I will survive, I always do, it is my curse and my blessing . Like many of the Rani I was born outside the cities and spent most of my time outside. You could say I had a rather eventfull childhood, my tribe believed strongly in hard parenting, Infact most of us were kept at a arms distance from our parents. All the children were rounded up and put under one large tent, too ensure that a sense of brotherhood developed amongst us and all that but primarily to keep us out of the adults’ way. We were minded by the older kids and the instructors, those too old to be running about with the rest of em.
You see our tribe, the Stone Crows, were in many ways a large mercenary group, moving from one job to another, always moving to next battle. Like crows to carrion we were drawn to wars, and we were good at it. You know the stories about those crazy strong Rani warriors, well let me tell you they are every bit true and then some.
We’re taught how to fight from the moment we can walk, and from then on that is the primary focus of our lives. We were taught how to use anything that could help us out in a fight, swords, flintlocks, thaumaturgy, a little bit of everything. By the time we entered our teens we had a good and rather varied basis over what to specialize in. Anyhow apart from all this training there was one other small problem, you see the tribe believed in a no holds type of training, survival of the fittest and all that. The ones who were better at fighting were always treated better, their own tents, much better food, to name a few of their privileges. Nonetheless we were pushed hard and fast, the weakest of didn't make it.
As for me, well by the time I reached my mid teens I had crushed over two thirds of the kids that I had the pleasure to grow up with, the rest would be dealt with by the time I finally became an adult. However by that time I had already had already wet my appetite for violence on over seven small scale wars. As an adult I had the opportunity to take up jobs on my own no need to work in tiresome teams. Most of the jobs I took from then on would be bounty hunts, taking down some fool or some deranged beastie, course some of them were rather strong, just that I was stronger. One day I came upon a guard job for some doctor, needed general protection and all that, from bandits and the like became ever more brutal and populous as the Ash Scourge ravaged the countryside.
I still wonder why I even took it, probably as a vacation, protection jobs are usually the easiest, and this one paid quite a bit. When I finally met the client, I found this gangly fellow a few years younger than me, already an accomplished doctor, a genius apparently. He was out in the country trying to find a cure for the Ash. Ill keep it short, I’m not one for long romantic stories so I’ll bear you the pain as well. I fell in love, didn't know I had it in me Heh. He was my opposite anyways, where I was tough as nails he was a pampered lordling, where I had a pragmatic cruelty, he had empathy. However like many things the Ash Scourge took him from me. I was infected as well, I am infected, heartbroken, and pissed off. But that ain't enough to kill me, and what don’t kill me can only make me stornger.
