliverfr on 13 August 2014 - 09:01 PM

I think it would be wonderful if a [ Spoiler ] button could be added to the comments field, in the editor.

So many people would need it... so many !

Here, I made a mockup of what it could look like :

What do you think of the idea ? :)

#1327580 Addition of "warning !" first pages when there's a chapter skip

Posted by Oliverfr on 24 July 2014 - 08:06 PM

Hello everyone !

I am following the Tokyo Ghoul manga ( http://vatoto.com/comic/_/comics/tokyo-ghoul-r3056 ) and this great series has seen, and is now seeing again, many scanlators take part in the project.

There is no competition between the scanlators (it's more between the commenters who try to stir war at times, some of them need to grow up ¬_¬ ), it's all in good spirit, for everyone's benefit, all good.

However, from a reader's perspective, this poses a huge problem, as we frequently see the release of chapters way ahead of the "uninterrupted translation flow".

Today, as I am speaking, the chapters 1-83 are already translated and released.

Today's new additions are the chapters 85, and 99.

Which means we're skipping the chapters 84 and 86-98.

I didn't read the chapter 99, but according to a shocked comment left by someone not wary enough, something MASSIVE has happened, and I'd hate it if other people got spoiled by accident :(

And here comes my suggestion : that it becomes VERY easy to force the addition of a "WARNING CHAPTER SKIP" first page in a chapter's release, to tell "you are skipping one or several chapters, and getting ahead of the flow of the translated chapters. Proceed at your own risk : spoilers, revelations, and surprises."

The reason why this is necessary, in my point of view : the vast majority of the readers aren't paranoiac enough and will not check if a newly released chapter is the direct sequel of the previously released chapters. Because, after all, why would it be otherwise ? HAH! N00b, because Tokyo Ghoul ! *cough*

We can't rely on the scanlators to add such a warning page, most often, they don't, because, from their at this moment elitist point of view, it's natural to compare the number of a chapter against the previously released chapter numbers - something about which I strongly disagree, nobody does that, you can't expect everybody will adapt to your own idiosyncrasies. Or maybe it's just not their job, they're kind enough to do translation, editing and releasing, let others deal with the rest.

Well, you see my idea. If that's technically feasible, it would be really GREAT to have this feature to protect the readers :)

Sorry for the wall of text, and cheers !

Oliver

#724682 A really, really small improvement with language selection

Posted by Oliverfr on 17 June 2013 - 01:20 PM

Hello !

I'm currently using another computer to browse batoto, so I have a "new visitor, newly registered" experience.

And in that regard, there's a small thing that troubled me.

It's not a complaint, simply a small improvement suggestion :)

In the home page as well as in the My Follows page, there's the Language Settings part. In there, we can tick either to see all languages, or the select languages of our choice, and then, we click save.

Twice did I click that, twice did it fail to work.

Until I understood that ticking one of the languages does NOT tick off the option to select all languages above. We must manually tick "only selected languages", even whe we tick some of the language boxes below. It'd be more logical to have the "all languages" auto-unticked when we tick the boxes below...

As I said, this is a really small detail ;)
