Pretty sad...

Bu7t I really don't see why you get the impression that the author does not approve same gender relationship. The setting is historical. The author is only using the setting to place the most probable ending considering the time of the story. It would've been either that of she could've been forced to marry a man.
Hellion Twins~

The older shoujo-ai I have happened to read often do not have happy endings. It may have to do with Japanese attitdudes toward same-sex love. The attitudes may be changing somewhat. But it seems to me that homosexual love may be/have been considered a phase at best, something problematic if the phase does not end. People are expected to adhere to traditional gender roles, get married, have a family. This is ideal and "normal".

Newer manga and maybe fiction in general has been showing more hope for these situations, end on happier notes.

I'm not sure how Riyoko Ikeda really feels about same-gender relationships. Even if she approves, she may have found the reality of them problematic in her society, observed how in others they have been, too. She seems to like writing tragedy, and this is a good topic for it.
This is a sad tragic and beautiful story.
The saddest thing is you can get the impression that the author does not approve of same gender relationships with how every relationship Claudine goes through ends.
