In Topic: Few Suggestion that might make batoto so much better

29 December 2011 - 04:41 PM

I don't see why posting a suggestion in a thread titled "Few suggestions to make Batoto so much better" is incorrect. If I was the only one experiencing that effect, therefore causing this to be "my own problem" rather than something that affected the site as a whole, then I apologize for posting that in an unrelated thread. I was unaware that it was a personal issue only at the time. Additionally, If you'd prefer me to make a new thread every time something pops into my head I'll do so, but most sites prefer to keep things as condensed as possible when people are talking about similar topics in forums so I stuck to that rule here. If that was an inaccurate assumption I apologize.

None the less, thank you for the reply and the information.

Since I'm not sure where to put this, a general suggestions page seems like a safe bet:

One thing that I've noticed is that mangas are listed as being updated in your follows list when they are updated on the scanlator's site rather than when they are updated on this site. I have no problem with that. After all, the whole purpose of Batoto is to work with the scanlation groups rather than take advantage of their work. For groups that have a short delay period (12-24 hours or the like) it's not a problem, but for the ones that have something like a 7 day delay the update notification gets buried under more recent updates and it becomes very easy to lose track of what has been read and what hasn't. Unfortunately there's really no guaranteed solution to this since no matter what is done about it someone gets annoyed. The best answer I can come up with is to update the follow list twice. Once when a manga updates on the scanlator's site, and again when it updates here. That way the scanlation group gets the traffic to their site from the people who want to read the chapter as early as possible, and the people who don't mind waiting don't lose track of it in the list. After all, I would rather look at the same chapter twice and realize I've already read it than to go to a manga that was updated and realize I have no idea what chapter I left off on.

Nicely done. The only thing I would add to it is the ability to arrange the filtered list by the various components of the mangas' entries (such as rating, last updated, etc).

Not to seem like I'm just beating a dead horse here, but I created an account on this site just reiterate the importance of this particular topic. I know alot of scanlators have been annoyed at Mangafox and what not recently and trying to, indirectly or otherwise, get the readers from that site to this one. Unfortunately I can't agree with that, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that sentiment, for one very important reason: the search filters on MF are, quite frankly, amazing. I use MF solely because they have the most useful, customizable, and simple search engine I've ever been able to find on a manga reader site.

The scanlators have taken alot of time and effort to do what they do and I truly appreciate their work, so I would like to do my part to keep them happy, but until I can find another site that can provide quality search filters I just can't. Whether I switch to another reader site such as this one or the scanlators get too annoyed and just stop scanlating, either way I'll never get to read the mangas. The first way because I won't be able to find the ones I want even if they do get translated, and the second because they won't get translated in the first place. Unfortunately, since I don't know anything about computers beyond how to keep mine running I can't help improve anything on the site aside from providing suggestions. And my grasp of Japanese could probably be outshone by an average elementary schooler I can't really do anything to help with the actual process of scanlation. There isn't much I can do aside form bumping threads like this one to make sure they recieve the attention they deserve.

If, as was said in the post before this, a new search filter is in the works, please see this as nothing more than a simple bump and know that I will be checking regularly so that I can make use of the changes one they are implemented. But if this topic did get pushed to a back burner, I urge you to reconsider. That one change, possibly more than anything else, could drastically increase the number of people who use your site instead of others.
