"Whoa" is a sufficient enough reaction. But me like this one-shot greatly.

edit: years later and I still love this. It's one of my all-time favourites.

Folks who didn't quite understand this, here's how I got it (SPOILERS EVERYWHERE):

Kougi's mum died ten years ago while saving the child-him from drowning. He's been in a state of denial and guilt since then about her death, especially because her body was never found. That was probably the reason for his isolation and fish dreams, and finally, Nene's rejection drives him to jump into the water and drown (from the way I see it). He was saved but in a coma for a year, in which he saw the "dream" where he was truly a fish. He could have chosen to stay as such (i.e. never waking up and dying), but he chose to "be human instead of a fish" because he loves Nene. Thus, he wakes up, finally accepts that his mother is truly dead (body being found = resolution) and decides to live on.

I suppose that the ethereal dream he had while in the coma which was not quite a dream (he saw a changed Nene in it, she was with her colleagues after a long period of grieving) was the author's play on the novel she based this story off of. It could very well be that he truly was a fish in that transient period of his coma, ever searching for his lost mother in the depths of the sea. We'll never know, and that's the great part about this. The part where Nene chops up the fish might signify Kougi's coming back to the real world (i.e. the death of the fish) by her hands since she was his one anchor to reality. If we look at it the other way, it could be that since the fish he was died, his soul returned to his body, or something.That part was a little disturbing, honestly.

Anyway, this is my take on it.
