7) What is the difference between a Japanese Web Novel and a Light Novel?

 

The simple difference is that a Web Novel is essentially a first/rough draft of a Light Novel.

 

Web Novels are posted online by the authors while Light Novels are published by real publishing companies. Web Novels do not have illustrations typically while Light Novel projects are given an artist to do illustrations. A Web Novel does not go through any sort of required editing process while a Light Novel has to go through an editor as part of the publisher to raise the level of quality of the story. This editing process will make a shiny rock into a diamond.

 

When a Web Novel goes through the process of becoming a Light Novel, it also rarely stays the same as the author is now given the opportunity to change situations, expand on story-lines, and improve the series as a whole. An analogy is playing through a game. The Web Novel would be the first playthrough where mistakes are made and you die a few times. The Light Novel would be the second run where you know the ins and outs and can make the best decisions on how to reach the best ending. Thus, one cannot expect the Light Novel to just be the same content as the Web Novel.

Well since I love sleeping only posted a direct link to Henouji's wordpress that's also smack in the middle of the page in my link (meh), I'd like to help elaborate that Henouji is translating from the web novel version of this light novel so there are no fist fights to be fought around here. As a warning and a bit of a vague spoiler, some events in the web novel are moved to a later time in the light novel, and there are some other changes between the web novel and light novel. I believe this manga is also based on the light novel too (this I am only 95% sure of)!

 

ps. Henouji has expressed interest in joining us in translating the manga, so this may or may not mean a faster release of chapter 2-3

as of now, he has 49 chapters compiled from everywhere and done on his own as well. One of the nice people that puts it all in one place for us.

Usually changes are for publication; Grammar cleaning, adding more details that originally didn't exist. In SlimeTensei's case, it was pretty complete (and well-written web draft), so there are not known huge changes; it's mostly detailing and polishing. Also, for publication, author added more stories at the end as a bonus. That's about the biggest important parts.

If you can support the author, I highly recommend it. Author is planning to write spin-offs, since he said "Rimuru's story is complete".

the "Founding the Demon Capital Arc" is hugely expanded in the LN version, as he added the character. On Thank You note at the end of the book, he comments that while generally editors ask for books to be edited 'down", for his case, he adds so much that his editor gave up making that request.

...And that arc thus ended up as 2 books.

Also, due to the universe expansion, with new characters, LN officially has newer arc that has not yet been introduced in the web version. The latest, Volume 10 is such volume, from what I hear.

Just found out the light novel get's an official english translation. It will be released from Yen On and the first volume comes out in december <3 <3

I've never bought a Light Novel before. This will chance now here...Ditto if they decide to translate Tsuyokute New Saga and Konjiki no Wordmaster as well. God I hope those get anime adaptions at some point as does this one. These just sort of NAIL that videogame RPG Isekai vibe so much better than other's do.
