Here is a strange idea. The counter bot idea:
The bot will scan from every big reader all their manga's they have -- and their respective links.
Then all the "comics" will be compiled into one big list.
Each and every comic will their own page with a table of context linking to a page for each chapter.
Each chapter will have links to all the different site you can read the chapter from.
The bot will create empty chapters up to five ahead (saying that the chapter hasn't been released yet).
Once the initial process is done, the bot will wait for updates from all of the readers.
The theory behind this idea is if, this "blog" gets popular, people can choose which reader to read from. And by controlling the blog you can decide which readers to be included in the list. This takes advantage of google searching. Sometimes google doesn't provide you the results you want and you have to go to many pages before you find something working. By having a blog with different links, people will easily bookmark this page for future reference.
I think this should put batoto in the same playing field as mangafox and whatnot.

I remember that OneManga used different servers (at least 2) and encypted urls to safeguard their images.
Something like server A having the website, server B having the data, and a script ensuring that the only way to access B's data is from A's encrypted links (with sessions managing and longish nested dir trees).
A common crawler would end up missing pieces, pages or whole directories, especially if using arbitrarily nested directories just to add more jumps.
But that's also a big mess to manage.
It's still possibile to snatch B's data, but that would require manually browsing the site on the first server, following the links (by loading the script) and saving the images from the clipboard cache.
The idea of splitting/rebuilding the images would also add quite a bit of time needed to save the complete image.
Using print-screen to compose a picture can't be stopped but takes a lot more time
Can't think of anything else without requiring a user-restricted access (that would render the whole site somewhat useless) or being a complete 360° jerk.
Since laws can't help and ethics are something forgotten or twisted around by most, the situation is this crappy.

I was reading Mirai Nikki awhile back and the scanlator (some anon from 4chan) decided to switch one page with a fake and funny translation (I really liked him since it was funny trolling) which involved memes and then would follow up with the actual translation right afterwards, so maybe you could double translate a page with an advertisement to your scanlators site or Batoto while keeping the lulz going.

If you really want to screw with a bot, do a bit of coding that makes say, a fake gallery of 10 images.
When clicked, image 1 goes to 2, Image 2 goes to three... but Image 10 goes to Image 1 again.
Unless the bot has been specifically programmed to watch out for that, the bot will get stuck in a loop, scanning those pages over and over again.
Hidden links to fake pages full of hundreds of fake links also work. Bots typically examine HTML sources instead of what's actually displayed or any other form of intelligent algorithms.
With some creativity, you can even do more with this -- a fake gallery of say, the top 100 manga on MangaFox, each with fake images, each going in a loop, etc etc.

Scanlation in and of itself is a form of piracy. Even if we buy the scans, we technically have the right to do what we will to them, but the minute we begin distribution of it, that becomes piracy. The difference between scanlators and batoto VS Mangafox/Noez is that we do not aim to profit off of it while it is Noez's entire form of business-- it IS their business.

Greetings,
I was still reading Mangafox few days ago, and I got some pages, warning about a company called Noez, making profit on scanlation, and various stuff. I'm pretty sad about this, so I am slowly switching on Batoto (hoping it is more scanteam-friendly).
Regarding your concern about a bot...I only read the first six pages, so I can't tell whether someone thought about this idea :
- Make a script which purpose is to display images vertically. Cut your pages into parts (like the top and the bottom). In a database, create a table listing every page, and every cut part related.
- Whenever a reader access to a page, the script get the data related to the page, retrieve the right cut parts, and displays them in the right vertical order (the top, then the bottom). There is no space between the parts, so there is no seam visible.
Regards.

Hi i am joining in the middle of this thread ( and without reading it all since is so looooooooooooooong ) so...well...sorry?!
i was a mangafox reader since not long ago, until i discovered batoto and came to love it. After reading about all the shits mf did and is doing i tought i could be of help since i am a web developer so here's some advice
To improve the security on your domain/server there are many ways, first of all you need to discover if they copy the content from a bot or manually ( the last one would be insane to do imo but still possible... ) and this is the hardest part, but still hard not impossible, after you detect the bitch's nature all you have to do is to find a way to block it and any bitchupgrades since they could change they way to steal data
Case bot:
php offers a lot of ways to detect them and STOP them
Case of manual copy ( seriously get a life mf's staff ):
in this case the only way to protect your content would be to insert the image inside a "safe box" ( don't google that i named it like that ) using php
In both those cases you can do something they can't avoid.
If you need any advice you can PM me and i will give you a big free hand ( by skype )
PS: i'm not random talking, i've had to do something like this many times

Suggestions -> Random comments and discussions -> Same suggestions -> Oddly similar comments and discussions -> Same suggestions......... and repeat.
I've said it before and I'll say it again since this really is the last time. We will not be discussing publicly on what we are doing nor what we plan to be doing in regarding to this problem.
