Theater sound technology has really come a long way. I remember when the best sound system was 4-track magnetic strips on the film for 3 channels across the front and one surround channel on 35mm film and 5 tracks across the front and 1 surround channel on mag strips on 70mm film. But those had a noticeable tape hiss in the background.

Then, in the 1970s, Dolby came out with 4 track optical tracks on film. The sound was a hell of a lot cleaner. Then we went through progressively better systems up to the more common 7.2 track digital sound in most modern theaters. But Dolby Atmos adds a whole lot more to the sound with a near full 360 degree sound envelope, including speakers all over the ceiling of the auditorium. It is truly AWESOME!!!
