Someone in Manga Reddit sent Naver an e-mail on how to support Webtoon authors and got answer back that Naver is planning to open official service in English.

The quality of the translation is going to be the key to the success of this. Slapping the script through google translate as I've seen done on occasion by artists when doing "official" translations isn't going to cut it. Not only is it insulting to the English reader to be given an "Engrish" translation, I'm not sure that would work on a series like Kubera where the specific words used can be incredibly important considering how often Currygom doles out information subtly or in off-hand ways.

The quality of the translation is definitely a concern. They released English translations of Tower of God not too long ago for example and they were pretty poor compared to The Company's.

Naver, already seems to have a website with english translations of some of their comics,

http://comic.naver.com/en/index.html

What's that about?

Is this the promotional website?

SCREAMS AND NEVER STOPS SCREAMING

*although that dark corner of my mind that's always pessimistic is really worried about the translation quality BUT I WILL SHUT IT OUT WITH MY FANGIRL SCREAMING BECAUSE OFFICIAL ENGLISH TRANSLATION DAMMIT*

In all honesty, even if the translations aren't as good as The Company's, I'd STILL support this, because this is the first big step to spreading these talented people's work to a larger audience. And it's legal, official, and will make the artist themselves more money. And if the translations aren't up to par, there's always the option to pester Naver later about that. I think it's more important that they're willing to take this chance.

There's still no confirmation whether Kubera will be chosen, but I really really really really hope so! It has a Japanese translation out after all!

By the way, themantarays, I didn't notice you became comic mod. xD Congrats! Or did that happen a long time ago? xD

^Heh, thanks; it happened about two hours ago. XD I'm itching for the next fight between you and truepurple so I can ban you both. XD X'D Jk, jk.

I'm not too worried about translation quality, simply because if Naver lets us down like that they will face a HORDE of rabid foreign fans, and they'll have to hire a better translator just to figure out all the different ways we're cussing them out. XD

Congratz themantarays : I guess I'll have to behave I have always been behaving so you wouldn't need to ban me. <cough, cough>

But yeah the English description on the back of book 4 that I got wasn't exactly the best of plagiarized English, so I wouldn't expect much. I don't mind being wrong though.

You want to ban the main summaries provider? That should be interesting. :P

Maybe. It is hard enough to show support for something while simultaneously demanding it get better with established things, much less something new:

If they Google translate it and it predictably flops, they could just assume it is because the interest isn't there rather than an understandable objection to being expected to swallow sub-par quality.

If they Google translate it and it succeeds because people want to support it regardless (or just don't care about quality which a lot of people don't), then they'll have no motive to do a better job which takes more time and money.

The absolute best case scenario would be for them to provide a quality product and start from the newest chapters (or at least the latest fan translations in the case of something like Cheese in the Trap) while simultaneously going back and re-translating the old. If they start from the beginning, I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop the project due to a lack of interest because people aren't willing to wait for them to catch up.

I don't know about blog post being translated. Seeing as they are something authors add personally by their choice, it is likely they won't be part of Webtoon translation..

They probably won't be translated, but it'd be nice if they were, as extras. :(

I mean, if they want to lure existing readers, wouldn't it be nice to do so by including blog posts as extras? *_*

And I really want the books in English. >_>

I'm concerned about quality, too. What I've seen of ToG official translation is... awful, to put it mildly. From text to typesetting. I wish Naver hired The Company to do the transaltions :)
