I'm not really sure what to say, but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed this story. I liked the unique premise.
The guy on the left is not the same as the one on the right. His dad had a normal face.

I think the MC wanted to look manlier, not no how to fight. And honestly swimming is probably the best sport if you wanted to build muscles quickly. It works like everthing

So his dad wanted him to get more manly by taking . . . swimming? More relevant might be some Jiu Jitsu or something. One of the martial arts with some grappling and locks, so next time one of those goon dipsticks grabs him he can twist their joints into strange painful positions until they're feeling a bit more reasonable.

Shonen being a demographic accepts various genres including gore or "raunchy". The definition of shonen is not harem and comedy. In short, it can have blood and drama and still be a shonen.

Bessatsu Shonen is not really a shonen magazine, it's flagship titles are a little too gory/raunchy for that (Snk/AnH).
