[Unbelievably Majestic]

 

Okahame Sunrise

 

Everyday life in the world is much as it always was. People work. People play. The world goes on turning. Nothing special. Or so everyone thinks.

 

In the bustling heart of Okohame certain people are becoming aware of something... More. A strange and mysterious group calling themselves Myriad has begun something of a crime spree. Though the crimes have been mostly victim-less. They have been hacking into personal computers, news sites, even government agencies. They claim to be shining a light on strange new occurrences. Reporting claims of psychics, vanishing people, and other such nonsense that any sensible human would dismiss at first glance. They claim to have seen the future, and that there will be a great change we need to prepare for. They claim there are those out there who wish the people harm and that we should be wary. Regardless of how much or little truth there is behind their claims, Myriad tends to be seen a lot lately. Their symbol scrawled across the city in the graffiti on the walls. Their website on the internet drawing lots of curious viewers. The messages they send out after hacking into the live news shows. Myriad gets around.

 

In fact, the Myriad forums is where you met your current group of... friends isn't quite the right word. Maybe you don't even like each other. But you have a common interest. That interest being, 'All this weird stuff Myriad is talking about.' and so you found your way to their website. Or perhaps you just accidentally found the website and started talking as though you knew what you were doing. Whatever the case, the chat room group you are now part of grew from there.

The impossible is happening.

The sun is rising on a new world.

Okahame is a large sprawling city divided up into three major sections. The easternmost section is called Rise, the center section is known as Noon, and the westernmost section is called Fall. Each section is comprised of smaller districts, each of which have names the locals use, but generally they are referred to simply by number. From one through to five. So, "I'm heading off to Fifth Noon." is a common saying. There is also Outlands, which is the name of all the parts of the city that have sprawled past the boundaries of the original plans. The Outlands pretty much surround the sections on all sides. There have been talks and petitions to try and officially name it something more in keeping with the cities 'sunlight' theme.

Bio: Thomas Poole was a regular guy until recently. Not all that special. He'd started working for a finances company just over a month ago, and was doing an acceptable job there. Outside of work he didn't have all that many hobbies, but he loved indulging in the fantasies Myriad brought to reality. He wasn't so sure if he really believed any of it, but he was willing to get swept up in it and just enjoy it for what it was. Only now he has gotten more 'fantasy' than he wanted. When he, presumably, somehow accidentally killed twelve people and put another in a coma it became much too real. In the days since the incident he has been on the run and trying to hide from the police. After finally gathering up enough courage he got onto the Myriad chatrooms and managed to set up a meeting with Myriad himself, courtesy of Tailor, who has promised to help him.

Bio: Tailor has some sort of connection to Myriad, to the point that he was able to simply fetch Myriad into a chatroom when Dangerzone claimed to be on the highway to... himself. What this connection truly is remains unknown, though Yami claimed it was something to do with a brother. Though as far as Dangerzone is concerned, Yami often says things that are either mis-remembered, didn't actually happen in any way shape or form, or just straight up don't make any sense. So who knows if that piece of info is true or not.

There are three main branches of abilities. Everyone who has been awakened to psychic abilities has a capacity for all three, though they will usually tend towards being more proficient in a certain one. In all but a few special cases, the usage of these powers wears at the brain. It twists priorities. It makes the user selfish and callous, almost child-like in their self-centered view of the world and all the infuriating injustices it throws at you, like not letting you have an ice cream.

 

People whom have activated all three of these powers are known as Reborn. The exists, and has done for pretty much as long and anyone can remember, an underground sub-culture or network, containing people who know of the Reborn. This includes normal people. Reborn. And people called Rarities. Rarities are normal humans who, despite not being a complete Reborn, have in fact somehow been born with One of the powers. Usually this makes Reborn thing less of them or dismiss them as weak. But since they have only one aspect of the powers to focus one, they can become incredibly proficient.

Reach
Reach is the ability to manipulate the world around you. To put it in simple terms, using Reach you can channel and manipulate energy or or objects in the nearby vicinity. It can be used in multiple ways, from the simple telekinesis of moving objects with the mind, to solidifying the pure power of will into solid form. Not that it's without its drawbacks. Reach, like all abilities, will strain you, body and mind to a certain extent. The more power used the more stress. Lifting a car for example will tire one out much more than lifting a bottle of water. The strain it imparts can in some cases even lead to permanent damage of the mind or the body. Especially if someone over-powers and breaks your Reach.

 

Raid
Raid is the ability manipulate the minds of others in various ways. It has the power to read minds, delve through a targets memories, and force a target to see illusions. Subtle touches of Raid can be used to influence and sway people on decisions without them even knowing. With careful advanced use it can excise undesirable memories and even invent new ones to replace it. It is commonly though that with Raid one could even completely control a person, riding them around like a puppet. Though that would require an incredible degree of skill, not to mention sheer power. There are less malicious used for raid though, like the ability to seek out others whom have psychic abilities or to communicate with other Reborn people using telepathy.

Ruin
Ruin is the ability to manipulate and enhance ones own body. It can be used to increase any one of the users senses, or all at once, to supernatural levels. Along side that a powerful user of Raid could increase their reflexes to levels that would put spider-man to shame. Making for a fearsome fighter. It can enhance and strengthen the physical body, increasing the users strength, speed and endurance. In a lot of ways it could simply be considered the ability to make oneself physically super human. When trained and used properly the user can lessen any damage done to them and increase their healing abilities too.

Regal
After a while of training, using, and generally becoming accustomed to their powers, a psychic may develop something new. Something special. A Regal ability. A powerful psychic ability unique to them. These are all different and people who have unlocked this ability are called Regal. Those are the most dangerous, especially if you don't know what their ability is.

 

Power Progression:

All Skills start at Rank 1 when you purchase them. They can be improved to the next rank, making you more proficient, faster, or stronger, in that skill. To improve the Rank of a power you simply purchase it again, but for One point more than it's previous cost. Something that costs 1 point for Rank 1, requires 2 points to upgrade it to a Rank 2. 3 points for Rank 3, etc.

 

Some abilities are in a chain, as you'd expect the earlier skills must be purchased before the later ones. It wouldn't make sense to be able to throw buildings but not a deck of cards.

Rosca's got a problem with staying put and an even bigger problem with staying out of places marked with signs like "Authorized personnel only" or "Trespassers not allowed". It might have been due to over-exposure to the infamous Daria the Explorer show during her more formative childhood years, or perhaps due to the influence of her curious grandfather, who worked as one of the city's urban planners. The man brought her to work with him on days where she skipped school--of course, this was their little secret. On her 14th birthday, he gifted her with a detailed map of the traffic system (complete with how to time the green lights) and a nice, shiny bike. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could teach her how to ride it. She taught herself quickly enough, learning more than a few tricks along the way.

 

It would not be long before she formed an unofficial club within her school, called "The Sunset Anonymous". The small group started out with finding abandoned houses or facilities in the Outlands to hang out in or steal stuff from. Then ever since coming upon the Myriad forum, Rosca and her band of thieves and squatters got it into their heads that urban legends were the next big thing. So far, they haven't seen anything... yet.

 

Rosca also maintains a private, password protected blog called "After Dark" that records the locations and details of their raids.

Bio: Lance, a college student who works part-time at a Library, isn't the type of person you'd think would get involved in the Myriad craze. He's not particularly sociable (though he's no shut-in either) and his lack of drive has been noted by almost all of his professors and peers. It just seems like he's going through the motions by going to college and getting a part-time job. He is a good enough student, no prodigy for sure, but he can think for himself. His hobbies are also fairly mundane, in his free time he can often be found lounging somewhere with his nose in a book, oblivious to his surroundings. If you asked him about Myriad before, he'd probably have brushed off the topic as pointless and irrelevant. When he returned to his apartment after finishing his shift at a local library he found that all of the books in his room had the Myriad symbol scrawled in the top right of at least one page. His apartment was locked the entire time and after inquiring with his neighbors, they hadn't noticed/heard anything strange like his door being opened or any shady characters around. This one event was all it took to light the long-dormant fire of true curiosity in Lance's heart. He dove into the web almost immediately, searching for others who had similar things happen to them in hopes of a lead. The investigation was on, and Lance had found his drive. He wasn't going to let this mystery pass him by. Why him? What was the point of it? Why are they leaving their mark everywhere? Whatever the answer, Lance knew he had to find out.

To better appreciate and situate our subject, it would be optimal to procede by a thorough discussion of his social and physical environment as well as social and physical development as a male adolescent of a non-descript but mostly anglo-american city. Joey Nicolas Smallwood was born on the 29th of July, year 199X, on a sweltering day around supper time. His mother was at home, having eschewed work that day due to physical unease and vague nausea - not to be confused with existential dread. His mother, Carla Smallwood, née Carla McIntyre, was a small, compact woman with enough energy to power half they city, now rotund with her 2nd child. She went into labour around 2:30 pm as she was watching T.V.. She quickly called her husband, Johnathan Smallwood, a tall gangly piece of sinewy meat - an architect of a phlegmatic and kind disposition. He was alarmed by the news and quickly left his studio to fetch his wife. She then called her mother, who was currently taking care of 1 year 8 month's old Martha Smallwood. Having learned of her daughter's situation, she quickly plucked young Martha and her husband and made her way to Carla's residence. By 5 o'clock she was at the hospital, at which point her labour became more intense. At 6:47 Joey was born, healthy and crying loudly. 
The family would go on to add two additional members to the team - Jeremy and Sasha. After Jeremy was born, they decided to buy a bigger house, a bold move for the young couple, and they moved into a suburb called Green Hills in Zone 3. This has been there residence for the last 14 years. A 4 bedroom, 2 washroom (but only one shower), with a finished basement, strategically placed on a bus line. It was a fairly new development on the very edge of the town. A nice home for a young family, but in a rather sparse neighbourhood: the place was empty between 8 am to 5 pm, as it was the home base of functionaries, business people, lawyers, etc. who spent most of their day at the town center. This gave a certain deserted quality to the place, emphasized by the wide open vague fields - wasteland fit only for speculation. Grandma McIntyre helped the young family by babysitting the young children. Joey had a very 80's childhood, in a way. With his siblings, he ventured into the ''wilderness'' that was the empty fields and scraggly forests and marshlands dotting the untouched land surrounding the development. They would roam the asphalt labyrinth for hours on their bike. He was a happy and mischievous child - but one who was primarily comfortable with his family. His siblings were his first, and for a long time, his only friends, as there very few children in their immediate vicinity. School brought a change to that. Joey was initially very excited to go to school - his older sister loved it and he was quite eager to see it for himself. He did not fit in very well. Other children were not like his sibling: he had never went to a kindergarten. He never had to endure the small politics of these little beasts we call children. He did well, though, in grades and classes. He had equal ease in academics and sports. Though he didn't find any niche or any real friends until middle school and high school, perhaps the biggest blow he received, socially speaking, was on the familial level. His sister Martha became cold and evasive toward him, if not abusive and bully-ish. Her blossoming social life and interests made her look upon Joey as a hindrance. As he did not fit in (or stand out for that matter), he was considered a loser by most of the people she frequented - and she came to adopt their point of view. Joey was 13. She was 15 and turning. Their relationship would go on souring for another 3 years. Having lost one of his best friends, Joey's social isolation, coupled with pre-pubescent awkwardness, led him to become more withdrawn and taciturn throughout middle school. He became bitter and hostile toward his sister, and unfortunately, that attitude carried over to his other siblings. In other words he had an angsty teen phase - made only worst by his blooming interest in art and theater. On a more serious not, he felt lost and adrift. In many ways the pillars on which he had built his life so far were being knocked out under him and he was failing to find some way to anchor himself, to latch on to something. 
 
And then he found internet forums.

Joey was no stranger to the internet and it's many glittering images and wonders, but his parents, vaguely technophobe, despite their own drug - television, had always placed strict limits on the amount of time him and his siblings could play video games or watch tv, or use the internet. Nevertheless, people at school used it - and he heard of the amazing things that could be done on it. His first forays were video games, and then manga and anime scanlation - of which he then joined a forum. Through that forum and his involvement there for a few years, he became acquainted with something bigger.

This was a whole new world. A board where all the scum (but interesting scum - like a really mesmerizing mold on your piece of bread) of the internet seemed to gather and fester and revel in the anonymity cyberspace conferred them. At first his involvement was limited to lurking. Then he posted. Then he posted more. He got into arguments. He posted funny captions. He got actually good at photoshop. Before he realized it he chatted with a small, but fairly regular, if disparate, group of people on a daily or weekly basis. Friends. Not that he didn't have friends in school. He was in the drama club and he played the trumpet in band, but he couldn't talk to those friends of the things that fascinated him. 
 
Like the Myriads, for instance. 
 
Now Joey was never big on conspiracy theories. He is somewhat of a coward and ideas like aliens, secret government agencies, demons and other things that go bump in an tin-foiled mind freak him out. Creepypastas - more like no pastaroni for me. But these Myriads - they were the real deal. And he loved them. Because in a way these people were making life just a bit more exciting. 
 
And Joey Smallwood was a bored teenager. He didn't find any pleasure or gratification in the little social games of his peers, or in high academic grades, or in the prospect of entering the job market in this competitive economy. He mostly wished that life wasn't so boring. He yearned for something a bit more romantic, a bit more... well, comic-book-y. Video-gamey. Like in a movie or a book. He wandered the streets of his youth, aimless, the whole place now seemed oppressive and alienating.

He also loves to indulge in dubious poetry. Oh the ravages of youth. 
 
Joey sighed as he looked at his watch. He would have to go home. He had homework to do, but let's be real he was probably going to go waste his time online instead of doing trigonometry. 
 
If only life was more... exciting. He let himself be carried away by daydreams as he walked past the rows and rows of the same four basic house models.

The solemn age of 33 a time of patient retrospection and hopefully an end to the search for stability. Well that’s what most folks would like to believe, but Gregory knows the truth about middle age, he’s known it all along.  It’s the place young men go to die, and god help the man who’s on the other side.

 

All though he knew this truth Gregory had the sad misfortune of being rather ambitious when it came to his career, and boy was he good.  Given that he is enjoying this particular autobiographical monologue in plush sofa which in turn in situated in a rather luxurious condo. Yes, Gregory has done quite well by himself. If only that was the end of it.

 

Unfortunately everything comes with a cost, even success. For Gregory the price came in the form of women, he has never had any good relationships with them outside of professional ones of course.  It wasn’t even for the lack of trying… All his ‘friends’ would leave, not before dropping an adjective or two. Some choice words include “Asshole”, “Depressed nihilistic bastard” and even “ A Boring Turd”. Now Gregory don’t frown. It’s best to be positive. Bio:

A senior at the Private High School in 1st Fall,  she or "he", listing herself as male, is the Myriad forums resident troll. While normally acting as a well-mannered individual and proper member of society in the public's eye (for the sake of her family, much to her chagrin), at home she is anything but well-mannered, far from it in fact. Shedding her usual calm and collected nice honor student act, she is a foul mouthed tom boy who is far from feminine (a huge contrast to how she is at school).

 

Despite her reluctance at having to put up such an act, due to the fact her father (Simon O'Connell) is on the school's board of directors (as one of the schools backers) and a prominent city official, she doesn't exactly have a say in the manner. The allowance she gets (for behaving in public) doesn't hurt either. However, her fathers pleas to act like that at home falls on deaf ears.

 

To let off steam from her rather boring everyday life, she goes online, adopting the alias of 'Quail-Man' and begins her day by pissing off others. From intentionally derailing serious conversations, posting spoilers of peoples favorite shows, movies, books, etc (along with fake spoilers, those are fun too), to insulting ones waifu, spamming threads with memes and gifs and posting misleading or inappropiate re-directing links, everything is fair game. Just when things were getting dull and the Myriad craze kicked into overdrive and soon found herself on the forums and more over-serious people to target. She's also an avid gamer.

 

She also has a younger sister in middle school (Sara) who she dotes on.
