I mean, that's because we talk about the city more than the state itself (it is the biggest city in the US, and the whole and tend to drop the "city" off the end of the city name (indeed in making this post I googled "new york population" and google gave me the city)... which sucks for the 36% of New Yorkers who do not, in fact, live in New York City.

I have remarked before that I'm more likely to know who the mayor of NYC is than the governor of NY (and indeed, while we hear a lot about ex-governor Cuomo a lot lately because of scandals, if I look up the current governor, I've never heard of her, although she's new; mayor Bill de Blasio on the other hand I think I heard of back when he wasn't in office but just campaigning).

But, the NY metro area (that is, including places like Newark and Long Beach, just like you include east and south bay cities in SF area or the similar myriad patchwork of cities in the LA area) has more people than New York state (it spans four states' borders) itself, so what are you going to do?

Never? They do appear to have gone into animation, though.

...classic linguistic argument aside, I am only aware of its existence from seeing an article titled/emblazoned with something like, "if you watched it and loved the story, just don't come to the game it's based on and expect there to be anything more there" which made me chuckle a bit. Reminds me of how MtG grew all that extensive lore that never really could fit back in the game (though they, at least, could make cards referencing it).

(Though I suppose the king of "stories that wildly outgrew the confines of their game" is probably just ol' Touhou.)
