^^ Perhaps I'm missing something, but it seems to me that there is something missing in your comment here, Franky . . . . like say what that wonderful "concept" you speak of is. Now, you could be a troll or some sort of creepy spam bot that is unable/unwilling to formulate a complete and logical statement; however, my curiosity is piqued and for whatever reason I want further clarification in regards to your theory and I know that you are at the very least a human (although the jury is still out on whether or not you are a certified troll).

I've got an easy solution to this problem. While I appreciate the scans. You try to justify watermarking by saying with some hullabaloo about "respecting the author's work" or something along those line [...] Watermarking as extreme as you is essentially the same thing as writing graffiti all over that author's work. Now, unless I'm mistaken, graffiti that goes out of it's way to obstruct a work of art isn't really a form of respect. You aren't letting the work be expressed how the author wants it to be expressed. Then again I could be wrong.

^^ CptnRediculous, I feel your pain and sympathize with your woe. I do so miss the days when Love So Life (and other wonderful series) were free of obnoxious watermarks! However, in my happy part of reality I can see how the use of watermarks can be a way to respect the author and artist who have worked so hard on the series. "How so?!" you may ask. Well, here's the skinny from my point of view (this attitude may or may not be shared by anyone . . . although it would be awesome if it was. And it isn't like that is the reason PROZess chose to watermark the LSL as he had . . . but I digress), by watermarking the chapters the scanlator is protecting the author/artist's intellectual property because it prevents the online reader, who obtains their work for free and with little to no effort, from completely enjoying the series. Everything has it's price and it is my hope that watermarking would encourage true fans to support the author and artist by purchasing the chapters and volumes when they are available in their region.

Unfortunately, there are very few people who are willing to pay for something when they can obtain if for nothing; although there are a few awesome people out there that do support the creators of these stories and they deserve major props for doing so (dropping major hints here aka thanks to those of you who are awesome because you do support the authors and artists). Alas, we all know that the majority of fans who read online, only read online, and haven't spent one red cent to support those who deserve it (for clarification, I mean the authors and artists who create the stories . . . don't want to confuse anyone). So, by watermarking the chapters there is a reduction in the awesome factor of the chapter to such a degree that it reminds the online reader that they didn't pay for it, they didn't work on it, and they haven't done squat to support the author or artist, so they have to deal with the consequences and limitations of getting something for free.

Again, these are my thoughts, not yours . . . so do with them as you please.

hmm... why and where did "FunnyBunnyLogic" and "FuBuLy" come from?

Well, several years ago my friends dubbed me "Bunny" for whatever reason, perhaps a particular taste for veggies, a twitchy nose...? idk... anyhoo... After I would offer one of my unique viewpoints my then boyfriend would say, "That's some funny Bunny logic!" Somehow it stuck with me so I kept it for my handle online. As for FuBuLy, it's a shortened version of the original handle; Fu = Funny, Bu = Bunny, L = Logic... Although people ask what the "y" is for, initially it was because "FuBuLo" looked too masculine, but I've decided that the "y" now stands for the question "Why?" that is so commonly asked when I explain the etymology of the acronym.

Since there are no cute bunny type things I will have to great you with the crazy bunny -->>

Welcome to Batoto. Don't worry most members won't bite, and those that do bite have gotten their shots!

I am going to speak my own mind and these opinions do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the other moderators, administration, or the owner of this site.

All the ideas that have been provided to circumvent the comic ripping bot are wonderful in theory, but in practice they are not the most prudent choice because one of the most important things Batoto does is to provide quality scanlations for the fans. Because of the medium that we are using, the internet, there is very little chance that we can completely prevent the ripping of content that is hosted here, so to plot and scheme various methods of attack really does nothing more than reduce the quality and integrity of Batoto. This site was established to bring awareness to the hordes of manga, manhua, and manhwa fans about the community that they are apart of and to provide them a chance to easily contact the groups who work so hard to provide the stories to them.

I understand that security is a very important factor and I want the scanlators to feel that their content is being protected, but content that is on the internet is extremely easy to obtain. Sure there are several methods that we could use to "stick it" to them or make it more difficult to obtain, but at what cost? Should we be willing to upload fake content that confuses and in some cases offends the fans? Should we ask scanlation groups to increase their workload on their projects so that we can attack an unscrupulous organization that leeches off of the community? Does this mean that I want us to do nothing? No, what this means is that Batoto has to be better than them, NOEZ or whoever else is abusing the community, and the best way to do so is to bring their misconduct into the light. If we use unscrupulous tactics, Batoto would be no better than them... if possible it would make Batoto worse because we would be going against the principles that the site stands for.

Batoto is about making a haven for members of our community to enjoy scanlations and provide a link to those who make it possible. There are some that feel Batoto should be the general of the army who leads us to war, but this is a battle that cannot be won through smear tactics. This is a battle that can only be won through a collective focus in our community to provide information to the greater audience. This means that we need to continue to provide information about the corruption and misconduct of those who want to use the community for their own profit. When we take the higher road and continue to provide quality content, and "the enemy" continues to use abusive and shady practices... the audience will notice. This is a game of time and patience, eventually people will see the truth and from there they will take action to right the wrongs that have been committed.

As more time passes and more information is made available, visitors to the sites that leech off the community will decrease... and those visitors may start going to the scanlator sites directly or they may come here. Either way, this is a process that is already in motion. Each day more and more people come to Batoto because they see the corruption out there and do not want to be apart of it. This means that we are gaining ground and each and every day, because (contrary to my popular belief) people are not idiots and they are willing to take a stand against injustice. So, the best offense would be to continue to shed light on the wrongs and to ensure that Batoto does what it is supposed to do. If you've forgotten, it is to continue to support scanlators and provide the best reading experience for the audience.

Superman is a hero or guardian of Earth, not a vigilante because he's been given permission to protect the populace by agencies like NATO and most major nations have also authorized him to assist the local law enforcement and natural disaster corps when the need arises. Therefore, he could not be a vigilante since he is not acting outside of the law. So, although there are persons in positions of authority that consider him to be a nuisance because he gets in the way of their agenda (aka Lex Luthor...), he is generally well respected and usually works within the laws of the region he is taking action in. Unlike Batman, who has his own rules of engagement, typically circumventing the law and authorities whenever possible because poor old Gotham is full of corruption. This is a serious topic in the DC universe because Batman and Superman are typically pitted against one another based on ethics. Superman is the "boy scout do gooder," while Batman is the "volatile black sheep." Superman follows the rules, and Batman makes his own.
But... this isn't a Superman versus Batman topic... so, I'll end this here... for now

I had a dream this morning that was so strange that it propelled me from sleep like a jack-in-the-box. It was neither scary, nor was it disturbed ... just odd. Very, very, very odd.

In my dream I all of a sudden found myself standing in a line. I began to look around, slightly bewildered, since the last thing I could remember was being at home doing laundry. I look to my left and there was another line, all of whom were midgets in NASA jumpsuits who were jumping up and down excitedly. Some were talking amongst themselves about the dozens upon dozens of Chicken McNuggets they were going to eat. Then I looked forward, and who do I see? Ronald McDonald at the cash register taking orders for the lunch rush.

At that point, I was so weirded out that I woke up, and couldn't go back to sleep. I don't like McDonald's, clowns freak me out and I'm still iffy about midgets. And worst yet, I hate commercials. I swear some sort of evil advertising hoodoo is responsible for this. They know that I don't watch TV, since I can avoid commercials by downloading episodes. Now, the bastards are invading my dreams!!!

Three tomatoes are walking down the street- a poppa tomato, a momma tomato, and a little baby tomato. Baby tomato starts lagging behind. Poppa tomato gets angry, goes over to the baby tomato, and smooshes him... and says, "Catch up!"

I want you to post examples of poor or questionable translations from your favorite comics and then explain why you feel the "original" was off and what you would replace it with. I hope this will be something everyone will appreciate and find useful.

I will start by illustrating how a sentence can be correctly constructed with similar words based on the definitions, but does not impart the same meaning or context.

For example:

a.
Girl! Don't go there!

vs.

b.
Female! Prohibited move on!

On the surface they appear to be the same, don't they? The words that were chosen mean virtually the same thing:
girl/female, don't/prohibited, go/move, there/on.

Both examples ARE the same if you only consider the literal definition of the words used. You will notice, that even though the words are the same, the intent and the speaker are different.

In example “a” the intended speaker is a young woman who is conversing with her friend. The friend has just done or said something outrageous. The intention of the statement, is an exclamation of her chagrin with what her friend has done.

In example “b” the intended speaker is a soldier who is speaking to a female who has entered a restricted area. The soldier intents for her to move on because she is not permitted there.

Some would infer if the words mean the same thing and the proper form and placement are used, then the intended meaning should come across... but that is like saying every snow flake is the same.

Now, you're wondering: “How do snow flakes apply to writing and therefore, to translation?”

Bear with me... I'm getting there!

In a scientific sense, every snow flake is the same as any other. They are composed of the same elements and each is created in a similar way. The differences are in the aesthetic. The pattern that is formed when the crystals in the water freeze, causing each to have a distinct pattern, leaving no two alike. Because the aesthetic difference, we are able to appreciate the beauty of each individual flake.

The reason I use the snow flake metaphor is because every person has their own unique way of speaking. The world is populated with almost 400 million English speakers. Of that number, there are numerous dialects used. For example Australian, British, Canadian, Ebonics, United States (Northern, Southern).

Typically, each individual will adapt their native tongue in a way that is comfortable for them. There are several factors that will steer someone in one direction or another. The way you speak is dependent upon your environment (where you live), your education level (or lack there of), your occupation and your social status.

Because there are many ways to speak in English, it makes the translation process difficult. Of course that is why I tend to believe in the "interpretation" method. In essence, one would take the general meaning and context of the passage they are trying to convert into another language and then apply it with common vernacular based on who the speaker is. Of course, at the onset of a "translation" it can be difficult to establish the specific type of personality the character exhibits, but it does get easier as you go on!

So, now that I've spouted about my ideas and such for the past little while, I will provide an example from a manga I picked up not too long ago:

Bokutachi wa Shitteshimatta, Chapter 18, pages 44-45:


ORG. “You've gotta talk. You defended me from her, Ibuki-san...”

The above is awkward, though it does impart the general meaning that was intended: it is a “sarcastic” statement where the speaker is saying: “You are not one who can speak about this or that.” what they should have used was:

EDIT. “You should talk! You stood up to her for me, Ibuki-san...”

Why? Because that is the “common vernacular” for that statement... It is possible that there is someone that would use “ORG”, but it is more likely (in the US) that you will hear someone say “EDIT”.

Another Example:

ORG. “I'm sorry... I wish I had thought of anything better to say, but... if she will pick on you again like she did together with the other girls today, then...”

EDIT. “I'm sorry... I wish I thought of something better to say, but... if she picks on you with the other girls like she did today, then...

WHY. The overall aesthetic of the original sentence is awkward and too wordy. Terms like “anything” and the phrase “did together with” are far from common in (American) English and you can tell with just this sentence that who ever translated the original is not familiar with common usage and form.
