the world is changing, and this corona work from home will speed things up even more as people work more from home... i hope it can even out things a bit, so every state should be considered a flip state

i have a cousin here who has threatened to vote republican just to send the democrats here a message lol.... i told her good luck

What message would that be sending Democrats...? If you want "just send a message" of dissatisfaction, there's exactly one way: Vote for a third party. Anything else signals either that you either just didn't care... or liked the other party better? Voting is anonymous, after all.

Well, I suppose I do understand the sentiment nonetheless; there's definitely a part of me that would like to see Texas go blue in this election in the hopes it might encourage the current Republican party to see their current trajectory as a mistake. But then, like, I'm reasonably sure that's being optimistic about what conclusions they would come to.

But on the other other hand—and I realize your friend might not have been talking about the presidential election, but—Biden was essentially chosen because he is the least-inoffensive candidate one could rustle up..? Symbolically protesting his nomination would seem to do nothing—no obvious further optimization can be done to not upset people. (I cannot say the GOP is in the same boat there)

Vermont. Bernie is a socialist, he only puts on the democratic hat when he wants to try for president. And he's only from Vermont. He definitely left it for his political career and returned when he was old.

Rather, I thought he was a self-described socialist all the time? It matters what definition of socialism we are talking about, though, since not everyone is on the same page here? Are we talking expansive welfare programming funded by heavy taxes? Authoritarian Marxism? I've always been under the impression that he is, at least professionally, quite firmly more towards the former, which isn't that radical a departure from current politics.

imo the means of production is pretty much a good indicator of how socialist one is- if you're in manufacturing and require large scale group cooperation you tend to be more socialist

I can't find any de-facto evidence either way but given the tendencies of less-educated people in the country tending to lean conservative, and given who operates said means of production in this country... I would honestly expect white-collar workers to be more socialist-leaning, rather than manufacturing.

I could be wrong here. If you are indeed using having ideas about "workers seizing the means of production" as the definition of socialism (which isn't unpopular), that manufacturing-centric view might indeed be more popular in manufacturing.

Having said all that, I think most socialist definitions also talk about distribution and other stuff, such as is more sensible to talk about when handling things equitably for everyone—and in such cases I'm back to suspecting it's going to be more popular in white-collar communities, for aforementioned complex American cultural reasons. Maybe.

43 so i ended up paying a guy 400 bucks for labor, and about 750ish for the actual item (pre-tax) The hardest part was actually getting the exhuast pipe to fit directly over the exhaust system. That was actually the longest time it took, getting the thing to twist and turn into the appropriate angle. But it's 12 years parts so eh, should be worth it I guess

Could still be worse, but ouch. :/

44 oof can't believe I forgot to count. Good luck with the car.

It's been a long time without you my friend. I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.

Sniff, batoto, loved those days where I stayed in bed and read desert punk. When desert punk actually made sense. And it didn't go all political.

blue collar workers can be socialist too :3

texas farmers at the beginning of 1900s had their own self-organizing movement, trading goods and stuff

yes Texas

but in any case you have to have goods to trade imo... how else do you get humans to get together in one big place?

i think thats one of the biggest reasons why the socialists have to take over means of production - without things to produce that you can trade, you can't socialize

Honestly I always thought "seizing the means of production" was—at least originally—a revolutionary strategy, not a plan of governance. Sort of a next-level collective bargaining ploy.

One which I've always thought was a bit optimistic—has anyone actually done it, on a large scale? Seizing stuff in broad daylight is the prerogative of ruling classes, or of armies (like Russia's or China's "people's" armies during their respective revolutions, which turned out roughly as one would expect: Complete dictatorships.)

Closest I can think of off the top of my head is some stuff Ghandi did, the success of which which was far from rooted in just that, and to my (extremely limited) understanding was as mucn founded on the idea of stopping exploitive industrial production—not so much commandeering it.

And his philosophy was, of course, super-anti-materialistic. Definitely not trade as the proper centre of human interaction in his eyes.

Of course! I spoke only of averages, percentages, and generalisations.

(And only for current America, too; it's not a fundamental thing that our conservatives happen to he anti-socialist, mostly an undead cold-war byproduct)

Less politics and more old people musing over how the world even works anyway. Politics just happens to be an aspect of that.

Yeah, I almost stopped and pointed out earlier that manufacturing is a a 10% share of our economy—it would cause logistical chaos beyond that if it stopped, but taking it over isn't really taking the country anymore. (I guess you could do it in China instead, where our stuff is actually produced, but they're already convinced they've had their socialist revolution—and those who realize that that's bull, are also probably also not eager to try another one.)

But fundamentally, I feel like a lot of people don't take into account that Marx lived in the industrial revolution and all of his writing is heavily geared towards how the world was then, not how it is now.

52

It's like two slaves bragging - "My master whips me only twice a day!" "But my master gives me extra pay for being wiped three times!"

People always compare themselves to people in the immediate vicinity. Sometimes this gets really tragic—I remember there was a bit of broken-windows rioting some years back in a poor neighborhoods where a good portion of the local black folks felt justified wrecking and looting the local (and also poor) Korean immigrants' businesses, and it sure felt like it was because that's who they could see and get to—but of course all of them were victims: It's clawing at the person next to you who has a slightly larger pieces of driftwood to cling to, rather than the people (who you've probably never met) who had both of you or your ancestors shoved off the boat in the first place.

Of course by now the people who shoved your ancestors off the boat are dead and their decedents are like, "what, this is our boat, it's the only one we have, find your own," in total ignorance. Except for those with yachts who will grab a few driftwood-floaters and employ them to keep everyone else off their boat, unused space be damned.

...I think this metaphor got slightly out of hand. I'll stop now before we get into piracy, naval fleets, and air superiority. ~w~

The previous post was a (very low-quality, off-hand) joke about the post preceding it ^^;

57

Still playing Kenshi actually. I feel like I've experienced about half of what the game has to offer at this point, or maybe more like 3/4 depending on how I weight different as-yet-unexplored avenues (play-styles, locations, etc) in this consideration. It is getting a bit sameish in a lot of parts. I am both fatigued and still having fun.

All of which is to say, I was totally right when, the first time I picked up this game, I went "geez, this is a massive time-sink, there's no way I have time to play this." XD

Too old for games? What does it mean? It's like saying one's too old for reading, or television.

But by the same token, too old to enjoy particular games, I'll certainly grant.

59

This is probably simply one of those things where I'm in the correct niche to enjoy it properly, too.
