Do you compare apples with pears? No.

I don't see the point comparing Noblesse with Tower of God.

Uhhhhh yea... If there is an apple and a pear in front of me (why you didnt use an orange I dont quite understand) I sure as hell know which one I like more.  I've always hated the way people use that expression.

ToG has TONS of growth potential, Noblesse is a story with an OP main char and has very limited growth potential without some ridiculous plot twist.  ToG is better.  But that is an opinion, and isnt the point of forums for people to exchange facts and opinions with others??  So why do people keep saying that it is pointless to compare the two stories?

I recently started reading ToG and so far it's a major bore. It throw a lot of things at you without providing much of a context. The art lacks style and the fight scenes are boring. It's also very heavy on exposition.

I only read a third of the first season, so maybe it gets better later on. But by that mark, the setting and the main motivation of the protagonist should be established. What's the tower for, and where did these kids (lifted right out modern day settings) come from?

Which one is better?

Tower of God.

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of both but considering that Noblesse is pretty much the same thing it's been since the beginning (enter elder, elder fights, elder loses, Rai gets weaker) it gets a little boring. I love the fighting and the characters but the overall story is simple and it has nothing to separate itself from other shonen manwha. So if I had to grade them, Tower of God gets an A+ while Noblesse gets an A.

The setting and motivation for main protagonist was established very early.  The setting is the tower, and his motivation (from the point it sounds like you are at) is to follow Rachel.

The tower itself is part of SIU's universe, the kids are from the tower.

I meant it lacks context and a proper origin story. Or at least early on. I have no idea who "Baam" is, what country he's from, why he's chasing the girl, etc. I expect more details to emerge (in piecemeal fashion), but I'm nearing chapter 40, and I don't know why all of these people are in the tower doing the things that they're doing. Why are they there? Everything is sort of cryptic and random.

TOG kinda reminds me for "Frozen". It introduces a lot characters, powers and concepts on the fly and expect readers to go along with it. Maybe it gets better, but so far it's not as fun as Noblesse.

He's a vampire like figure who was awakened after a 800 year slumber and has arrived in Korea to find his servant, who's a principal of a high school. A mysterious organization sends modified human beings to search him. Shinwoo and his friend are introduced. I got most of that fairly early.

I got the gist of Noblesse pretty quick. It moves a lot faster than TOG. But maybe I'm being hasty, TOG is a huge hit in Korea.

They're really completely different. ToG is more about its rich story and the lore of the Tower while Noblesse focuses more on art and fast paced action. If I had to choose, I'd go with ToG but I would be loathe to give up Noblesse.

if you get the feeling you "miss" something while reading ToG, then you are not reading "afterwords"

ToG's author SIU explains universe and characters in extra posts. They are usually at the end of each chapter, try reading them. When new strong characters show up, he was usually mentioned earlier in some post.

If you didn't see any "SIU's afterword" at the end of chapters, then it's fault of translator group, that uploaded translated chapter on Batoto (some groups upload translated afterwords, some unfortunately don't). In that case I recommend you to visit http://towerofgod.wikia.com (there is everything, that has been already mentioned by ToG author)

anyway, if you count every additional information about ToG universe(that are not part of story), then ToG is more amazing than Noblesse. But without that info, Noblesse is definitely easier to read.

Honestly it took me a lot more than a third of the 1st season to really get into ToG. The beginning isn't that good, I also felt that I didn't know enough about the characters to care about them. Did you end up reading more? It gets REALLY good, it's now one of my favourites.

Noblesse is the fun action flick you go see on a sunday afternoon. It's fun, highly satisfying with some badass moments, easy to follow. We all need that sometimes.

But ToG is the movie that get an Oscar.

Pretty much what I think.

Noblesse, even if you like it, it's an action series with badassing characters and a good story (the last I'm not sure, because I drop in chapter 50, but if it's that famous, I suppose it).

Whereas ToG has one of the best stories I've read (not until 2d season, though), with characters you can relate to (and those you will hate to unknown limits) and... is good. For those who are a little bored by ToG, I would reccomend to read until Hide and Seek arc. If you don't like that arc, you won't like ToG.

I think Ability could be more comparable to ToG then Noblesse.. since Noblesse has left the kids storyline the only people growing in strength are the modified humans - Noblesse and ToG are just too different to compare.

For what it's worth, I prefer ToG to Noblesse (though I prefer Ability to ToG)

When comparing things with fervent fanbases, you will always have people in either camp. And as such, all comparisons will be subjective. So, lets do what all people do when "comparing" two different series, using comparison points. Well since both are essentially "shounen", lets go with that genre. The main points of analysis should be: Story, Writing, Art, Characters, World, Action. (And maybe comedy if you are pushing for it)

Criteria of Evaluation

Spoiler

Here's my lazily rough essay:

Story:

Spoiler

Tied.

Action

Spoiler

Noblesse wins. It simply has better action scenes.

Art

Spoiler

Tied.

World

Spoiler

ToG wins. It has a more interesting and complex world, that is gradually being expanded. Noblesse just has nobles, humans, werewolves, and w/e mix of the three.

Writing

Spoiler

ToG wins. I put more weight in plot and characters. After all, the plot and characters are a driving force for a series. Bad action and comedy, you can forgive, but not bad plot and characters.

Characters

Spoiler

I have to say, though I love ToG characters more, its a tie. Both series have similar main characters that you can't really say which one is better. They all have mysterious pasts. The main difference between Rai and Baam is that Baam is willing to show his emotions, while Rai doesn't. They bot have lonely pasts and great burdens. Baam's only driving force is the future with his friends, which is the same for Rai. It is to the point that they are willing to die to protect them and waste themselves away in that pursuit, despite how it might affect those around them. Koon and F are really similar characters. Both powerful, but don't like to show it unless they are trolling, and smart. Koon and F are willing to fight for their BFF just to be with them, and protect what they hold most dear, their lives and the friends around them. They are just as complex as the other's series counter parts.

Conclusion

ToG is a the "better" series, but only by a little. That Little coming from a more complex world and better battle/scenarios.

This is as subjectively objective as I can make it.

If you are telling me to compare it subjectively, I would say ToG blows Noblesse out of the water in ever subject but drawing actions scenes and comedy, and ToG would win by a landslide.

I personally dislike how much T.O.G requires you to really on outside sources to fully comprehend everything. Sure; you can get the gist, but for complete understanding you need the wiki, the blog posts and the afterwords. All of which I find to be an example of poor storytelling.

Now I feel both Noblesse and ToG are running downhill. Noblesse is just getting running in same plot loops while ToG is mindlessly dragged without any interesting develooment. I liked ToG's season 1 with all its interesting tests but season 2 has bern a mess... no intetesting test and plain dragging of fights. Most of arcs like 20th fllor, Aries' hand & workshop were dragged out too much without any substance & full of battles which no one cared about. Addition of characters such as Beta, Horyang, etc was plain stupid... Sophie's reason for experimenting deserves noble prize for most idiotic reasoning.

Noblesse is same with adfition of dumb villains & plain rehash of earlier seasons.

Kubera for the win

Normally, I'd agree with strixflash on some points, but I think one needs to take the timing into consideration.

  • Noblesse was going through the list of modified humans then elders. During all that time, there was very little plot progression, because the authors made them no more interesting than fillers. However, Noblesse is just now finally advancing on its core plot: what happened to Rai, plus the relationship between nobles, werewolves and humans. For this reason alone, the current arc has a lot more potential than previous arcs. Of course, it remains to be seen how the series uses this potential.

  • Tower of God just came out of its first tournament arc. What we've learned is that SIU isn't that good at tournament arcs. That's about it. From this point onwards, apparently the Princesses and Great Families will start playing a bigger role, plus progression should be less straightforward than in a tournament arc. (by the way, I personally enjoyed much of Season 2. It may have felt awkward because of the new characters, but in truth, it took some time for readers to get attached to Season 1 characters as well, people just don't remember. The main issue I had was with the tournament arc, really).

Basically, Noblesse is finally entering into a major plot-significant arc, while Tower of God just came out of a relative low-point (that hopefully won't be repeated) and will be increasing the stakes as well. So, I'd wait a bit before asserting that both of them went downhill.

I agree with your point, it's not just ridiculous to think an author would need to augment the work with outside information, but also a little bit sad that people would actually buy into that. Any work should stand on it's own merits, that's just a given. I've brought up this point many times (before I just gave up that is) and my normal analogy would be along the lines of "does somebody have to stand behind you at the theater and explain the movie to you?" Yeah, as I said, I gave up doing much discussion of TOG quite a while ago.

Though honestly, I'd have to differ with you slightly. I personally don't consider that a basis to determine "bad storytelling"............as I said, I've hardly ever taken any of that "outside" stuff into account in the first place..........so yeah, I think the "bad storytelling" label has been earned fair and square by what's actually "between the covers".

A shame, I'd say my opinion on this thread has probably changed........TOG squandered the momentum and promise it had coming into it's second season as far as I'm concerned, making Noblesse, no matter what flaws it might have, the "better" work.

@Potato Farm: Bla Blah Blah!! (Learn how to post sarcasm first....you just made a fool out of yourself!)

Man, I seriously give up on this topic now. Noblesse doesn't keep constiency on quality? Yaa, like hell ToG do the same.
For last one year I am waiting for some good developments and all I see are boring moments in ToG.

Season one of ToG was really good and I accept that but season two is just too worst. Of course, no one here would accept that. The good part just started in ToG and before it was all annoying moments......

You big jerk.... You can't even notice art in Noblesse? Check your eyes...... It has one of the best artwork I have ever seen. And the character design is definately far good than ToG.

Side characters anmoying? Well, you are the first then. All I have seen are fans of M-21 and rest of RK. Your senses are becoming dull.
You know I hate maximum of characters in ToG because of their attitudes. LOL! I even hate Baam's cliched personality in the start.

I always knew Batoto community would be unfair to Noblesse when it comes to ToG but seriously I didn't expected this. You all are ready to look at the negative sides of Noblesse but not at ToG? Oh,right.....ToG is mindblowong and-----... Don't give me that!

Is there an optoon by which I can ignore this thread?

God, what a fanboy.
