Excise shoujo ai genre tag, merge into yuri.

10 May 2013 - 10:19 AM

This won't go anywhere because "mangaupdates is using it" and "it has always been this way" but I have to make this case anyway.

Rationale:

- While Shounen Ai got somewhat accepted as terminology for BL in Japan, Shoujo Ai didn't. It has in fact to this day heavy pedophilic connotations. For a large part of the community it borders on insulting to still be associated with this just because back in the day some people didn't know better.

- Not a single scanlation group is using the term (the three largest group have Yuri in their name in one way or the other). Not a single Japanese publisher is using it (Yuri Hime, Pure Yuri Anthology Hirari, Aya Yuri, Yuri Shoujo etc.). No English language publisher is using it (Seven Seas is explicitly using Yuri). Its use is limited to the anime/manga pigeonholing community and is for the most part completely rejected by the actual fandom and the genre's content creators.

- The distinction is too vague to be useful or even correct most of the time. So it's just a bit gay? How delightfully backwards and offensive. We already have general categories like Smut, Ecchi and Hentai to denote the level of physical intimacy, be it hetero or otherwise. Even in this regard "Shoujo Ai" doesn't serve any practical purpose.
