love this series
Probably not only that. There is a very strong sense of duty in Japan and people who devote themselves to work are really highly regarded. It's the case of the author of Kochikame, which ended after 40 years of serialization and was portraited as a symbol of national pride. I think that probably the main reason Go Nagai still works is because he has that much sense of duty himself, specially old people are still like that.
Mao Dante has a remake because the original manga got cut short due to the magazine going under (Kodansha's Bokura). It was left with no ending, which is why he decided to remake it, at least this time with an ending.
Go Nagai has contributed to 300+ titles, directly or indirectly by association to Action, Sci-fi, Comedy, Shounen, Seinen, Mecha, Supernatural, Ecchi, Horror, Mature, Drama, Fantasy, Adult, Adventure, School Life, Historical, Tragedy, Romance, Psychological, Gender Bender, Sports, Mystery, Shoujo, Harem, Martial Arts, Slice of Life, Yuri, Josei, Smut.
Popular authors these days just work on a handful of series till their end of days, but not Nagai.
At some point, the dude just exhausted himself on his own ideas. He's 72, and still working on two manga. It doesn't look like he plans on retiring anytime soon. I get there's a financial incentive to every project out there especially to support his manga studio, but Nagai himself is rich enough that he can afford to retire, and yet he refuses to.
Does it count as "Neo" when he's literally the first demon that goes all godzilla and stuff?
To be fair the original Maou Dante was kind of cut short to 2 volumes and then Nagai started focusing on Devilman as his magnus opus more or less and when he was bored/screwing around wrote Mazinger Z. This was made around right after Devilman Lady and both are kind of end notes on former works. They also both got animated series subsequently.
If I recall correctly the original Maou Dante was made before Devilman. This actually seems to be a prequel to the original Maou Dante which Nagai ended in 1971 on a cliffhanger with an identical ending to Devilman. Its focusing on the backstory which I think only got like 3 chapters in the original if that. Go Nagai loves the Divine Comedy clearly. He did a more faithful adaptation in 1994. I get the feeling he saw how popular the Maou Dante references in Devilman Lady were, so he decided to finish that story.
Because they have a large market for the stuff they do, which -- if we're being totally honest -- is basically magazine-safe softcore porn with a hint of sadism in it. Lots of rape and murder, and characters who always end up at least half-naked who are either improbably busty women or men who are supposed to somehow part animal or demon. Like it or not, enough people are willing to pay money to read that sort of thing that someone like Nagai could go for a decade without having a new idea while still churning out the pages and making money.
Simple. For the bottom line on their annual financial reports.
I wonder why Hollywood also does that. We already have three Spider-Man series/characters, two Robocops, three Planet of the Apes, three Batman characters/series, two Supermen, 2 Enterprise crews, two teams of X-Men, and a new (and big budget) Power Rangers movie coming out.
