Lark is hardly whipping his own ass by now so I don't see how it would benefit plot in some/any positive way.

2nd, this "trick" is very common in korean authors works. I don't know why, but they love to torture their characters from time to time much for readers grief and sadness. It is really simple and works wonders, but as any overused element it gets irritating quite a bit.

Still I can't say I don't like this at all. But sometimes it is hard to say if its really "sad" or just "cheap".
