Part 1:
Hide and Kaneki was eating at Big Girl, talking about random stuff. Like where to eat if they get a girlfriend. (Something about pasta and salad?) People nearby were talking about ghouls. Hide said with a serious face that if a person's girlfriend is a ghoul, he would like to have a contacts. Kaneki said don't be that desperate, it is not the time to give up.
And then the novel went about how when Kaneki met Rize, and how he became a ghoul afterwards.
Part 2:
The TV broadcasts news about ghouls every once in a while, and people were whispering about them in the streets, as two ghoul investigators have been killed in the 20th ward.
Nagachika reaches Anteiku and had a conversation with Kaneki. He thinks that after Kaneki's transplant, he was in a very poor state, and started becoming more normal after working at the coffee shop. The coffee shop also took care of him and Kaneki after being in a car accident, and he feels grateful towards them. In addition, he wanted to see Touka, who is pretty cute.
Kaneki came up and Hide ordered cappuccino, and they both started chatting.
Then Hide thought back to a few days earlier. Because of his classes, he didn't meet up with Kaneki, and went to Anteiku. Kaneki was serving the guests coffee noticed Hide and approached him, his expression bleak. Hide wondered: What happened?
Kaneki told him it is better if he does not temporarily come to the coffee shop, as the manager's information said there are suspicious people wandering about. Hide asked if anything happened, and Kaneki said no. Hide laughed, asking how that conclusion was reached(??). But Kaneki's expression remained bleak. Hide wondered "Is there something you can't say?"
The second day, Hide was poundering Kaneki's words in class. They knew each other for a long time. He knew what Kaneki is saying is for his own good(?) but who is this suspicious person?
Someone called him from the back, and he noticed it was his professor(?). A tall and thin male student was also walking towards him, along with a girl who appeared to give off a witch-like atmosphere(?). Turns out they are members of Supernatural Research Society. Sanko (the girl) is a newcomer to the group, and while flipping through some notes she asked Hide if Kaneki showed any signs of being a ghoul.
Hide shook a little, asking what did they say? The male student Kiyama said they suspect Kaneki is a ghoul.
Sanko asked if Hide knew that ghouls cannot eat human food, and Hide said yes, he has read Ogura's book on ghoul dismantling. Sanko said so he also has an interest in ghouls and this makes it easier. When was the last time he had seen Kaneki ate?
Ate, Hide asked.
Turns out the Occult club were investigating people who hasn't been seen in the university dinners(or cafe/food related places?) for over a month, as it is possible they are ghouls.
Hide was shocked. Only suspecting them with this information? There is a limit on how reckless you can be, there are plenty of people who don't eat in university!
Which is why we investigate each person and look at their circumstances(?), Sanko replied. So last month(?), have you seen Kaneki-kun eat? They drank coffee together, Hide replied bluntly, even though he knew this won't be accepted. He also added that they have ate lots of meals together before.
Sanko said they will be investigating this month(?), and there are other people to investigate as well. They intended to leave, not listening to Hide's excuses about Kaneki. "Wait, wait...I know!" Hide exclaimed. "Let me help with your ghoul investigation!"
At this, Kinyama and Sanko hesitated/exchange looks(??).
Part 3
Like Kinyama said, the Occult Club do activities outside of campus(??). To Hide, it seems like they lauch an investigation into whether the suspects eat normally(??). Their investigation is not just limited to this, they also go to the 20th ward CCG ghoul inspectors that were on patrol to confirm their details(???).
Ever since the inspectors were killed in the 20th ward, the security seems to be strengthed by a lot, said Kiyama as they trailed behind two officers. Hide said he always thought the people who are into occult stuff are those that lock themselves up in a room, reading books. Sanko nodded, saying of course they study from literature/books, but with field investigation they can also confirm with their own eyes. Hide glanced at her notebook, noting that nearly half the names were crossed out. As long as they witness an eating scene, they will judge(not sure about judging) and cross out the names. Hide asked shouldn't they cross out Kaneki's name as well?
They said they wanted to maintain his status as a suspect until they saw him eating(???). After all, it would be troublesome for the research subjects to lessen(??).
Anyway, it seems like they don't really believe the students on the list are really ghouls.
Although they speak uglily(???), in order to have results in their meeting they might fabricate the information on the ghouls. The people who get involved are piteous, Hide thought.
Kinyama asked if Nagachika would participate in the next line(?) exchange(or meeting?). Hide tilts his head, asking that he can come? Kinyama said everyone is free to participate, and seeing that it is the essence of ghoul reserach(?), please come! Hide said since it is like this, then he will take a look!
Seeing them from afar, he couldn't help but sigh. All he cares about is Sanko's notepad. He wasn't able to make Kaneki's name erased before the next line exchange.
6pm Friday
Sanko informed Hide that the line exchange will be held in a pub downtown, as not just students will be attend. Inside the pud, there are students of varying ages. Although there are many people, there were only five groups, with Kinyama's group last to arrive. It seems they distribute the handouts before publishing/accouning(???).
