Well, I think it's not a terrible idea to have one day out of the year dedicated to the contemplation of love. In theory, at least, if not in practice.

Love is very important to the human experience, after all; the emotion most closely related to empathy, which allows us to coexist as a species.

Well, in practice it's of course muckier than that.

...More pragmatically, the actual reason it is a big deal, like all of the most celebrated 'murican holidays (except maybe new years day which is comparatively low-key), it is a holiday oriented around spending money.

An interesting breakdown for the U.S. from one news site (source: https://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/valentines-day-numbers-money-spent-flowers-candy-cards/story?id=45480956 )

Valentine's spending:

4.3 billion in jewelry
2 billion in flowers
1.7 billion in candy
1 billion in greeting cards

And as much again as all that in other spending, coming out at about 18 billion supposedly. I'd assume then that at least a billion is also spent in advertising, so that can't hurt (where public awareness is concerned).

What taste have you most recently tried to aquire?

I tried to aquire a taste for fish with bones in, but it was just too much trouble.

I try to acquire the taste of fun and adventure. It wasn't for me.

Lick test

Interesting. It's usually the mundanities of life that make me strangely nervous and unable to sleep. Fun and adventure tend to have more of a somnolent effect, at least come the end of the day.

Though there are exceptions; that trip up to Mt. Hamilton on a too-small windy road with sheer drops and a lack of railings in a minivan may have given me some long-term trauma.

Salt lick

Aah, the Observatory on Mt. Hamilton, the final resting place of one Mr. Lick. A man I truly can understand.

The reason we have Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton is because Mr. Lick was prevented via zoning boards from plan A, whcih I believe was something along the lines of building himself a large pyramid on the edge of the bay to have himself eventually buried in. Plan B was similarly shot down (I forget exactly what sort of monument plan B was, but you get the idea).

My vague impression is he went before the local governments and said something like, "well, where can I spend my large fortune to build myself a massive monument for my posthumous interment? Give me something to work with here," to which he was told something like, "well, how about an observatory? They're useful." to which he responded along the lines of, "Gah. Fine. So long as I can be buried under it!"

He rests there to this day. I believe some of the tours will in fact take one down to see the coffin, under the dias that the big old telescope is mounted on.
