Well, English is my second language, I even studied it in the university for two years, so I am aware of these qualities, Kokai. However, that does not take away the fact that relatively soon into learning the language exceptions to rules start to pop up left and right and things that sound one way are spelled another. Just looking at the way many natives with lower level skills spell their own sentences online is proof enough that it's not straightforward at all. :P

And I must add that though I consider English spelling a pain in the butt sometimes, I still love it, I love learning new words that I have a use for, I love that as the current linqua franca it opens so many doors to communication between people of very different backgrounds because so many of us live surrounded by at least SOME English, and I love the way it, like all foreign languages, also teaches a person to think a little differently, see a little differently, like a gentle culture shoc...
