The story of Poe:
Poe was a good looking potato. All the potatoes in her sack praised her for being the potato with the most beautifully shaped eyes, thickest skin, and the brownest body. All the potatoes - except one. His name was Tay, and he was new to the sack; she didn’t know him well. Sometimes Tay would tease her for being a ‘farm potato,’ as he called it. He said that he came from the city, full of ‘humans.’ Poe couldn’t tell if he was teasing her as usual. The only potato Tay really got along with was Poe’s childhood friend, Toe. He came from the same field that Poe had. And, surprise surprise, he was never teased for it! She thought angrily. Currently, Poe was sitting at the edge of the potato sack. She liked seeing the dark, grey, rumbling world that was outside of the potato bag. Her parents had once told her never to go out there, but, when she was little, they had abandoned her, and left the bag themselves. What hypocrites. She sighed to herself. One day, I want go and see the world my parents thought was more important than me… A rustling noise startled her from her thoughts; she saw Tay and Toe hopping towards her, arguing more intensely then she’d ever seen before. They didn’t seem to notice her. “You can’t possibly mean that you too…?” “I can’t believe it! You haven’t even known her that long!” “Please believe me; I would never get in the way if I wasn’t serious.” “Wow, this is the first woman I’ve seen you take the slightest interest in…” “I know, but there’s just something about her.” Poe couldn't believe her potato ears. Tay and Toe are in love with the same girl? That chick doesn't know how lucky she is! Poe smiled mischievously and coughed ceremoniously. Tay and Toe hopped in surprised. “P-Poe…” Toe said, his soft yellow skin growing a pinkish colour. “How much did you hear?” Tay demanded, his rough red skin concealing any blush he might be making. “Everything!” Poe exclaimed, relishing their looks of horrified embarrassment, “don’t worry, 'big-sis' will help you with your lady-love!” Tay and Toe exchanged looks. “Now spill the spuds! Who’s the lucky potato?” Toe stared at the ground, uncertain what to say. Tay, on the other hand, steeled himself, took a deep breath and said calmly, “It was you, Poe.” Toe blushed even more, “Uhm, yeah, he’s right Poe. We were talking about you.” Poe’s poor brain short circuited. Time froze as she sat there thinking. They both…? Toe’s never said anything, I wonder when he started to… And I barely even know Tay! And, and, and… what the hell is happening? The potato’s world changed in an instant. The rhythmic rumbling stopped, and the soft darkness was penetrated by blinding light. The potato bag was lifted off the ground, and flung unceremoniously onto something hard. Cries of pain and suffering could be heard as dozens of potatoes tumbled and smashed against each other, Poe, Tay and Toe themselves were hurled from the neck of the potato sack and landed among their suffering friends. As everyone tried to move around, get comfortable, and tend to the wounded, Poe went to the entrance of the sack and looked out. The world she once knew was gone. Instead, monoliths of plastic and steel raised their faces to the sky, in defiance of the potato Gods. It was terrifying, and yet, so beautiful. Poe was filled with all sorts of feelings and thoughts she couldn't make sense of, so she cried. She cried for the life she once knew, the parents who abandoned her, and the heart she was going to have to break. Poe woke from here exhausted sleep by a horrible sound. Screams filled the air. A horrible, fleshy, five pronged potato was pulling a Purple Majesty mother from the arms of her husband. Too terrified to do anything, Poe watched as the mother was dragged away right beside her. “The humans!” Toe cried, “It’s just like Tay said!” “What do we do?” Poe whispered. She was deep in thought. “There… isn’t anything we can do.” Tay’s face looked like he had already accepted his fate. “My parents were taken by the humans.” “They’re going to take another one tomorrow, right?” Poe’s voice was steady and clear; she’d made a decision. Tay nodded. “Every morning.” “Then I will go.” Poe was resolute. There was a chorus of surprised exclamations and arguments, but Toe cut through them, “If you’ve made up your mind, I’m going with you.” Tay, for once, was speechless. Poe turned towards him, “the only way to find out what the humans are doing is to face this mystery straight on.” “I’ve been too scared to face my fears for so long…” Tay smiled, “fine, I’ll go because you’re pretty hopeless without me.” It’s time I find out what really happened to my parents. Tay thought with determination. Poe was silent for a moment. Both these Potatoes are willing to follow me into uncertain death… Once again Poe thought of the one heart she’d have to break, and felt a horrible pain in her stomach. The three potatoes sat outside the sack they had grown up in. The sack the felt like home, and all three had grown to love. The sack they knew they’d never see again. Tay was the one to break the silence. “I know why I’m here. I know why Toe’s here… but, Poe, why are you doing this? Why’s princess of the potato patch doing something to help others?” Poe grinned, “I’m sorry you don’t find my actions as romantic as trying to protect your true love.” Tay was immediately silent from her rebuttal; his red skin really did seem to get a little redder. Tay’s a lot easier to be with, once you know how to deal with him. Toe, who’d been silent until now, spoke up. “You’re doing this because of your parents, right?” Poe mulled that over for a bit. Is that really why I’m here...? “Yeah. I am.” “Parents…?” Tay said eyes wide. “They left me when I was little. After what you said about your family, I put two and two together - they were probably taken by the humans just like yours were. But the thing is, I’m not doing this to prove anything, I just want to know, for my own sake, what really happened, and why they had to leave.” A distant rumbling filled the air when the potatoes finished their talk. It grew steadily louder, until a flash of light filled the unfamiliar landscape. The potatoes stood resolute on the outside, but inside each and every one quivered with unspoken fear. Buzzing and beeping of strange devices filled the air for the next few minutes, but then the human turned towards them. Poe offered her shaking hands to the other two. Wordlessly, they stood; holding each other firmly and praying to whatever Gods in the potato pantheon would hear them. The human picked up Toe, but the other two clung fiercely to each other’s body – all three of them were up in the air, staring wide eyed at the floor which seemed so far beneath them. One by one, they were dunked and scrubbed in hot water, until, gasping for air, a shining bright knife was lifted before their eyes. The human paused for a moment, “Dear,” it said, with a voice so loud Poe had to block her ears in pain, “how much hash browns do you want?” “I didn’t have dinner last night, so I’m feeling quite puckish!” A far off voice called. The knife slid into the unsuspecting potatoes, ending their life as suddenly as it had begun.
What is this I don't even.
