The Other Side of Strange

 

So you think you know a thing or two about the world.  Of course you don’t claim to be all knowing but sure you feel like you know more or less how things get done.   You’re a smart kid and you got a good head on your shoulders so see things how they really are.  You aint one of those that walk through life blind.  You’re eyes are open. 
Right?
 
Of course not. Don’t delude yourself with misinformation or armor yourself in preconceptions and baseless assumptions.  What you are, my friend, is delusional.  Granted, it is a mass delusion that the majority of the population shares so I can hardly blame you for it.  What I can do though is offer you a bit of honesty. 
 
The truth is that things are rarely what they seem.  So much happens right in front your eyes and yet you see nothing of the reality of it.  Don’t feel bad about it though because that just means someone else is doing their job.  For you see, the world is a far more fantastical place than you’ve been led to believe.
What do I mean? Let me put it to you straight.
 
A whole lot of stuff your parents told you was fake and pretend are real.  Witches, monsters, curses, and pretty much all the rest of it in some shape or another.  I don’t expect you to believe me but maybe you can indulge me for a bit.  Just maybe you can look around yourself and instead of accepting the stock explanation for things you let yourself view things a bit more clearly.  The simplest explanation for things and all that.  Honestly, sometimes that murder really was just a monster under the bed.  Sometimes the shadow in the woods really is more than just your imagination.  Sometimes things are exactly what they appear to be and sometimes they are more.
 
Course you don’t have to listen to me.  After all who the fuck am I?  Feel free to turn around and go back to your rational world.  Ignore me.  Forget me.  Tell your friends about the crazy guy.  Or you don’t.  Perhaps you join me here in the real world.  Maybe take up a job and make some friends here.

Premise

The world is filled will magic and mystery and New Brenton is no exception.  More goes on within these streets than people know and that’s for the best if they ever want to get another peaceful night’s rest.  However, some of us do know exactly what happens or enough at least to know that it’s rarely good.  There is more than man or woman here.  Monsters roam about freely in human skin, no offense meant if you just so happen to be one.  There mages who cast their spells and then there those born with special talents that defy even the laws of magic.  Course there are some normal mortals who dwell on this side and perhaps they are the most dangerous ones of all. 

Things are about to become very interesting in New Brenton and like it or not you’ll be caught right in the middle of it.

Welcome to New Brenton

New Brenton has sat on the eastern coast of the states for over three hundred years but it’s history stretches back far before even that but that’s another story altogether.  Save that one for another day.  What you need to know though is that for near as long as anyone can recall New Brenton has been a neutral area where none of the movers and shakers in the supernatural world were allowed to claim.  An oddity to be sure but one that the powers that be have respected for fear of the repercussions.  I know, it sounds strange right?  You just have to recall that it wasn’t all that long ago were mankind wasn’t much more than a blip on the radar and things both ancient and powerful roamed the world.  They left more than a few surprises and when it comes to anything regarding them it is best to err on the side of caution. 
 
So it is that New Brenton is one of the few truly free places in the world which isn’t all that it is cracked up to be.  With the major agencies walking on eggshells here it’s up to third parties to try and maintain order and let me tell you know a lot falls between the cracks. Which is why those third parties are always looking for help to keep the peace.  Not a glamorous job for sure but it pays well enough.
 
Old Town
 
This is the true heart of the city.  One hidden away right in plain sight.  Magics unknown to any save their caster shield it from the prying eyes of normal men and women of the world.  Hidden behind these magics is a sanctuary where the peoples of the supernatural world are allowed to walk about as they truly are and carry out their lives in relative peace.  How’s that possible? 
 
The Lord.
 
A curious individual who runs something of a gang that keeps the peace within Old Town.  It’s no secret that anyone that causes real trouble gets a visit paid to them by one of his lackeys.  These aren’t just any two bit thugs but a real force unto themselves  Few in number as they are they have to be to keep the types that walk about Old Town in line.  As for the Lord himself, he is a sight rarely seen out and about and the number that can point him out of a line up can be counted on one hand.

Undercity
 
Down below New Brenton lies the place known commonly as the Undercity.  Something of a world unto itself in that it has its own rules and way of life completely separate from those above.  Men and women from all walks of life gather down in the sewers when they find themselves with nowhere else to go.  It’s hardly an easy place to live but under the protection of King Joe, an enigmatic giant, it has become livable and as reliable a haven as one could hope.
 
Of course the depths of the Undercity are a mystery that few have riddled out.  There are things down in the depths that can only be called monsters whose faces are best left unseen.
 
Magus Order
 
Over the years the magical community among mankind has found safety in numbers and using those numbers they have protected their existence from the rest of the world.  There were originally dozens of groups across the world but slowly over time they have consolidated and within the last century have become unified within a single order.
 
The Magus Association is governed by a council of senior mages which are elected by every recognized member of the group.  In theory, this should mean they are all equal but in practice there are around a dozen families whose influence far outstrips just about anyone elses and thus control the Magus Association in practice.
 
Within the organization are numerous types of magic users who practice various arts.  There are many lineages who have developed their own kinds of magic which they have honed over generations.
 
Key Families:  Fairchild, Kleiss, Watanabe, Brennan, Quan, Dresdner, Black, Harjo, Van Skapares, Faust, Brahe, Dantès
 
The Church
 
It’s no secret that the church has had a long and sordid history with the supernatural.  There’s bad blood on both sides to be sure but at it’s core the church has never really been able to accept the supernatural as a necessary part of the world despite their apparent civility.  There are several factions hidden within the church who handle relations with the magical denizens of the world and while they harbar varying opinions they do avoid conflicts when possible.  However, there are some that wouldn’t think twice at the thought of hunting down their own enemies.
 
Private Investigators, Bounty Hunters, Privatized Militia
 
With the normal supernatural authorities vacant here there have been a number of other groups that have come forward to fill the void in authority.  There are any number of private armies that collect a small tax from the locals to keep the peace and while they may get rowdy now and again they more or less get the job done.  There are also no shortage of bounty hunters out to make a buck and a name as they hunt down criminals who’ve gone into hiding.  Which leaves us with the private investigators who like to play detective as they dig into everyone elses business in chase of the almighty dollar.  Love em or hate em they are what passes for the law here in New Brenton.

Description:  While there are many villainous elements to be found within New Brenton there are none more powerful than Pavlo Kozel and his crime family.  He has single handedly cornered the market on organized crime within the city, at least on the supernatural side of it.  A man with a courteous and polite demeanour which masks a far more brutal man beneath.   While there have been many who’ve attempted to remove him from power none have made the attempt twice.

 

King Joe

Description:  Joe is no giant and neither is he a king but there aren’t many out there willing to debate the point.  He’s long been the hulking guardian of the undercity and for that they are more than happy to indulge his whims of which he has many.  The king of the undercity is a man of benevolence who offers any and all shelter and protection and is quick to name any a friend.  His eccentric nature, however, borders on the insane but if you able to forgive him these lapses you’d find few men more reliable.

 

Jonathon Briggs

Description:  While there are many churches within New Brenton there is only one with a priest that is fully in tune with the supernatural.  Jonathon Briggs runs a small church in one of the cheaper districts of the city but it’s an unspoken rule that his home is neutral ground.  Anyone looking for a holdout in the middle of a storm need only seek it out and ask and they’ll find the doors open before them.

I've pinned down which 'side' or what not I want my character to be on but the problem comes with the special ability.

All my characters in my RPs always share a common special strength so I'd like to try to be different but I'm sure i'd use that ability 'correctly'.

Name: Ophelia

Age: Sixteen

Gender: Female

Race: Human

 

Background: Ophelia was found in a desert by a man whose name she cannot remember. She had spent her life there, growing up among beasts that remained hidden from the eyes of the rational world. Large lupine beasts with acidic saliva and teeth the size of her forearm were among those she counted as her family. When she was twelve, this man whose name she cannot remember took her from that family. She fought it, of course, but she wasn't strong enough. How could a twelve-year-old girl fight off the sort of man who could stroll nonchalantly into a den of beasts and come out unscathed? Every attempt at escape was thwarted; every meal she rejected was fed to her forcefully; every fevered dream was watched over dutifully. The man whose name she cannot remember became a new parental figure in her life, though she was loathe to admit it.

 

He taught her how to speak English, and how people in the rational world were supposed to act. She learned how to read, basic arithmetic, and about money. They traveled the country and she learned of many things, like how a car engine works and proper hotel etiquette. She learned quickly, though she would later come to understand that it wasn't her natural affinity for learning, but the man whose name she cannot remember's ability to teach. He was quick-witted and kind and it seemed as if everything he ever said to her stuck firmly in her memories. Except, of course, his name.

 

When she was fifteen, she was brought to the town of New Brenton. This would be her new home, he said. They were going to settle down here, she thought, after years of traveling across the country. He had apparently decided that she was well learned enough to function at a mostly normal level of competence. He brought her to his home, a house he hadn't been to in many years, since long before he happened across her in that desert. She slept on a comfortable bed that night, exhausted suddenly as if the years of travel had caught up with her now that she was home.

 

When she woke up, he was gone. So was his name, and his face. So many memories of her last three years were so clear to her, but those two things she was unable to think of. She went around town looking for him, asking everyone if they had seen the man who lives in the once-abandoned house that she had woken up in. The only thing people told her was that no one had lived there for at least two dozen years, and no one knew what the guy looked like.

 

Ophelia decided she couldn't live in that house. It reminded her of him in too many ways, and that just reminded her of her loss. Her old family from the desert, the man she had begrudgingly began to love as a father. She wandered for a bit, living on the streets and stealing food before one day finding her way to the Undercity. She has lived there now for just under a year. She does not interact much with the normal denizens of King Joe's domain, but finds herself with the creatures that many believe should be left unseen. Perhaps they reminded her of her old family, because she was drawn to them for some reason. The kindred spirits of outcasts.

 

Relationships: The Man Whose Name She Cannot Remember -- A father figure that took Ophelia from the desert she grew up in and brought her to New Brenton. She cannot remember his face or name.

 

King Joe -- Living on the outskirts of his area of influence, Ophelia has seen the giant before. They have had a few friendly conversations.

 

Unspeakable horrors whose faces are better left unseen -- Ophelia's new family, so to speak. They aren't the most closely-knit crew around, but for some reason they all act with great kindness towards Ophelia.

Special Skills: Coercive Magics -- Though not something Ophelia would term "magic," as she's never learned any form of magic, nor does she have even a rudimentary understanding of magic, this is indeed something magical. It is what kept her canine family from eating her, and it is what makes the unspeakable horrors in the Undercity refrain from killing her. There is some magic innate within her that forces others to submit themselves to her.

Background:  As a demon Asta is a mystery. She is obsessed with balance and for that she works with the sides of so called good to bring the deviant demons back into the realms of oblivion. Born in the 5th circle of hell, she has demonic energies at her command like the other 6. She is quite powerful but reserved. With her being the last that makes the seven lords, both in number and power, she is Leviathan's sister. But she is of similar disposition to Lucifer, her thought brother. She doesn't bother much with the realm of humans, leaving that job to Mammon and Mephistopheles. To lure them with the seven sins and add them to their armies or corrupt them to cause widespread destruction. But should their plays threaten Hell with Divine intervention, she acts before anyone else to put things back in their place. 

 

Leaving the matters of Hell in hands of her brother she came to the realm of the living a long time ago. To take charge in balancing the miscreant and devious acts of lesser demons, to keep their existence mostly hidden from the usual world. She has been a frequent in New Brenton as most demons think that the 'safe haven' would also extend to them and they can cool of the heat by being inactive here. But she has good contacts in this city and when she wants to find someone, she usually does. Giving them a quick dressing down before sending them directly to eight circle for further punishment.  

 

Relationships:  

 

The Lord: Their Relation is one of equals, given his own wide set of powers. She mostly gets in touch with him through his vice, William Brenning. If there is a demon who has concealed his tracks extremely well, she invokes her relation with him to seek his help.

 

King Joe: He is good-natured, a tendency oft exploited by devious demons. So Asta keeps in personal touch with him, she listens to his whims and helps with whatever under her purview, in return she has a relatively free reign in his domain.

 

Detectives and Investigators: She hires a few dirt-diggers from time to time, to track absconding demons. Most often than not it is a ritual rather than actual importance.

 

Special Skills:

 

Demonic Magic - Her skills are as varied as the magic she wields, controlling the elements to do her bidding or absorbing lesser demons for burst in power, she is capable and dangerous.

Demons are cool.  Just try not to make her too powerful or else I'd have to make equally strong enemies and then the poor city would have to suffer the consequences of such battles.
