About Me

Interstitial. Accidental bad influence. Somewhere between taciturn and terse. I'm too damn old, and too damn busy, to be doing this. I must be insane.

Minor rambling here, putting under spoiler to avoid wall o' text. (This is a copy of a post I made on the Tsugumomo page.)

    [spoiler]
The subject of deleting chapters when Facepalm puts up higher-quality chapters got me thinking, and since I was already typing, things kept coming out of my keyboard.

Speaking for myself, I like having more than one translation for a series; I get a more rounded view from what different translators/proofreaders interpret the original Japanese to mean in English. When I'm reading a title here, a group's chapters generally continue seamlessly, skipping over other groups' chapters, until the group's chapters run out. This can make for a bit of a lurch in style at times, but maintains some continuity.

And I really like having scanlations to compare when the "official" translations are published; they often have a completely different flavor, and make me want to learn Japanese so I can read the originals myself. I've been buying from amazon.co.jp, yesasia.com, and licensed translations from amazon and powells.com. So far, I can only appreciate the artwork in my imports, and I've been... puzzled at some of the choices in the licensed titles, having read scanlations previously.

On another tack: Deleted series. I get Batoto deleting series, or not allowing series to be uploaded, but that doesn't mean I like it. DMCA is unavoidable, but really gets my goat when there's no "official" translation available, especially for titles that are no longer in print. Content restrictions are understandable, since the site doesn't have any restrictions on viewing beyond the "Mature Audiences"-type warning label.

What grinds my gears a bit is taking down a title after it's been up for quite a while, and not leaving any way to find out the group that did the original posting. When groups from other countries are allowed to continue posting, it's doubly irritating.

I have a few other sites that I go to when I can't find things here, but I prefer to try the group site first (when possible). One thing I appreciate about Batoto is its links to group sites, which minimizes the annoyance of not being able to download from Batoto, so when those links vanish, it seems a bit of a dick move. When I find a title without chapters that I know is available, I sometimes post a link to the group, or to another site that still has it online if the group isn't accessible for whatever reason.

    End of rant. I think.

tl;dr Deleting things rubs me the wrong way.
