Coast redwoods seem to require ocean mist/light rain to get them through California/Oregon summers. Giant sequoias, on the other hand, can handle summer drought if there's water in the deeper soil/rock crevices. They also do OK with deep winter snows. Iirc correctly the main problem they have growing in the eastern U.S. is fungal diseases. That's probably why more people plant (deciduous) Dawn redwoods from China.
