It is when the population as one begins to recognize the decrease in numbers that anything should be considered as a whole, I'd believe. One or two missing persons does nothing to society in total, after all.

I doubt that very much. From police shootings, to global warming, and everything in between. It's almost too easy for us to see a tragedy happen and then write it off as a one-shot or an isolated event that doesn't affect us personally.
