Damn. I knew about the Elephant Man, but I'd never heard of that detail before.
Somehow makes this story even more poignant.

According to wikipedia, Joseph Merrick was said to have died by attempting to sleep lying down, which resulted in a dislocated neck. His neck was too heavy for him to lay down without the risk of breaking his neck in his sleep.
Well, that was nice and twisted.
