Been a while. Sorry for the enormous size. I'm using the URL from my site since I'm too lazy to upload it somewhere else.

#259420 Useless yet interesting facts

Here's a fact.

Canola oil derives its name from Canadian oil, low acid. The reason the nickname was created was to stray away from the name of the seed the oil is extracted from, the rapeseed.

Is that a scientific term? Meaning, is it used loosely by the uneducated or is it used by scientifically-minded or educated people to add another layer of precision?

The true origin of the word is unclear, but in the early 20th century, American physical chemist Gilbert Newton Lewis proposed a new unit of time, which is the amount of time it takes light to travel 1 centimeter, which is about 33.3564 picoseconds. He called this new unit of time a "jiffy." Today the term has been redefined to fit other specific measurements in different fields of study, such as electronic engineering and computer science, all of which are still very short periods of time. Of course, many people don't know this and simplify the meaning (use it as slang) down to "a short time." So I guess the answer to your question is both. It is probably used by the uneducated as slang (though I haven't heard it for a while now), while the educated can use it as a term in their specific field of study.

In America?

No, it's worldwide. In the USA its more like 2 deaths per year. My research is probably outdated though since this is taken from a study from 1978-1995.

Then where did this term come from?!?

It's unclear where is exactly came from, but one thing is for certain, Arthur Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes novels, never wrote the phrase anywhere in his books. There was just one time, in the short story The Crooked Man where Holmes ends a conversation with Watson by just saying "Elementary", but it's never seen again. There was a non-canonical film in 1929 called The Return of Sherlock Holmes where Holmes did say the phrase, but the phrase was already well-known.

TBH Not sure there's even any point to counting anymore, a bunch of people are just posting random gobbledygook for kicks and giggles...

It was like that for a while after I first started it, but since we have Potato Hell now, I think we won't see anymore of that.

163. Genghis Khan is actually a title in Mongolian. His actual name is Temujin. Genghis means "universal" or "world" while Khan means "ruler". So Genghis Khan means "world ruler", which is pretty accurate since he was able to establish the world's largest land-based empire by conquering most of the known world. (I'm betting his homies called him Temujin.)

164. The Mongol empire was actually split into four main regions with separate rulers, but still remained one whole empire. The Great Khans ruled China and Korea, the ilkhanates ruled Persia and their territories, the Golden Horde ruled Russia, and the Chaghatai ruled Central Asia.

#96002 Which of the 7 Deadly Sins are you?

Posted by Xbox User on 17 February 2012 - 04:33 PM

I also feel a bit out of place. Everyone else has intricate sins that give readings to their personalities while I just like eating.

I don't think intricate is the right word. A sin is a sin. We humans are the ones that place them on certain levels.

You're both wrong! It's Atari.
