Being a foodie in America can be a bit expensive. Only some cities really support foodies with great food at reasonable prices. An awful lot of the country seems okay with quantity over quality and convenience over careful cooking that showcases ingredients. Most regions will have some regional American cuisine that is well prepared and affordable, but you shouldn't expect to find, for example, good salmon in the south or good barbecue in the Pacific northwest.
