Looking for some more unconventional works. Characters and story aren't tied down by conventions or at least take different view of them.

I hate stuff like:
  • Harem lead being dense, spineless wimps that girls fall in love with cause they are "kind"...
  • Shoujo featuring a bunch of random cute boys prancing around in their underwear to win over a meh girl
  • Predictable/Boring like the last 100 chapters of "Kimi no iru machi"
  • Bleach
  • Too Gimmicky (Maou Yuusha)
Looking for stuff like:
  • I am a Hero
  • Hoshi no Samidare
  • Bokurano
  • Oyasumi Punpun
  • 20th Century Boys
  • Death Note
  • Crest of the Stars
I don't really need psychological, or stuff that too out there, but has to be at least as original as TWGOK, Bakuman with one major aspect deviating from the norm.

Hmm, I have some recommendations. A few of these are *very* graphic/violent though, so read them at your own risk. :P

Thanks, I like Melo Holic so far. Reminds me a bit of a book The Sleeping Dragon by Miyabe Miyuki

I have read Berserk, Monster, Pluto, Gantz (anime), Mirai Nikki (anime), Onani Master Kurosawa, I'll check out some of the other ones.

I am looking for series with more story and character development over gags/fanservice. For example:
Angel Densetsu over "Its not my fault that im not popular"
Nana to Kaoru over Prison school.

Thanks for the suggestions though I will try to look at them when I have time.

If you enjoyed Oyasumi Punpun i would recommend Welcome to the NHK it's a masterpiece words can't describe (to me)
If you enjoyed Melo Holic i very strongly recommend reading Hanged Doll and Superior day same author. But read Hanged Doll first
I would also recommend Biomega and Blame!. for me it was a tough read at first but now it's one of my favorite authors.
If you haven't read the gantz manga yet DO IT, manga surpasses the anime by miles.
Dorohedoro is the most unique manga about magic i have read and as non-mainstream as it comes.

A Fairy Tail For The Demon Lord Very orginel setting, art and has one of the best/most originel story to me. I recommend this the most.

For a less heavy story (but still good)
Magician
Desert Punk the main character is awesome (I would actually recommend the anime over the manga)
Akira The manga goes further (and different) from the movie.
Nowhere Boy Dont be fooled by the satire on every mainstream genre. It's a great read and handels some serieus things.
Trace

This should keep you busy :P
