Just making sure - that's really "Asahina", not "Akitsuki"? I can believe it... but if the voters chose the pre-Fuuka version of Suzuka as their favorite character, versus any of the primary or secondary characters of this manga? Ouch. That's what I would call jumping straight into the shark.

Once upon a time there was a pathetic, herbivorous audience proxy (PHAP)

whose childhood friend grew up to be Japan's top idol...

all for his sake, of course.

A beautiful, popular girl whose father is an Olympic medalist crashes into his life

and apparently her "type" is PHAPs who take pictures of her panties

because she instantly falls in love with him and drags him out of his shell.

This love interest's favorite singer is his childhood friend the idol,

who just happens to think of the PHAP and invite him to her concert

right before the love interest invites him to the same concert

after winning the tickets in a lottery.

The love interest drags him into helping her form a band, and they ask their teacher for permission.

(Incidentally, their teacher just happens to have been in a huge band

which is the favorite of the love interest, the idol, and the PHAP.)

She tells them they can earn money for instruments by working in a beach cafe

being run by another member of the huge band...

at the same beach where the idol just happens to be going to shoot a video.

When the idol stops by to visit the PHAP, the love interest walks by right as the idol "trips" into him

and gets jealous until she just happens to overhear the PHAP confiding in a mutual friend.

Soon thereafter the teacher comes to visit along with a third member of the huge band,

and the band members just happen to mention that they were in the band

which is a big surprise because somehow no one recognized any of them before.

(They mention it because they're coincidentally big fans of the love interest's father.

Which comes up when the love interest's athlete stalker mentions it.

He's there because he convinced the teacher to let him tag along to see the love interest

after the teacher just happened to tell him she was there.)

Two band members agree with the stalker that the love interest should drop the band to be an athlete,

which pisses her off so much that she bets her amateur singing can impress a professional band...

and then she does exactly that. Because she's just that good.

It impresses them so much that they give PHAP the bass belonging to their missing band member

who went to chase the band's singer only knowing that she was somewhere in the world.

When PHAP gets home from the beach, the idol just happens to be waiting at his home

because she's been in love with him ever since childhood

and didn't forget him despite not seeing him for several years.

When school starts again the love interest immediately encounters the band's future guitar player at lunch,

who tells her to gtfo but then immediately joins the band when the love interest

just happens to run into her at the band's first practice

(which now includes the love interest's stalker, since he just happened to play drums)

at the studio of the third huge band member, who's the guitar player's brother.

But to be fair, the guitar player just happened to be free after getting kicked out of her band

because she's too antisocial.

 

<"Whew. Okay, that finishes up the storyline through chapter 20.">

<"Excuse me, Seo-sensei? I have the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy publisher on the line. They're saying they want their Infinite Improbability Drive back.">

Thank you for doing me the honor of reading it, and finding it worth commenting on. ;

 

I wasn't sure whether anyone would read it all, but once your comment helped me recognize the pattern and I started digging into it, I just couldn't stop. It was like pulling on a loose thread of clothing expecting it to extend a meter at most, but it just... kept... unraveling. By the time I got to chapter 20, I actually had to give Seo a bit of credit. It's freaking amazing that anyone could sneak in that many ridiculous coincidences without coming across as blatant parody or satire.

 

Not to mention that I'm pretty sure the odds of all the combined coincidences so far are about the same as the odds of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy being nonfiction. (^_~)

A friend told me it was a pretty funny manga. Yeah, up to chapter 36 I was laughing out loud, now I can't stop crying 

 

 

 

I don't know, the feels can be pretty hilarious if you keep the tropes in mind. Certainly isn't on the level where you feel like the basest crap for feeling amused during a tragic moment.

Seo doesn't want a repeat of Suzuka where the angst stretched out for way more chapters than necessary and so you get brain-dead panels in this quite a bit. Then there are the weird romances that shout out to KNIM but also disregard the bits of KNIM that were actually good before the pattern got tired and boring. In short, what you are reading is a mess, but it tries to be one of the more 'fun' explorations of the harsh pop music industry(much like the competitive athletics take in Suzuka and the general domestic issues in KNIM) in the real world so at least you can take notes.
