Coma Culture

Two i'd suggest, with smart male leads are probably Horimiya, and Zennou no Noa. One other incredibly popular one has an emotionally clever lead is Onani Master Kurosawa. If you liked Brynhildr in the Darkness, which was suggested earlier, you'd also like Elfen Lied, another work by Okamoto Lynn. The main character of that one is a smart, normal, capable guy though he's entirely oblivious.

I just finished a couple. The last one i 'finished' that i really loved was Kamisama no Iutoori. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but it really got my blood pumping, you know? It was one of those manga where the pages can't seem to load fast enough and you just sit there hammering the right arrow key.

The last one i finished all the way through and liked was Enigma, or Enign3 or however you spell it. It was a decent read, it kept me interested throughout the 50 chapters and the art was amazing...I don't know. It should have been the product of its parts, which were all very good, but somehow it came out as less than the sum of its parts. The story just got more and more unbelievably cheesy and vaguely confusing. It was better than i'm making it sound, but really, the art was the reason i stayed.

Finally, the last one i finished date-wise and hated was Ou-Sama Game. Cool survival game premise becomes everyday-japanese-horror-story turns absolutely butt-f**king stupid at the end.

• Medaka from Medaka Box. I understand she's supposed to be a deconstruction of Mary-Sues but dear lord, i didn't give two shits about her. She was about as endearing and likable as aggressive colon cancer.
• Hideo Suzuki from I Am A Hero. How do you ask the love of your life if she might be betraying your trust? You just spent three chapters wangsting over this,, better make it smooth and heartfelt. "Are you getting dickings from Nakata?!! Because i dont want his sloppy seconds...." Really. Seriously.
• Satoshi from Corpse Party. All the other characters are interesting and cool and can handle themselves in scary situations, yet all the girls want him so badly they are willing to kill thier best friends and fight ghosts and other totally ridiculous stuff. Why? Because its cute when he acts like a coward. That is the only thing

That all said i usually like the main characters in a story, a lot. Although i am one of those people that doesn't mind the 'Whiny Emo main character' archetype. I thought Amano Yukiteru from Mirai Nikki was a just fine character, why does everybody seem to dislike him so much??
