you are right ... I completely wasted my time posting anything, because there are over 380 replies in the thread you provide a link to ... so obviously nothing effective will ever get done about the "bad ads" in here, because the admins make sure that everyone knows that "they" are not responsible ... "it the fault of those mean ol' ad networks"

well ... there are other sites to get manga from ... and some are not as retarded as batoto for restricting what series can even be hosted in here

... I think you're misunderstanding that thread? The explanation is mostly so people don't assume that these ads are a conscious choice or that they might be welcome here (and thus refrain from reporting getting them). As the opening post there explains, batoto gives ad space to some ad networks. if these networks can't provide any ads for a particular site and/or region, they pass the space to other ad networks. At some point you're bound to encounter an ad network that's either less strict about ads being not annoying or doesn't monitor its ads very well. These ad networks can be blocked and/or ads reported to initial ad providers. For that you need to provide some details mentioned in that thread though, otherwise tracking these ads might be hard and/or impossible (ad regionalisation and stuff - like when I used to read manga frequently, quite often I was getting only blank space instead of ads). If you won't report anything, you'll likely keep seeing these ads here.

If you were to read a fair sample of that thread, you would see that lots of things have been done about 'bad ads' on Batoto--mostly reporting them to the network providing them (policy violation).  In some extreme cases, grumpy has even shut down ads from one or more networks (or even all ads) until the problem was resolved.

I'm not that up on what the current frequency of bad ads (such as networks contaminated by phishing ads or malware delivery ads) at Batoto. In the past, it varied month-to-month. I'd turn my ad-blocker back on when things got bad, and turn it back off when the problems were resolved. Now I'm ad free, after becoming a donator to help support the site.

Re your other comment:

The restrictions on Batoto hosting are in three main areas: (1) respecting the wishes of scan groups that don't allow rehosting; (2) retaining the character of the site so that minors can read without parental filters blocking the site for pornographic content; and (3) respecting properly made requests from copyright holders for takedowns of chapters and/or series to enforce copyright. None of these are "silly" in the sense of arbitrary or irrational. One can disagree about each of them, and particularly the user/moderator judgement calls in enforcing #2. Still the decisions here appear to be made in good faith.  Oh, and also the site won't host direct raw (unmodified) scans of copyright material unless explicit permission is given by the publisher/copyright holder, which is understandably still rare.

If you want to read copies that are illegal even under rather generous interpretations of fair use, there are pirate manga sites that distribute those. There are also various sites specialized in hentai content. Batoto is not one of those.

hmmmm ... the "annoying ads" thread was started back in april of 2014 ... and there have been over 380 replies/complaints to it since ... I guess it must be too much like rocket science to see that as pretty much proving that the site owners do nothing "EFFECTIVE" about controlling the annoying ads ... like stop selling ad space to companies who completely ignore any of the so called agreements or policies that batoto claims to have

I never said the admins or site owners did nothing about the problem ... what I said was that they do nothing EFFECTIVE about the problem

of course die hard supporters/friends of the admins only saw what they wanted to see ... kind of like a typical useless politician

The only "effective" solutions to bad actors in advertising are as follows:
  • Run your site for free and have the site bankrupt you
  • Use only ad networks that curate their ad submissions so heavily they don't make enough money to give to you so the costs greatly outweigh the ad money and the site bankrupts you
So they are doing what they can from their side. The real problem is that there is no end to people who will screw anyone and everyone over for money, and those people keep submitting ads to any ad network they can find.

I realize it is too much like rocket science ... but there IS at least one more option that is available ... and I know of at least one site that did that, and very successfully ran for some 7 years until the site got hacked/trashed by a malicious dickhead ... the ORIGINAL MangaTraders ... not the cheap copy that is using that name now

the original mangatraders asked for donations ... to the tune of $900 each month, and that I saw normally got the full amount

of course the original mangatraders ran multiple servers so even if one was down for a problem, the overall impact on the site was minimal

... another HUGE advantage the original mangatraders had over almost all other manga sites, was the ability to download by chapter, which really does make things faster and easier for most people

... another advantage that the original mangatraders had ... no annoying out of control ads

so please, do not try to impress me by whining ... "but we HAVE to use the big money ad companies or else we cant afford to run the site" ... because one of the best sites there ever was for manga, spent several years proving that wrong

Spoiler

Hey, komugi_aikuchi, as near as I can tell, you started this thread while you were (apparently) mad as hell, and you haven't gotten over it yet.

If you're not happy here, just go elsewhere. Not even one person has yet come to support you, and I really doubt your railing against how the ownership of this site chooses to run it is really impressing anyone.

LOL ... how typical of the "faithful friend/supporter" of an organization ... completely ignore what the "malcontent" says (especially if he keeps proving the loyal party line to be wrong, with logic and examples) ... and attack him personally

you should run for president ... who knows, you might do better than Trump is doing

Spoiler

That's one airtight argument you've got going for you there, huh? Anyone who doesn't agree with you is a mindless drone bent on supporting the status quo, right? That's what you're saying, isn't it?

Impressive logic..........that's right up there with "anybody who doesn't do what we say must want the terrorists to win!!"........bravo, spoken like true, aspiring fascist :)

Listen up, partner, you're not a "malcontent".........again, nobody, not one single person has come to your defense/agreed with you here, i.e. nobody else is having the problem/issues you're saying you're having.......that puts you more in the context of being a troll.

If you're not happy, go elsewhere. I personally read/download manga/content from sites other than batoto every single day. Just quit making such a big deal out of whatever little thing it was that's put that bee in your bonnet.

yeah ... compared to all the people who are evidently too scared to say anything ... (as evidenced by the number of views this thread is getting) ... yeah I guess that does make me a troll

so then I guess it would be waaaaaaaayyy too much to ask oh wise and wonderful contributor ... just why is it so impossible for batoto to ask for contributions, instead of using ad sites like the one that hosts the Honda CR-V ad that blasts out through your speaker

or do you have to just keep making the attacks personal so that you can continue to ignore what I said ... and continue to support the official party line

yeah ... I realize that anyone foolish enough to even try to make a suggestion that might just possibly improve batoto ... must be nothing more than a despicable troll

by the way ... have a nice day :D  ... this will be my final post on this thread ... so you can have the last word

Didn't want to feed you but...

So I assume that as a renowned rocket scientist and politologist it didn't occur to you to look past your ego and take into consideration that other people might not be blind, ignorant idiots?

Like how ~half of that ad report thread you write off as scandalous might be duplicate reports for a few cases of more widespread malvertising or replies to reports (not claiming my estimation is 100% correct tho, gave up counting at some point)? Or how getting these 200 unwanted ads (with a lot of them likely limited to individual countries/regions/users) in 2,5 years for millions/milliards of page views somehow isn't tremendously earth-shattering?

Plus you seem to have missed that, while desired, so far attempts to gradually shift to donations-only funding model have failed and that grumpy considers a hard switch to be too risky/uncertain. You're not discovering america by saying it is an option, but you don't seem to care much about viability of alternatives and also I don't think it's been all roses on mangatraders side either (I remember seeing multiple times more than half of the funding goal missing by the end of the month and there being reliance on single-time money injections from generous/rich individuals).

Also you're clearly not using logic yourself if you compare an online reader (that additionally complies to all these stupid copyright claims/dmcas and limits itself to scanlations by choice and because it's rather susceptible to mafiaa-like entities - which certainly won't win the heart of your average leecher) to like the biggest depository of easily downloadable manga. Both target somewhat different audiences (personally, I never understood the appeal of reading something online once or even multiple times as opposed to getting a hq copy on your hdd to read it whenever/wherever/however you want, especially as despite the saying not all things stay on the internet forever), have/had different focus (read comics online vs download comics; afaik the preview option on mt appeared pretty late and didn't seem very "competitive"), and among other variables it leads us to different levels of incentive to support the site with your wallet.

If you were suggesting donations so you could throw in a few coins yourself instead of having to view ads, then it was already an option until recently (paypal plugin broke last month). If you were hoping for others to support the site with donations so you could view it ad-less without feeling bad for using adblock, then unfortunately there's apparently not enough of such users around to pay for the rest.

Btw., iirc grumpy offered at some point to disable ads for accounts of users who kept being pestered by them - why not ask him about it once you get past your anger at having to report your issues?

fakeedit: They're so scared of saying anything they can't even give a silent "like" to your posts?-? Scared of what exactly? So by now you're calling people disagreeing with you idiots and people supposedly supporting/agreeing with you cowards? And you labelling and offending others is stating the obvious truth for a change?

I think 20-25 of these views are by me. IPB's view counters are very inclusive and happily accept stuff like page refreshes and repeated views by the same user.

Heh...... "making attacks personal", yeah, and that's coming from the person who started off by slinging around things like "retarded" and "rocket science", right? :D

Ah well....... yes indeed, it most certainly is too much to ask "why it is so impossible for batoto to blah/blah/blah", and you know why? Because it's just a stupid, childish thing to do to play the "what if...?" game, or demand that others do things the way you want them to rather than how they want to.

Go elsewhere if you're this unhappy, or, and I can't believe I even need to say this, use a better freaking browser like Chrome that lets you block (at least some of, if you want to be nice about it) the ads.

*heh, ponies ninja'd me while I was making sure I had everything spelled right :D
