#462221 Listen to the Song Above

Already posted it; great song. Good rendition.

Some more post-rock. Frames is a distinctly more underground band than the Explosion in the Sky post-rock giants. Still, a lovely, climatic song nonetheless.

#449142 Countdown to the End of the World (as we Know it[?])

Posted by shard2323 on 10 December 2012 - 04:25 PM

Likely repeating what has already been laid bare, but the basis for the 2012 doomsday prophecies are limited. More or less, they are misinterpretation (as in the Mayan calendar) or baseless assertion made by individualise with no proof. The day itself--the 21st of December--marks the end of a cycle over 5,000 years in the making via the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, true (Fry, 2012). Various astronomical cycles care occurring It's not monumental by any means. Far from it. Nonetheless, to societies based on religious fervour and who had advanced astronomy for the time, this year would undoubtedly hold some significance. No one contests that. The only problem is that there is no classic Mayan text of any kind, nor any indication that 2012 was anything but (perhaps) the start of a new astrological cycle (MacDonald, 2007).

To summarize, it is a group of people (not a lot, but certainly an embarrassing number) who are coming off with baseless assertion from the top of their head, or with minimal reason for doing so. A child could do that much.

Jason faps to this. I like it though. Very atmospheric--the bass guides it enough so that it is not arrhythmic before the guitars start. When the guitars do kick in, it still manages to keep the general feel. Interesting piece. Thanks for the share.

What sort of song is that? Like what genre?

It's considered indie/alternatives. Their use of vocal harmonies, modal melodies, and experimentation (plus a pretentious singer, lol). It is really more a cross-genre endeavor though; hard to actually define :/.

Ah this brings back pleasant memories, don't know why but this song always makes me feel good.

Spoiler

Holy shit--dat intro. Great piece--I don't even mind when the bass comes in for once xD.

Meh. It has a nice musical quality; I like the bass progression, but I can't get into it. :/

Give this piece to at least 4:50. Kayo Dot is a long winded, experimental band, afterall.

Meh. I think my mother ruined the song for me during her mid-life crisis.

#415355 Depression and Suicide

Posted by shard2323 on 03 November 2012 - 06:33 AM

As pointed out, suicide is obviously against survival instincts. But let's be serious: that doesn't make it wrong. What's "right" and what is "natural" are two different things; a mother dog will eat its pups if they smell like a rival's or--on the off chance--she is starving. Does that make said action right? Obviously then, morals are something more socioculturally imbued than natural: Ergo, whether suicide is right, wrong, or even wasteful. is utterly subjective. The best you can do is agree to disagree.

Moreover, the only reason a human can commit such a blatant instinctual contradiction is due to highly evolved cognitive processes. Viva la frontal lobes, and such shit.

With the basis covered, my personal views on suicide are pretty bland. While I don't agree with it in useless cases (yes Amanda Todd, we're fucking looking at you), I don't condemn it in circumstances I view as appropriate. My views are of course my own, and as such, my justification is largely personal. It suffices to say that I can agree with a person who says depression is a just cause for death. Anyone who's been through true clinical depression will likely agree--it's not a joke. Your hopes, dreams, ambitions, and even level of activity are demolished through months of fighting against a feeling of worthlessness. One that you literally can't win against. One that keeps popping up in your life no matter what you do. If, via experiencing this, someone is drawn to kill themselves, I personally view it as nothing to sneer about.

Wow. o.o Surprised at the content--nice use of brass and horns, as well as samples overall. Very excellent use of scale/modal tonality as well, without overpowering the entire piece with superfluous, non-genre feel. Thanks for the share <3.
