Spoiler

I made little something for people who do not like things to end like this. Here you go.

Spoiler

MAH BOI, this ending is what all fairies in bottles strive for!

Example of how this manga could've worked:  What if Iori was a closeted, unconscious MtF trans type and Sylphie's magic only works on him because of it? That could've both potentially saved this story and present a lot more dramatic possibilities. You'd still have the issue that what she's doing is morally wrong (you shouldn't force this kind of thing on people) but you could have the plot work that out. That'd be interesting.

I agree, that could be very interesting. And while I do not doubt that in this story it works only because it's funny rather than for whatever serious reason, I'd like to see a series with the kind of approach you proposed.

This series, despite being wacky, does show that the male MC is and stays male even through all the gender bender gimmicks and the idea of being permanently female is deeply disturbing to him.

Well, to be fair, I have to say that to me it looked like he was more freaked out by the fact that he kept on getting changed whenever than at becoming a girl in itself. I mean, we do know he was uncomfortable with Sylphie changing him when she did it whenever she wanted, but people tend to be uncomfortable with major changes of any kind forced on them at random, and there are a few times when he is not above going out of his way to have Sylphie change him—and sometimes even for what seems to be frivolous reasons—which is something someone who truly was uncomfortable with being a girl, rather than with the change being forced upon them, would probably not do because they'd value their own comfort over whatever could have been achieved that way.

Also, I did actually talk with someone who was/is trans and that person, before coming out to themselves, was deeply uncomfortable with the prospect of being permanently or even temporarily of the other sex (the one that actually matches their gender), or even not being but just presenting that way, the reason being that they could not let go of the image they'd built for themselves. Which basically translates to “because it would break the status quo”, a reason that may seem worthless if you think about it but really shows how weird people can be about knowing what they want.

While I will not say that “oh, this has to mean that Iori is trans” because even statistics say it is unlikely (1 person in a thousand, I believe it was), I think there actually is the possibility that he may be. Probably isn't in the series proper, because that's a serious thing and the series runs on gags, but if you analyse it then I think we can't say that he couldn't possibly be.

Because while being a common gender bender trope, deciding to remain in the changed form can be rather dismissive of people who actually suffer from gender dysphoria in life. It's this really harmful argument that 'the body overrides the mind'. Didn't help that the MC in Idol Pretender goes from a strong and confident man to an incompetent woman. Like, why couldn't they have stayed competent and strong?

Boku Girl at least goes out of it's way to suggest than the MC might be intersex, possibly even trans, but heavily suppressed by their father's... efforts.

It can be especially aggrevating when it's the romance ending with the childhood friend they never considered as a romantic partner before, often dismissing previous romantic interests because they're the same sex. Like... homosexuality exists and your sexuality is kinda a thing independent from your body y'know?

All in all, it tends to be rude and dismissive of real life LGBT people when written poorly.

I think those are all very solid points. I think though we're discovering gender identity is a lot more fluid than anyone ever thought, especially with non-binary type people out there and such. All I have to say though is that I think most gender-bender fiction involving the protagonist transforming and staying that way is a case where... someone tries the forbidden fruit and finds out they really really like it. Even if they don't admit it to themselves at first. At which point you can make the case they were actually repressed MtF their whole life prior to that point, but you can get lost in the weeds arguing for that.

I guess what I'm saying is -- while I absolutely agree that this sort of fiction can and should be much more sensitive to the struggles of real life transgendered, I do think it's possible to write it in a much more complex or nuanced way than it usually is. I think this sort of story can work if the characters are better written and better expressed than they are here.

Anyways, here's a major takeaway:  very few of these stories are about guys 100% sure of their gender identity becoming girls. It's usually about a wish fulfillment fantasy of the author to be a girl and creating a setup in which they'd have no choice but to enjoy their secret desire. Unfortunately, the way that's set up, the end product appeals to very few people except the author, those who are like the author and those who actually have a fetish for that sort of thing. But I'm of the conviction this genre has way way way more untapped potential than that. And yeah, that should start by actually getting to know trans folk.

Ranma 1/2 ended 20 years ago!  Kampfer has been drug out though.

People tend to get "pissy" when the gender-changed boy/girl decides to REMAIN a girl though. (Personally I like that ending.)  I remember all of the moaning about the ending of titles like "Idol Pretender" or "Sekainohate de Aimashou", or "Boku Girl."

It ends finally. Well there's still an underlying abuse problems with iori still being turned into female by Sylphie anytime.

Which means that Sylphie's "proposed ending" is still possible! >:-)

Based on the context, one that's been going on forever, even when the plot has gone stale. My guess is either Kampfer or Ranma 1/2.

It's over!  I had a lot of fun making this and am glad a lot of people appreciated it.  Thanks to kate for putting out the first 25 chapters and Aureus for publicly posting the full translation.   I hope you guys enjoy the bonus content!  The sequences I took from art posted to the artists pixiv, the clothing stuff was from the back covers of the volumes, the what if series and other content were scanned pages that were ommitted from previous releases.  The chapter guide is something I made for myself a while ago.

Ohh and before someone calls me out on it I am aware the twintail girl classmate does indeed have a name but I was too lazy to change the joke after I discovered it.  I didn't really like the ending arc anyway but the series as a whole I still really enjoy.

Props on the chapter guide; it's handy for a series with nameless chapters. :)

"Magical Trans!" is the gender bender to keep an eye on going forward, I think.

*sigh*

I'm not very satisfied. Now I need to find another gender-bender to read...

Shiori cosplay? Didn't think is series was popular enough for something like that lol

I think it's just the one guy.  The author seemed really amused by it on twitter.

I still want a Magical Girl Sailor Shiori spinoff.

The only complaint I have about the bonus material was that the paper dolls didn't have a Sailor Shiori.

Iori X Sylphy, anyone?

UTTER BLASPHEMY!!!

Unlike a certain similar story about a boy turning into a girl through weird magic :D

I started reading the epilogue thinking i was going to comment on how i was a bit disappointed with how Shuuichi never became a girl, but that one page is enough for me. Cute and very much not in any way, shape, or form, gay.
