I started reading, but the
I know people who've been seriously hurt by such gags so it sours my enjoyment of any series :/

I wouldn't say that it got dark--Just apocalyptic. Whether it's dark or not hinges on what happens next.
Definitely for a younger audience. And it has a vibe that feels kind of old school, like 50s comedy--it's like, all the stuff that it gradually occurred to us "Good god that's insensitive" is still cool in China, and everything's kind of simple and exaggerated.
Sort of fun, but not as fun as other things I might be reading instead.
