Indie rock/pop/shwatever, I was being ambiguous

+MBV

+Swans

I fall asleep whenever I listen to Mount Eerie. I only have their Clear Moon album and I've tried reeeaaalllly hard to listen to it all the way through but I can't. Is there a better album I should start out with?

To be honest I'm not too surprised. Try Wind's Poem. It's not really that folky but if you listen and like it you might get into his other albums more easily.

Yeah, had a feeling it would be. They've got a strong following online. I've actually barely ever listened to Swans (only The Seer when it came out), one of my friends has been bugging me to take them seriously and look into their discography for years though.

How'd you like their new album?

Prog rock/metal are cool. Do you like King Crimson or Frank Zappa?

To Be Kind is a very good album, but kind of overrated in my opinion. However, I kept my expectations very low after they released an album as good as The Seer so I'm extremely happy about the album. To Be Kind is hit and miss. The song Just A Little Boy might as well be their best song of all time, but tracks such as Screenshot and Bring The Sun are both rehashed, from The Seer, and uninspired. Especially Bring The Sun which left me hugely disappointed. If you have 2 hours to focus on, I'd say give it a try. But, since you haven't listened to their older albums, which are much more significant, give those a try first. I suggest Soundtracks for the Blind, the album that probably inspired GY!BE the most. As for the Fantano review, I haven't watched it but by simply looking at the rating, I can see that he might have overrated it. Maybe his review will change my point of view and make me enjoy the album more, though.

I'm not going to listen to it until I really get into their later work. Still 2 hours.. if they can keep my focus for that long then I'd believe Fantano's score. You've got a lot of insight on Swans, it'll be cool to talk more about them once I go through their discography. Using this 'muessential' chart

Spoiler
It's funny how the album you suggested is like not even in the chart

Hell yes King Crimson

But it's there. Have you tried looking at the chart correctly? I think chronological order is the best if you want to experience the evolution of Swans, I recommend that the most. However, if you don't like their first albums don't think that you will dislike all Swans. Just skip those that you don't find enjoyable. The /mu/essentials chart is fine, probably better if you want to quickly get into them. The problem is that they don't display the evolution of the band since you don't go chronologically. It is convenient, but not ideal.

This question is very very very hard? :( :(

But if I had to pick my top 5:

  • My Chemical Romance
  • All Time Low
  • Fall Out Boy
  • Sleeping With Sirens
  • Taking Back Sunday

The frst 3 never change, the other two change depend on what I've been listening a lot lately.

My favourite album is actually Hemispheres. Cygnus and La Villa Strangiato are amazing.

2112 is just an iconic album though.

Hemispheres is a really underrated one, I can say that that album is my second favorite. Moving Pictures is also great but it doesn't have that 'complete album' mood so I deduct a few points from the album.
