Approved.

#1782670 Contributor Request

Posted by Caek on 13 February 2017 - 04:03 PM

Approved. Just want to let you know that to flag chapters for deletion, unapprove and rename them to something like "DELETE."

Other than that, have a lovely day. :)

#1781847 I added a chapter but...

Posted by Caek on 09 February 2017 - 09:22 PM

Get Contributor status. Until then, myself or one of the other contributor mods will need to approve chapters.

(I'll try and get to it soon.)

EDIT - Checked and done! Thanks for your patience.

#1777110 Scanlate or not to scanlate? A quality issue

Posted by Caek on 02 January 2017 - 03:39 PM

Basically - just do it.

From my own experience, here are a few "mindsets" I've developed about translating:

1) Recognize what's important.

Make sure you get meaning across. How do these characters feel? What will add to the reading experience?

Ultimately, you can afford to make mistakes or roughly translate in sections that are not essential.

2) Your time is valuable.

The more people you have working on something, the more communication delays there will inevitably be.

For that reason, I avoid dedicated proofreaders and quality-checkers. Have your redrawer / typesetter go over it.

3) Make purposeful mistakes.

If you're ever unsure on what the translation for something should actually be, go with your first thought!

Then, go back and check for consistency when you're done.

#1770195 So Batoto it an active Yaoi Website now?

I'm not a huge yaoi fan, but it's posts like these that make me glad I translated Delivery Boy Debacle. ^_^

#1768432 Scanlations... One by One, or In Bulk?

Posted by Caek on 10 October 2016 - 02:20 AM

@raveysas @Kusunoki

Great to hear some input from some contributors. It's been over 9 months since I started this thread - lots of iteration over time has definitely helped me to improve / refine my scanlating process. I think I'll need to post some new questions to help me get even better, heh. The hard part is gonna be coming up with them. ^_^

Anyway, when I translate a series from the very beginning, I get really invested into it. There's always doubt and ambiguity involved when you translate a series, and I think what causes problems sometimes is that people don't realize that they aren't reading the original story. They're listening to me telling a story that someone else wrote in my own words, subject to the tinted lens of my own head-canon. (e.g. - Yue Hu and Lin Mi are the total OTP of Fairy Captivity, hands down. Shi-Jie and Shi-Xiong should totally go out sometime and date, amirite?)

So... I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I really want people to understand a bit more the process of what goes into a chapter, for me at least - I always enjoy a good chat about scanlation. It's what I've spent hours and hours doing over the past ten months. :)

#1764684 Looking for Chinese>Eng translators! [Saiko+]

Posted by Caek on 14 September 2016 - 01:27 PM

@funnuraba

Licensing is a legal term. It means that you have the actual rights to do such and such with intellectual property, per some agreement. Money is not integral to the process, but it may be involved.

You also have to understand that Batoto is fundamentally a site for comic translators themselves, which may explain why Saiko+ decided to go here to try and find volunteers.

Moreover, while your suspicion of the company itself is not unwarranted, you are fishy for this being your only forumpost, ehh? ^_^

From a translators perspective, at least you get raws and it's perfectly legal. While being paid would be nice, being a volunteer means that you can 1) walk away at any time and 2) translate as usual.

tl;dr - It's all in your head, friend. I don't even know what the problem is, apart from you having to do research about the particulars of this.

#1763860 Saiko+ Banner Opt Out?

Posted by Caek on 09 September 2016 - 02:27 PM

Hiya folks!

The original Saiko+ announcement.

I'm not really sure if Batoto receives money for the banner. Would be nice to see Grumpy post an official release announcement to follow up.

Feel free to message me about the Saiko+ arrangement, if you're interested in knowing what my experience is with it as a translator.

#1759748 Question to all Batotonian contributers

Posted by Caek on 02 August 2016 - 10:52 PM

Has anyone ever had experience with a "Fraud translater"?

Like, your translater doesn't know any Japanese, Korean, or whatever language and guesses based on the panel context.

If so, give us the story on your suspicions and how you caught him/her.

This sort of situation is probably highly unlikely, but i think it would be pretty funny if one actually existed.

I once tried translating Japanese and Korean using Google Translate - what a massive pain in the ass, trying to sort through that mess.

At least with Chinese I have at least a 50/50 shot at getting it right. :3

#1748728 I don't know how to write romance. Help.

Posted by Caek on 13 May 2016 - 04:11 PM

Could you, by any chance, post one of them? I'd love to try and add to it and what not. In exchange, I'll give you an excerpt from something stupid I wrote last year.

Spoiler

#1748651 Auto Reddit Posting policy

Posted by Caek on 13 May 2016 - 01:58 AM

I don't recall seeing such things on /r/manga. Are you referring to other subreddits?

I'm fairly certain Bato.to is not integrated with reddit, so your group may be out of luck regarding such things.

#1748595 What does this kanji mean?

Posted by Caek on 12 May 2016 - 06:20 PM

First one is not actually kanji. It's the Japanese kana "shi" (シ)

Second one means "middle"

#1740233 Manga that you want translated/picked up

Posted by Caek on 29 March 2016 - 02:04 PM

Looks interesting!

How much work does it take to do machine translation of this? I'm not sure if I would have the time to do another series, but I'm willing to do proofreading on the more confusing parts.
