I read both and Sword Oratoria is a side story which means it happens at the same time as the original series, in other words It can't be a alternative setting since it doesn't change the plot nor any of the events that happens in the original, the same can be said about the 4-koma, happens at the same time but doesn't change the plot.

Maybe he's thinking of Sword Oratoria and Yuutousei, respectively? Although Sword Oratoria is more of a spin-off of DanMachi focusing on Ainz, while Yuutousei is just a spin-off of Mahouka that focuses more on Miyuki. They're both spin-offs, which are different from what they were talking about.
