^ Hahah, I knew about the Manse part being a greeting to the King (it's in every Chinese TV series set in ancient China), but I didn't know about the rest about the Koreans. Thanks for that. xD

 

For those curious, subjects greeted the Emperor with "10,000 years", and the Empress with "1,000 years." It was, as I said, to wish them a long life. 

That distinction in every Chinese period drama/movie I saw was very interesting! Gotta make sure the emperor gets the best! >.<;;

 

I think the modern usage of the word in the Korean language doesn't necessarily have to be tied to its roots, aka, wishing someone a long life. It's used more like "Hurray!" rather than its literal meaning of the Chinese characters... I think.  

(Hmmm... I guess my perception is not quite aligned with what the English wikipedia thinks on this occasion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_thousand_years#Korea , but the Korean wiki agrees with me: http://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/%EB%A7%8C%EC%84%B8 )

 

I believe in Korean period dramas, they use the phrase "만수무강 하시옵소서" (Googled the Chinese characters for the first part: 萬壽無疆 ), among other things, to wish long life to the King.

Getting back on subject, I'm more and more amazed by what you can do with machine translation. It truly is a tool that depends on the prowess of the user? Or that a great artist/technician can do great things with the most mundane/bad tools? >.<

^ It's not really just the machines, I'm often looking up the definitions of individual words (I type the word, or what looks like the root, into Google along with "definition" or "korean"), as well as the grammar usages of individual particles (those I haven't learned already, I mean). That's why it's taking me so long. D: It's quite tedious when apart from 3 machine translations, you're looking at up to three more links to see what a word means and how it could be used.

 

Fortunately, I don't have to do that with Every word, but it still makes a huge difference. I'm actually disappointed that even with that, I'm still unable to look things up with 100% accuracy. Some uses (maybe slang?) don't seem properly documented at all.

 

Verb tenses are the worst. Especially since Korean has irregular verbs. I often have no idea which part is the root.

 

Sometimes I'm also looking up synonyms of English words, because the Google choice sounds bad. >_>

Leez repeated every one of Asha's insults. >_>;; If the old translations had expressed that correctly, it would have been the first hint of Leez' ability to memorize everything word for word. It's somewhat impressive. The Company should be releasing its own version soon. From what I've seen so far, there are inferences that could be quite interesting.

Yup, Kubera is really good at hiding hints only catchable later.

For some reason my com won't let me copy what I did for Chap 6. Might try tomorrow.

I was wondering if there was a future tense here! I find this sentence interesting because Anna describes Asha as a friend to stay with Leez here.

Thanks! Hmm, the reason I tried to use "whine" here is because the Company translated "어리광을 부리려면" as "If you want someone to whine to", and the "어린애는" seems to refer to that. We'll see how The Company handles that.

원래 뜻은 그러하지만, Sura의 힘때문에 많은 것을 잃은 인간들은
신의 편에 설 것을 맹세하면서 Sura와의 연결고리를 끊어버렸고,
결국 마법사는 그냥 '신의 힘을 쓰는 사람들'이 되었다.
Such was the original meaning. However, since humans lost much because of the power of Sura,
(nicer sounding alternative: 'as humans suffered great losses due to the power of Sura'?)
They vowed to side with the Gods, and severed their links to the Sura,
In the end, magicians simply became 'people who use the power of Gods.'

Mizi: I agree with you that "Long Live the Priestess!" makes a better translation. Even without the connotation of its historical etymology, it gives better context of why people are cheering Birlith.

Whoo, this chapter is finally done! That took a while, how did I "translate" all those novel chapters anyway? O_o;;

 

So anyway, it seems that the Garuda clan just change the light of the sky, they don't necessarily turn it red. That makes sense. The color probably depends on the sura.

 

Oh by the way, I've been wondering about the sentence "적어도, 짐만 되는 어린애는 아니라는 거 인정해줬으면 좋겠어."

Maybe both "child" and "whine" could be used here together. That would tie the sentence to the previous one used by Asha, the one about her whining.

So: "At the very least, I want you to acknowledge that I am not a whining kid who is nothing but a burden."

Huh. In this version, having read future chapters already, you can tell that Agni's already planning to go confront Yama immediately. Since the time in Hell moves so much faster, I guess for him it was like being gone for a few hours or something.

 

There's a few awkward phrases, but I can only give my opinion on that as someone who speaks english and not korean, so I don't know how helpful that'd be.
