The Maus effect.
In Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics", he postulates that the more "cartoony" and less detailed a character's features are, the more easily the reader can identify with that character. This holds up pretty well in my experience.
Is there an English translation of this?
This is a realistic look at the Japanese mindset of the "warrior" class that drove actions during WW-II (also see the movie "Letters from Iwo Jima").
The art also makes an interesting statement. The rendition of the backgrounds and dead people is quite realistic/detailed, that of the faces of living people is almost "cartoonie".
