The only upside to this series getting cancelled is that I get to pretend the little sister is more or less not a complete monster the likes of which puts all the other girls to shame. Given a little more time, we surely would have learned the terrible truth...

went in knowing that this was dropped by the author. Was good while it lasted. Oh well~

The problem is that there is no chapter after 15, chapter 15 is the last one the author released in the comic website. Looks like the author gave up on this series.

Finally, I understand that many of you are confused. The series in general is quite vague, on purpose. Only… the phrasing and jumps in time make it even harder to follow. There are, however, lots of subtle hints dropped that we can try to use in our understanding of the story. I think it gets particularly hard to follow at around chapter 11, so I’ve written out some summaries to help make sense of it all. This was intended mainly just for me to sort out my thoughts, but I might as well post it here. Note, this is my personal interpretation of things…but I’m open to conversation about it. Spoilers/speculation below:

 

Chapter 11

At the beginning of chapter 11, it is still New Year’s holiday and Shinya is awakened by a message on his phone. Note how his message sound is a recording of Mei. Not sure if he set it, or she did. Anyway, he heads to a “Hasumi Mental Clinic.” Keep in mind that at this point, we are in present time. We have no idea about the woman he is talking to or her name, but can assume it’s his psychiatrist (he denies being a patient, but that can be just what he thinks) and she has contacted Shinya to check up on him. We are also introduced to Clarissa, who does not speak, which may have something to do with the scar at her throat. However, the doctor mentions that Clarissa’s been eager to meet/converse with Shinya, so maybe she’s just not talkative at the moment, or in general. We also see, as she’s placing down the cup of tea, many scars on her left wrist. It’s implied that Clarissa cuts/used to cut herself, and may have self-inflicted what’s now a scar at her throat. The doctor checks up on Shinya, and asks about his “late night roaming” habits, which we’ve actually seen in previous chapters. She also brings up recent talk about the serial killer that’s been loose lately, perhaps he’s seen the killer on one of his walks (or even better, is the serial killer or at least involved), and finally asks Shinya if he knows of a person named “Kitsune.” The scene changes, and time has passed. We see Satsuki playing with two cats near some buildings.

Chapter 12

Chapter 12’s cover page shows Clarissa holding a blade, so the idea that she cuts or used to cut herself is further enforced. Satsuki and Shinya bump into each other and he asks if “that” – the landlord – is home, as he plans to have a “conversation” with him/her. The scene at the clinic is now shown as a flashback, and we continue where we left off. The doctor asks to confirm if Shinya likes “shiny things” and Shinya wonders how she’s learned that. He then realizes how and mentions how “she” sure likes to talk (no idea who). We know this is true as we’ve seen Shinya get his hands on numerous knives and even a gun in the previous chapters. The doctor says it’s nothing unusual to be interested in and brings up how she used to love something too – a sword, and it’s the only thing ever worthy of being called her most valuable treasure. Unfortunately, it was “stolen” (not sure if quotes mean anything here) years ago, and she has been looking for it ever since. The doctor asks if “Kitsune” is where Shinya gets all his things from, since rumor has it Kitsune is the person to go to if you want “bad things.” Shinya denies this, and picks up on the fact that the doctor is thinking Kitsune may have her sword. He claims not to have any idea, and apologizes. The doctor tries to read Shinya’s facial expressions, and notes how his facial muscles don’t move as much as others’. This ties into the motif of how many characters seem to mention Shinya's dead expression/eyes throughout the series. She also says that rumor has it the sword has passed many hands by now, and could have possibly ended up in this town. We then see Akane come from upstairs, having just woken up and is now calling Clarissa (calls her “Risa”) to get her (tomato) juice. This implies that Akane lives at the mental clinic, and knows the doctor/Clarissa well. We then go back to present time, with Shinya looking for the landlord and Satsuki tagging along. The landlord makes her appearance, and her last name is none other than “Megitsune.” Due to her name, one can assume that she may be the “Kitsune” the doctor was talking about.

Chapter 13

Chapter 13 starts off with a new flashback, one that takes place about a year ago (when the Phantom Killer’s victims have just started to appear). Akane is telling Shinya about a time where –  the doctor’s name is now revealed –  Hasumi Saiko once got drunk and slips to Akane that she was actually the “modern-day tsujigiri” (think vigilante killer) in her youth fifteen years ago. Akane and Shinya go to a PC café and look up an article (technically it’s a Wiki page but it’s written more like a sensationalist paper) to confirm. They still have their doubts, though. In his narration, Shinya explains that he and Akane started talking about Saiko’s past due to the recent killings, but doesn’t want to go too much into the details. The way he talks here reminds me of the interrogation scene in chapter 5, as if he’s recounting this event as a story he’s telling. We now go back to the clinic scene, closer to the present but still as a flashback. Akane and Shinya are taking a break outside, and Akane mentions (while drinking her juice) how the sword Saiko was talking about to Shinya is probably the same sword she used in her killing spree, referring to their conversation a year ago. Shinya asks how she knows, and Akane replies that she’s heard Saiko go off on her rambles about the sword before. A lot of this page is implied/left vague on purpose, so I’m not really sure here. Shinya starts to get worried, but we don’t know why yet. Now in present time, we see Shinya conversing with Megitsune Kuroe, and they chat about New Year’s. While Kuroe goes off to get his and Satsuki’s New Year’s gifts, it is revealed that the reason Shinya is so worried is because he’s actually sold Saiko’s sword to Kuroe in the past, and is probably what he plans to talk to her about now. How he obtained the sword to begin with, for what in exchange, and exactly how long ago is not revealed; but what we do learn is that Kuroe is a necromaniac and loves the sight of corpses (at this point, though, it doesn’t seem sexual, just a fascination/obsession). It seems that Shinya back then knew the sword was involved in murders (perhaps not the specifics), which is why he sold it to an eager Kuroe. Furthermore, he mentions how for these types of people, they always have “the one” object that they really love in particular, and implies that for Kuroe, it is the sword. But now, with all these connections (Saiko, Megitsune/Kitsune, him) coming together, he seems pressured to get the sword back to make sure no one else can get their hands on it, and, I’m assuming, make any connections and start a whole bunch of trouble (this page was also pretty confusing). Just as Shinya is about to receive his New Year’s gift, Kuroe asks for something in return. She asks Shinya if he’s ever heard about “the case of the modern-day tsujigiri”, and the chapter ends.

 

Damn, BIG thanks for this =03! I hadn't read this since chapter 11(read the latest 4 today) and the sudden shift in story threw me for a loop as it seemed a bit convoluted. Appreciate the insight in those chapters =03.

I really should've known better. Listening in on his conversations and generally collecting data is Touka's specialty so it'd be pointless to introduce a different character for it. But she seemed different to me.
